In today's video I am answering a frequent question about whether I think it was worth it to study Fashion Communication: Fashion Journalism at CSM (Central Saint Martins) at UAL (University of Arts London).

I just finished my first year on the same course and I feel a similar way! There's so much I want to create and work on during the year, but it's not only the time constraints of university but the financial aspect too. I've found that I have to work in hospitality at least 3 days a week alongside the degree to pay for living expenses, and it feels like a constant balancing act. It's really frustrating especially when most people that are in my class are internationals or come from wealthy backgrounds and are funded by their parents, so they can work on projects outside of university whilst still doing the assignments!

Heyyy, I know students who works full time while still attending college and have a lot of time in their hands. They get like 13.50 per hour in Ireland just to reply to 30 emails per day as a admin/administrator without any degree. I will start to look into it since I also need to save money whilst bring a student without having to go to the job and work anywhere I want

Honestly, with the way you have already built your fashion journalism protofio (youtube, insta and your magazine, plus the book library you are building)… the educational aspect you are fulfilling now is just an add on and as you said your writing will get better and better. I’m glad you are studying because learning never stops. But really, you have such an amazing portfolio and raw work ethic, imagine how much you will learn and where you’ll be in the next 5 years even… Fashionroadman worldwide soon come 🔥 I feel it 🔥🔥🔥

I went to CSM, in my opinion it wasn’t worth it for me. I graduated about 15 years ago now so maybe it’s different now but I found the teaching pretty lacking, I think I actually learned more at collage rather than university. Because a lot of the lecturers are struggling designers themselves they tend to be very guarded about techniques and passing on that knowledge. It was more of a “if you want to know then go and figure it out yourself” kind of place which is fine but I’m paying you to teach me things so please do.

From my point of view the decision of not taking jobs you are not gonna enjoy and focus 100% on the university is the right choice. In my case I'm in my second year of the Graphic Design degree and my objective is improving as much as I can, trying to build a strong portfolio to work with the businesses I want to in a future instead of making easy money doing clientworks that are not gonna fulfill me and delay my learning. Btw, it sounds really interesting that every person there is focused on fashion. My university is the biggest one of design in Spain, so you can meet people who is studying fashion, product, animation, videogames, etc. and it's really useful to open your mind to new creative paths, but sometimes I'd love having the possibility of talking to more people who is interested in the same paths of design I'm aiming for. Good luck with your degree bro, I'm glad you made the decision of fighting for your dreams!

I’ve always loved the dedication you put into your videos and career!!! One day it will pay off it always does! I’ve worked hard for the past months studying fashion, learning design, and learning how to translate my ideas into paper and after all the hard work I got accepted to Fashion School which I’m very proud off! So I think all of us have to truly work hard and sacrifice things but everything will pay off in the future 🖤🖤

Thanks for the insightful video. Your journey till you made it to CSM is very relatable to me, as I myself studied different degrees, did an engineering job, side by side pursuing a modeling career. And now I finally am ready to be in the creative field full time. Getting into CSM has always been a dream. My question to you is which masters course in CSM do you think could add value in being a creative director in the Fashion Industry. It would be great help if you could answer this as I am shortlisting the courses in CSM. Thanks in advance.

I appreciate so much that you touched on racism in the academy. Glad to hear you haven't encountered any microaggressions or overt BS firsthand, but I'm also curious if your professors and the curriculum itself are more Eurocentric and male-centric than maybe you'd hoped? I know a lot of people (myself included, for photography) have ruled out certain schools for just that reason.

I’m graduating this year and I can say that if I knew what I know now I wouldn’t have gone to csm. I was a first year when COVID hit and every single year has been stripped of any opportunities. We never had the opportunity to do an industry project, or work with any outside people during the course. I am also black and what I experienced, as a student trying to explore black themes in my work, was a really deafening silence. As if they where really unfamiliar with any aspect of black culture. I had to take a break from tutorials because I was always met with “we don’t really understand” I had to give history lessons ext… The newest assistant first year tutor happens to be black and when I talked about my work with her it was the dialogue I had imagined would be at csm. I was one of three black students on my course. I am American so I pay a tremendous student fee of over 20000£ a year without living cost, I would kill to only pay 9k a year. We received no making up for COVID, I feel cheated and I would not recommend this school for anything.

This is why I said others might have a different experience. On fashion journalism we've worked on multiple projects including one with Harper's Bazaar, Farfetch and a Vogue Editor. I also got an opportunity to do the Versace press run with Thames & Hudson & Tim Blanks - thamesandhudson.com/news/podcast-versace-catwalk-with-tim-blanks/ Also, a lot of my projects have been around my blackness and my lecturers have been super supportive. I've done a zine project on Thebe Magugu and more recently I did a project on Nigerian fashion. The response was great in my case. I don't know what course you did but for journalism covid didn't affect us as much as it would say a design student because we don't need access to studios the way design students do. All we needed was access to the library which we were given priority for. I guess another thing to mention is of course my case is much better considering i'm paying half of what an international student would pay but it's still been hard for me because it's actually me that is paying for it.

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in that, many people feel like you do but CSM's 'spin machine' makes it very difficult to cut through the crap and make people come out with the truth of how they really feel. CSM and/or UAL are very powerful and people tend to self-censor themselves or to get buried under the "Fashion Roadmans" of this world that are trying to make it at any cost by throwing everyone else under the bus. Bear in mind that this is just a youtube channel, and anything that appears on social media should be taken with a pinch of salt. Who knows what the actual truth is.... Who knows what/who is really behind anything.... Talking about fashion though, there are other places in Europe that have a very strong design tradition: Italy, France, the Netherlands where you can study for a fraction of what anyone would spend at CSM. Just a question: Did Virgil Abloh study at CSM?? No, he went straight to the capitals of fashion and the luxury market - Paris & Milan
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman Жыл бұрын
This comment was all over the place and confusing at the same time. How did I throw everyone under the bus? I was talking about my personal experience, it doesn’t negate anyone else’s experience. I just personally haven’t had a bad experience, me saying that doesn’t mean everyone else won’t have an issue so I really don’t understand what you’re saying. If I did have a negative experience I would’ve mentioned it, UAL would not have been able to do anything about it. Also your point about Virgil Abloh wasn’t the best example considering he worked for Kanye West and had a huge contact list of A-List celebrities when he started off-white. He had a manufacturing deal with New Guards group from day 1 and they launched off-white together. Read up on Davide De Giglio’s involvement in starting off-white.

@@FashionRoadman Just to clarify. I do not think you threw anyone under the bus lol. I am so happy you had the experience that you did! You clearly have a direction and the talent that makes you deserving of such and experience. I just wanted to share my thoughts. I was on the BA jewellery course at CSM btw, it just sometimes felt like the course had no direction. Thank you for the Virgil history that seams really interesting! I think you made a video about Virgil but I don’t t think I have had the opportunity to watch it yet, will do soon. I would also just like to say that it is great to have the kind of representation that you bring to fashion journalism. I will defiantly be following your carrier. I think racism is rare in fashion schools. There are so many people from different backgrounds and people finding themselves, so there there is no main group of the same type of person, if that makes any sense, to form a majority to treat others poorly that are not like them.
