That's pretty much the consensus I hear generally. People love the Chief/Cortana dynamic, but anything related to the Didact/Forerunners was just flat out awful. The Didact apparently had all this build up from the books but in practice all he did was act like a darth vader knock off, spouts some empty platitudes about why "humans bad", then is defeated in a QTE event. I was going to say the same thing, this is such an absolutely powerful scene that shows so much about Chief. It also can show him as falling back into what was one of the complaints about the Spartan II's which was their machine like personalities. Cortana helped humanize him, and with her loss he started to regress back to what he was. Its probably one of the, if not THE best scene in all of Halo, and probably one of the more important scenes in video games in relation to the human and soldier aspect.

Am I weird to say that I think Master chief was always a character but his silence was warranted given the context of situations. I always felt like we split the duty of main character with him cause he makes small remarks and even jokes when we are not in control, but as soon as it is go time, it is us. So even if he is silent for a majority of time in halo 1, and a bit in 2, we still had a shared role to play. Even ODST managed to convey this split role with us playing as the vocal team as Romeo, Dutch, Mickey, and o Gunny Buck himself. Then when it was go time, we were back to Rookie, but even he had a moment of wanting to speak but ultimately never did.

I feel my opinion is a super minorty, but i actually didnt mind Sarah Palmer's attitude. Her purpose is the same as Del Rio's. The whole point was to show that the world had moved on from relying on the Chief and that Spartans are now mass produced. His generation has become obsolete, and it puts you as the player in the scenario of showing the "younger generation" how its done. You can only have that dynamic if there's a bit of antagonism between the chief and the new Spartans. By the end the game, its clear that Palmer and the rest of the S4's IDOLIZE the chief as a legend. He just had to earn it for them.

9:10 The Mantis is one of the few good things 343 added to the series that feels very "Halo". Halo is a series that I really don't think needs mechs, and there was a really good chance that they could have added something really dumb... like something that really didn't fit, like a Gundam styled mech. But instead, surprisingly, 343 added a mech that looks pretty grounded and adheres to quite a bit of old art style quirks Halo had, such as: UNSC equipment having a near future, industrial-military design; focus on 45 degree angles; and generally being something that you could see normal people in the future actually adopting for practical purposes. One of the things I like about the Mantis is that is looks like at one point this thing could have been a loader of some kind (not unlike the one from Aliens, which is a massive inspiration to classic Halo). Hell, swap out the arms, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the UNSC uses these things as cargo loaders when not used for combat. It's a fairly unique design and one that doesn't go over the top. It doesn't try and add robot arms or look like a walking Pelican like the HW Cyclops (a design that fits HW's out there but inspired art style, but doesn't fit in mainline Halo). Mantis is cool.

Halo 4 was ruined by trying to appeal to a broader audience, and graphical/writing teams being obsessed with making Halo 'their Halo' by changing things for the sake of doing so. Which is only ruined by silly justifications, like Chief having nanomachines in his Mjolnir to modify it to be identical to Gen2 Mjolnir that Cortana doesn't know exist yet. But even though Halo 4 has so many issues, I think it's a good game, which is more so praise to the Halo IP being so good that 343 couldn't screw it up instantly. the base story isnt all that bad. cortana survived by connecting herself to the domain (the thing the forerunners used to control their AI), this cured her rampancy, but didnt undo the damage she sustained in halo 4. she then used the mantle to take control over all the forerunner tech left in the galaxy, and proclaimed herself and all AI to be the ones who deserved the mantle of responsibility over the galaxy. master chief discovers that she is still alive and tries to find her, in order to reunite wither her and reason with her. this ultimately fails, and she orders the entire galaxy to cease all interstellar travel, at the threat of death. those few that managed to escape her, then try to hatch a plan on how to stop her. halo 6 picks up right after this plan is tried. they get a cortana replica down onto a ring so that it can access forerunner technology pretending to be her (putting the UNSC on equal footing over control of the forerunner tech). they would then firewall her on the ring and box her into an AI chip. after retrieving this chip and the replica cortana, they would eliminate both. atriox showed up just in time to ruin these plans though. he had no clue what was happening, until he went down to the ring and discovered the fact that cortana was stuck in it's systems. cortana knew no matter what happened, she would die. either atriox kills her, or the humans win back the ring and kill her. so she decided to kill herself early and take atriox out with her, while eliminating the ability to use the ring. this was done to save master chief, if he was still alive (he was), as well as the rest of humanity. this doesnt sound all that bad. its a good story with a good sequel revolving around ending cortana and fighting off the banished. where this fails is in HOW they fleshed out these details. they did it so bad in 5 that they just couldnt justify cortana even being alive in 6. they cut a good quarter to third off that story, and put it in a cutscene, JUST to keep their failures from 5 as minimalized as posible.

