Its quite clear, with NZ at the helm of it, there's been a drive to push Bok style of rugby out of rugby, for decades. Amazing how folks forget our dominance in SR when it was first started, before all the constant juggling of rules changes on the regular ever since by New Zea... I mean Sanzaar... I mean IRB. The single largest weight behind rugby rule changes for going on two decades now has been NZ, to keep themselves and their style at the top and relevant. Finally changing, well at least at NH/international lvl. Things seem unfazed at Sanzaar lvl with clear discrepencies in officiating ideologies within the so called 'grey areas' of the rules. One day Rugby will be clever enough to realise that: if the Shoulder Charge is a dangerous action then the attacking player should also be penalised for using it. Like the Stockdale tackle (against Samoa, RWC, Japan) when Jacob lowered his trunk and effectively chose the point of contact: the Samoan player stayed low, in a crouch, arms spread but the red card was given to the defender. The look on the Samoan players afterwards,... they were devastated. Consistency leads to clarity which is essential if the game is to be continued to be played in heaven. (b) Faf was not bound. A bind is clearly defined in the laws. So was he really onside? Hint: 'last feet'.

Nigel, A couple of questions. I thought a player cannot play the 9 when they are in in the ruck. I also thought the offside lines at a ruck was the hindmost foot of each team so once the ball is out only players behind the offside line can advance to tackle the 9. If we allow a player in a ruck to reach out and grab the arm of the scrum half when it is about to be played then there will be a lot of tall second rows reaching over the top of a ruck to do just that and therefore slowing the game down even more.
@hetfool3 жыл бұрын

As much as I love Nigel, he got this completely wrong. Advantage is being played for Eben not rolling away, Faf then digs in to try and grab the ball and take away the advantage from Australia (which itself is cynical), his right foot is over the offside line the entire time (he even takes another step forward with it) and then he reaches around the ruck to strike Nic's arm. Quoting the law: 'A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to, biting, *punching*, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm (including stiff-arm tackles), shoulder, head or knee(s), stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking.' Aus had advantage because SA didn't roll and trapped the ball in the ruck. SA stopped a fair contest for the ball and ref told faf a few times to stop and to get his hands off the ball as the ruck was lost. People are removing the action from the context of the game and claiming it was legal. The yellow was not for a knock on, it was for deliberately killing the ball on advantage after he was told to stop. Its a bit click baity that people are saying it was for a knock on.

@@bromponie7330 sure there is. SA did not roll away. They infringed at the ruck, the infringing player still did not roll away, the ball way still in the ruck. How can faf legally compete for the ball when a SA player is layng in the ruck? He was told to leave it because it wasn't a fair contest due to SA infringement. He did not listen and killed the ball so australia couldn't play their advantage. That's cynical.
@bromponie73303 жыл бұрын
@@fatalflyingguillotine The act of killing the ball is A-OK. It's equivalent to forcing a turnover when the opposite team has an advantage. Yes, they should go back for whatever penalty caused said "advantage", but deliberately making a (legal) play to "kill the ball" doesn't warrant giving them a yellow for it.
@fatalflyingguillotine3 жыл бұрын
@@bromponie7330 idk what you are talking about, I've been pinged for killing the ball before. It's actually not ok and can be yellow card offece. Let me put it this way: not rolling away illegally slows or completely prevents a team from competing for the ball at the breakdown, when faf is told to take his hands off the ball, it's not because he is offside (he is clearly on his side of the ruck), it's because SA have stopped a fair contest test for the ball. When the ref tells him to take his hands off the ball it's because he can't legally take the ball because they have already illegally stop australia from competing for it. The ball isn't out of the ruck, the infringing SA player still has not rolled away, what changes? Nothing. So why would faf think that when the ref tells him to let the ball come to Australia that now it's a fair contest and he can go back to competing for the ball? Is it now a fair contest for the ball? No. SA still haven't rolled and they have slowed the ball down illegal by a few seconds already. He was told to stop and let the ball come to australia, he did not, that's cynical.

I disagree with your call on the Faf card, though you are spot on with the law there. Thing is that he was slowing the ball down in that ruck and did not let go until the referee called him on it several times. There was an advantage because of that. He then knocked the ball out of the hand of the half back, and for me it is borderline whether he goes for the ball of the hand. Had he clearly struck at the underarm or grabbed the wrist, he would have gotten away with it. But the combination of it being a penalty he had just given away and then denying the advantage to be played with a possible foul play is what deserved the card.

I'm still trying to find where in the law you're allowed to slap/punch players anywhere, yet alone on the arm? AFAIK that's always been cynical play and goes against the spirit of the game - and in the 'Misconduct' section of the 'Foul Play' law it states 'A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship.' It seems to me like Faf is convinced that this is a legitimate tactic due to it not being expressly forbidden in the law (as Nigel pointed out), but everyone knows it's completely contrary to the spirit of the game.

The same reason Frans Malherbes fractionally late tackle on Matt Phillip in the opening minute of the game didn't get penalised/ carded....because rugby is chaotic and the rules are more like guidelines. Marikas effort was fair, body height was low, the arm doesn't really wrap but it is placed on the player tghe entirety of the contact, the angle and speed of the impact, the contributing leap into the tackle, the leading with the elbow (illegal) from mapimpi actually dislodges koroibetes arm initially. So much to consider. I watched the Australian broadcast of the game and they did actually check it and deem there was a wrap immediately after it happened.

Regarding a player's taking too long for a penalty kick, if the referee allows it to be taken, it has to count. If the player takes too long, the referee should step in and prevent it. If the referee decided it had taken too long but then let it proceed, it would be a terrible gyp to then disallow the goal! The referee's allowing play to proceed says that it has *not* taken too long; the advantage law does not apply there.

Nigel is one of the best referees that ever graced the game.

Officials have messed up rugby for decades, due to incompetence and under handed circumstances. Remember Bryce Lawrence?

I'm done with this Rugby Championship. EVERY GAME has a corrupt referee. The World Cup is in danger, I can bet you money there will be corrupt referees to spoil it and NO one is holding them responsible.

In only 1 game of the last 10 that the springboks have played, they have conceded more penalties than their opposition. Based on that, there is a 90% chance in any game that the referee will penalise their opposition more than he penalises the boks.

South Africa is from the African continent, so they will always be on the wrong side of an overseas referee.
