Its so nice the way they treat student loans in the UK. The US is totally different LOL you can be homeless, and still having to pay back those student loans. Great video love

I wish I did undergrad there omg so unfair. I graduate this December and I'll owe the government $27,000+ and I have 3 months from the time I graduate to pay it. If I don't get a job...oh well..too bad. Lol like you said, I could be a homeless double amputee and they wouldn't care.

So true especially when you start catching feelings for someone thinking things might go a step further getting parents involved but things don't turn out that way 😭. People do seem to change also as they get older. To be honest just be close to family rather than friends unless you make a friend who's very open and sociable

Thank you so much pat! I am currently studying Computer enginnering in South Korea so i can totally relate.I have only one friend in my major and that's because she is a foreigner too, so we have no choice but to stick together. most of my courses are hard and in korean, which leaves me discouraged but you know us african kids, we are fighters and everyone back home is expecting us to succeed! This year i stopped feeling sorry for myself, learned the language and created a school club for foreigner students in my university where we meet and motivate each other as well as share our experiences! it showed me how important it is to have a support group, esp in uni.

I totally agree with Patricia. If I could add that when deciding on your university course, think about combining it with a language. I studied Spanish and Latin American Studies and had friends who were doing Psychology and Spanish for instance. Having a language as part of your degree not only looks good on your CV but it also means you get to spend your 3rd year abroad. I lived in Spain for a year which I always look back at being one of the best years of my life. So many great experiences plus I came back fluent in another language! I had friends who went to Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela and all experienced life affirming moments which was part of their University experience!

+TunefulTV Oh god so true. One thing I really regret is not doing a combined honours! I studied Journalism, graduated last year, and I did GCSE and A Level at school but foolishly stopped there. And now I'm losing my touch with Spanish, which is a shame because it's a beautiful language and there are sooooo many Spanish-speaking countries I want to visit!
@jamsng
@jamsng 9 жыл бұрын
+GrapeSodaFanatic you can still do it...I found it challenging to uni work in another language lol I think doing it after is better but if you can handle it at Uni then go for it. there are Spanish programmes that allow you to go to another country on the programme.

I think its important to make an effort to socialise at university. Seems like that plays a big factor in how much you enjoy it. I know people who only made friends within their flat, which can be isolating! One of the easiest ways to make friends is to join societies. Everyone at uni's in the same boat, so just talk to people/ask questions
@wendyaddo9544
@wendyaddo9544 9 жыл бұрын
+simply.s I agree, that's kind of what I did in my first year and ended up suffering the consequences in second year (especially as an ex was involved!) Fortunately I started to branch out eventually and joined and even helped start a society, but advice I'd definitely tell my younger self would be to make an effort to make friends in all corners of university, and don't have the mentality that the first friends you've made in Freshers Week will be your only friends! x

@nataliestephens295

+Carefree Maya I do the same thing and the fact that I think this way really pisses me off. I make excuses mainly because I am afraid of failure. So I don't do new things or jump on new opportunities as much as I know I should. But recently I was so fed up with thinking like this that I just woke up one day and told myself to suck it the fuck up and do it! I have to get mad at myself to push myself to do the things I've made excuses not to do sometimes. It works, but I have to find a different way because I can't be angry at myself all the time lol Anyway just wanted to share.

What Patricia said about other professions being 'boring' and 'generic' was her reaction to her family's pressure to follow a stereotypical career path. It's tough because it can stifle your dreams, and your life purpose. She is proof of that. So, please don't take her comments personally. Especially as you are not what you do, or what you earn.