BR Slayer just ruins the fun of the Halo sandbox since there’s no incentive to go for any other weapon. To me, that’s what was missing from Halo 4 since everyone could just spawn with the BR, but on every single game mode this time. Just ruins the sandbox tbh since there’s no point to be using the assault rifle, suppressor or covenant carbine when you can already get the DMR and BR straight from spawn. Halo 4 could’ve easily been one of the best if not the best multiplayer Halo experience we’ve gotten otherwise

@@megaman37456 Nothing wrong with sprint in Halo. Like I said, loadouts are completely different though because they just ruin the sandbox and don’t give you any incentive to be using underpowered weapons that aren’t the DMR or BR since you can just spawn with them. Nevermind BR Slayer in this situation. I’m talking about just base slayer game type. Undoubtedly, Battle Rifle and Boltshot gave you the advantage in any situation and you could spawn with them. And imagine having to put on a perk just to let you pick up grenades of dead players… Also, idk if you’ve only played the MCC version of Halo 4, but in the original, you had to level up to unlock certain weapons and perks. I wonder what other popular game from the time had a similar system

I really think changing the entire look of both factions and introducing new hyper advanced weapons and ships did the world building a disservice. Both humanity and the covenant races would have been devastated by this point in the war. Especially humanity. Having lost billions of lives and countless planets, their society and economy SHOULD be in shambles. But in Halo 4 everything is fine. They’ve built new ships that are better and more dangerous than ever. I wish they would have played off the devastation humanity had gone through. If Del Rio refused to engage the Didact due to major logistical issues and a lack of man power, his decision would actually make sense. Instead he is built into an extremely rigid officer who doesn’t listen to anything but protocol. An unlikely pick for the commanding officer of the UNSC’s largest remaining ship. I wish they’d have shown us that both powers are beginning to run out of steam and are relying on increasing outdated technology all while being stretched too thin to reliably take advantage of these same issues that their opposition is facing. That is until a certain Spartan 2 arrives on the scene. On top of that; all those new weapons they added to the human and covenant forces could have been repurposed to serve as forerunner weaponry. Things like the SAW, sticky detonator, and rail gun could have been given a forerunner coat of paint and made for interesting new firearms for the new faction, rather than what are essentially retextured shotguns, battle rifles and sniper rifles. Also, how does a ship the size of the Infinity survive crashing into a planet? Like I understand that it isn’t just going to explode, but there’s no way it should be able to take off again. In Halo Reach we see that large ships need disposable thrusters to get enough speed to reach escape velocity. And that’s from leaving an ideal takeoff point like dry dock. Infinity crashed into dense jungle. There’s no way it should be able to just take off.
@relevant3773 Жыл бұрын
1. The inner colonies were left mostly unharmed during the Human Covenant War, with the Outer Colonies suffering the most damage, while this set humanity back during the war they were able to recuperate relatively fast especially with advancements in smart AI. 2. The Storm Covenant ARE using outdated technology, most of their armor and ships are produced from pre-Covenant forges on Sanghelios and other Sangheili assemblies, though this is better seen in Halo 5 where both the SoS and Storm Cov are seen using explicitly ancient ships such as the Lursu pattern brigantine. The reason this isn't seen as much on the human side of things is because of the aforementioned inner colonies being spared the brunt of destruction, advances in smart AI, as well as private industry taking over what was previously solely done by the UNSC and associates, namely the production of MJOLNIR now being done by large corporations. 3. Reach doesn't adhere to canon and ships needing auxiliary jet boosters never appears anywhere else in Halo, besides the Infinity is also leaps and bounds more advanced the Pillar of Autumn
@JayS96Bruh Жыл бұрын
@@relevant3773 But weren’t the outer colonies quite specifically settled due to the inner colonies running out of resources? That was one of the leading factors driving the insurgents in the early 26th century. The human war effort in 2552 was running on fumes and it would take decades, if not centuries, of work to rebuild what had been lost. Supporting this is the epilogue of Halo Reach which shows us Reach, arguably the second most important human planet to the UNSC, is still being rebuilt in the year 2589. If they haven’t managed to rebuild their infrastructure on important established planets/space routes in nearly 40 years, the ability for mankind to develop at the rate seen in the 343i games doesn’t add up. Additionally, Reach is very much canon overrides anything from the books. Halo is a video game series first and foremost. The first time we see a human starship take off from a planet is in Reach utilizing rocket thrusters to achieve escape velocity. Additional media, especially media that was not developed/written by Bungie (1999-2010) or 343i (2011-present day), is subject to being rewritten to fit the story/world that the intellectual property owners want to create. Failing to address this issue and simply ignoring it to further the plot is just lazy. It makes the story push the viewer’s suspension of disbelief when consistency isn’t held. It would be like if Superman’s home planet of Krypton was revealed to have never been destroyed in a Netflix series and future comics and movies just ran with it without the comics ever addressing how it managed to survive.

