My parish priest was traveling and had a flight delay. At one point someone walks up to him at the airport and asked him if he would hear the person’s confession. Father Bob said yes, & heard the person’s confession. As he looked up, a line was forming for confession at the airport. He heard confession for two hours until his flight.

I'm a convert from Anglican. My first confession, the Friday before my Confirmation was not at all what I expected. I'd worked hard to condense a lifetime of sin into a reasonably cohesive & comprehensive whole. I was terrified. We sat in Father's office, face to face. He asked some questions -- mostly to clarify things & be sure that I was truly penitent. I left there feeling as if an immense weight had been lifted from me. I still do, every time I go to confession (about once a month). It's a daunting prospect, until you've done it for the first time.

The Holy Sacrament of Reconciliation is truly a wonderful gift from JESUS! It’s not something to be nervous about, going into the confessional. On the contrary, it’s something to look forward to. GOD’s mercy & grace is sooo powerful! After you truly confess all your mortal sins, and after you get absolution, its now in a sanctified state of grace, and after exiting the confessional door your soul is LITERALLY ready for entering the Gates of Heaven!!! Now approaching 80, I became a Catholic at the age of 25, having been baptized as a Protestant but only ever 'practiced' that religion compulsorily at school. Having then learned at school about Henry VIII, I came to believe that, at the end of the day, Protestantism was only a man-made religion established to suit Henry's own purposes. I don't condemn Protestants today as , at the end of that same day, we worship the same God but in different ways. I don't imagine that Henry VIII enters in too many minds now. So I started to think about Catholicism. Eventually, the priest who conducted my first Communion gave me a conditional baptism in case there was anything wrong with the first one. Through this, I felt I was being re-born. My first confession had been a bit clumsy, due to trawling through 25 years and not fully appreciating what was a grave sin in the first place (I'm not necessarily the brightest!). However, to get to the topic at hand at last, now that I have more understanding and experience, I don't relish confession because before I even go into the confession box I have face up to my own short-comings which is shameful. It's not due to owning up to God via the priest but to owning up to myself which can be difficult but I have come to understand that owning up to myself is important. Unlike the popular belief among non-Catholics that confession excuses all that I have done there is still the feeling of regret for what I have done and I feel that conscience, thus, is the key to not doing it again. Nonetheless, being absolved of sin provides yet another (may be undeserved) re-birth and I feel really good after confession. My advice to anybody recently converted is to just go for it. Confession is an unburdening but what happens after is up to you.

When I converted from Baptist to Novus Ordo Catholic, I was totally freaked by confession: not the sacrament itself but sitting alone in a room with a priest for face-to-face confession, such as is typical in the Novus Ordo. I felt so humiliated and vulnerable so often that I went as little as possible! Nor did I take my children, which I hate to say might have been a good thing considering more than one priest was a predator who molested my son, causing serious long-term psychological damage. Frequent Novus Ordo style confession would have provided many more opportunities. When we changed to tradition 30 years later, I was pleasantly surprised to find confessional booths and anonymous confession. It wasn’t long before I was so comfortable with this arrangement that I was first in line every two weeks for regular confession.

It’s appalling to hear the advise of some priests in the confesional, like “ we are humans” , therefore any sexual transgression is ok. Yes guys the Apostles were given the authority by Christ to forgive sins. My question is this, if our priests are true Apostles of Christ why can't they heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons as they were also given the authority to do this. Dare we ask the question, do they really have the authority to forgive sins when they can't fulfil all the authorities they were given. This should lead us to questions. Is it because of their lack of faith. Is it because they are not following in Christ's footsteps. Have they lost this authority because they have lost the true understanding of Christ's teachings, values and humility. For instance, Christ criticised the Pharisees for how they dressed, for putting themselves above everyone else, (exalting themselves) for pushing traditions as an extra burden on peoples shoulders as if it were law. Or is it all of the above and then some. Should we only confess to Christ in private? If we can't answer the hard questions and march on as if everything is rosy in the garden are we really doing Christ justice, are we really giving Christ the reverence He deserves.
@Bateluer4 ай бұрын
Its probably because the concept of Confession was made up by the Roman church in the middle ages and the priest cannot actually absolve any of your sins. Only Christ can do that. When the Roman church invented the 'Confessional', it was intended to make medieval populations recognize their sins and change behavior. Unfortunately, it simply brought their sins to the forefront of their minds and encouraged them to sin more.