OMG it sounds like you are sharing my story! I recently graduated in accounting from university but at the end of the day, I chose accounting because i was very good in numbers and to please my african parents. It is very boring to me, I didn't know what i wanted to do except that i love fashion. I even been a model but i dropped. It wasn't for me. Now i've been watching youtube for years and now I decided to start my own youtube channel. And I must say that I absolutely LOVE it! Being in front of the camera is something I enjoy doing and you inspire me so much. I don't know how things are going to be in the future, whether or not one day I will achieve your success but at least i'm trying. **That was the longest comment I wrote on YT hahah I could write a book** Sorry for my fumbling english, I'm a french speaker. This video is so inspiring Pat,I am a 30 year old female and after spending 8 years in a career that although I was good at I absolutely hated it. I am now in the process of a career change and the line i am interested in means I would have to go to uni.I battled within myself for years to make this decision but ultimately discovered that it is the right thing to do ,its the future that matters not the now. i did not want to look back with regret in a few years down the line wishing I had made the move but like they say "better late than never." Even though I've had to take a huge pay cut just to get my feet into this new line of work I already feel happier than I've ever was in my last job,I'm starting school this September and I am so excited!the thought of hiw bright the future is spurs me on,the job satisfaction and fulfilment drives me and encourages me to go forward. Ladies in the uk to become a management or chartered accountant you don't even need to go to uni. You need to pass a series of exams and have 3 years experience in accounts. You can do this by getting a great school leavers program but you still need good A level marks. The exams are definitely challenging cima and acca but you don't need a degree to be chartered

Im so stuck now I'm currently doing philosophy, english lit and lang and law. However, I'm not all too keen on law and theres nothing else i can take! I'm hoping so badly that im able to take biology but it clashes with the maths resit ugh :( but everything happens for a reason!

I know school makes a big deal out of GCSE maths but on a reals, a few of my friends got into uni without it. Royal Holloway... Of course it all depends on your course so I don't know but 40% of my management buddies got in without maths. Don't stress too much just try your hardest and ask repeatedly if you can change your course and if there's any more options suitable for the career path you'd like to take.

I'm so happy I seen this video. I really needed this.. when you said "seek help when you need it" that spoke exactly to me & the topic of working on yourself to bridge out of your degree. It really opened my eyes & I'm so happy I watched this b4 my classes begin. Thanks

As a Black guy, i can say that University/college is worth it as long as you pick meaningful degrees. I have 2 BSc degrees and now doing my Masters degree. These degrees have allowed me to have a good career in healthcare and earn six figures. So it is worth it, but you have to be selective.

The Apache Dartship University took about 7 years to finish, started working and earning some money, and now went back to do my Masters in Education part-time while I work. This will take about 3 years to finish. The goal is to become a professor in my field which will allow me to earn even more.

I take it your in America. Wish healthcare job salaries were the same in UK as America 😭. I'm coming not far to the end of my masters course in the UK. I've never searched for a job and never got paid before so I feel that adds to that worry. I'm currently doing 2 work placements whilst doing my course though that's at a halt due to CoronaVirus. I just want to get into a good job with a clear career ladder so I can work my way up and hopefully be earning a high salary at the end.

I 100% agree about a support group. I found the first two years of uni difficult when you have no one to sit with in lectures and no one to study with. I pray that like you I will find my group in third year and hopefully find my Mike! :)

I felt your heart in your account and just wanted to hug you Patricia! You're correct about skill set outside of your course being important, I read law, but not at all working in that field. Also, it's so true about friendships and seasons. I must say, the UK makes cost less of an issue than it is elsewhere for those wanting to attend university. University for me was an experience, I was full time law, newlywed and first time mum. Thank you for sharing😃👍

Thank you so much for this video, I'm 25 and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and its 2015, I have no clue in what I want to do with my life!!!! I cried, I prayed and cried and prayed, and I'm slowly figuring things out. I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one that felt this way!

I'd just like to say to anyone who's nervous about starting university/worried about being homesick etc. The truth is everyone is homesick, and at first that is going to suck but stick it out for a few weeks and you won't regret it! Uni can genuinely be the best time of your life. Two years ago I was crying at the thought of going - now I'm literally counting the days til I go back! Embrace the freedom, embrace the opportunities thrown at you and don't be afraid to admit when you miss home or are finding things hard because I guarantee everyone else is too (even if they pretend otherwise) :) And of course, good luck! Xx

You've definitely made me feel more motivated when I begin my own university course. Thank you! xxx

And THANK YOU for underlining the importance of education, work, school. I feel like, for a time, youtubers shared an idea of an 'easy life' only about results and success.Education appeared almost 'unecessary'. Last year, I did my final research on Higher education and how it could become an asset for a country. It was really interesting to search all the information. HE is not mandatory, yet it's an opportunity that can improve someone's skills and future.