As you alluded to once or twice, it's just too Call of Duty like in many ways. Structurally, the entire campaign feels segmented into small parts where you drive a tank, go on foot, pilot a ghost etc, rather than any real choice in how you approach most of the encounters being offered. If it weren't a Halo title, it would be thought of more fondly, but it is and so it isn't. Nice video mate, keep up the good work!

One thing that nobody has mentioned here is being able to understand what the Covenant are saying in battle. The little remarks and insults that the enemies used to shout out during encounters was what added to that Halo quirkiness. The loss of this, as well as changes to art style, music and atmosphere all together really shifted Halo 4 very drastically from the Bungie titles perhaps more then they should've. Probably too much change too soon.

Beyond the uh... quite major writing issues of Halo 4, one thing that bugs me specifically about the Cortana rampancy subplot is that 343 very clearly don't understand what rampancy is. They overwrote what it was by Bungie's intention of it. Back in Bungie's day, going back even as far as Marathon, Rampancy was the process of an AI's development growing out of control. The AI would grow to such heights their intellect would be near godly - look at Durandel from the Marathon series to get what I mean. What's funny, much like most things with Halo 4, 343's version of an old concept is completely reversed. Where old rampancy was an AI becoming a well spring of limitless intellect, new rampancy is the AI tearing itself apart. Now, I don't actually mind the new rampancy. If Bungie hadn't had this expectation a while ago, I don't think I'd be bugged by it as much. However, one thing still irks me is the arbitrary (and quite frankly silly) idea that AI just deteriorate after a certain amount of years. Which... maybe if it was a long time, then sure. But they make the number so absurdly low that I can't help but laugh. Imagine making an absurdly expensive piece of military intelligence hardware that is EXPECTED to vanish and go crazy under a decade. I can tell the writers were more interested in their story than any sort of world building ramifications... you know... like most of the stuff good ol' Frankie decided to greenlight, espescially in the cases of the Forerunners, my God. But even worse than lore and meta intentions aside, the Rampancy subplot is bad because it breaks down who Cortana is. Cortana, the always snarky and confident AI companion is reduced to a sad and weepy girl, and it's kinda frustating. Don't get me wrong, the performance from Jen Taylor is great and were she a different character, I think this version of Cortana would be great. However, it's not at all Cortana and I genuinely don't believe THIS is how Cortana would react to being broken apart. If anything I think she'd be more frustrated and defiant to the break down rather than sad and mopey.

She was beautiful, sexy, vulnerable, more human than ever before. Her relationship with the Chief mirrors what's worth saving about humanity, especially at the end of the game where she saves him, and makes it clear she is doing this FOR JOHN, not humanity. It's personal. I never felt so close, so invested in the characters of Master Chief and Cortana. Then Halo 5 happened, which was a Call of Duty clone with a Halo skin over it. Cortana was the bad guy, as antithetical to her previous self as one could imagine. Halo 5 is the moment, THE pin-pointable moment, where the Halo franchise goes completely off the rails.

for me, when i first played Halo 4 i thought it was pretty not bad, the ammo issue is with all difficulties not just legendary. But what makes it bad to me is it's pacing, everything kinda just happens. Like if things were slowed down and we took some time to actually digest the story, learn why this off brand covenant are here, then crash land on the planet due to the gravity well, then "explore" a bit of the lands to understand what's this planet's purpose is rather than just landing then immediately be thrusted into contacting the infinity. Like this whole game could've been two by itself had they slowed down the story and focused on one thing at a time. Could've had better moments with Chief and Cortana to really drive home the feeling of we are really at risk of losing her.

Master chief feels to weak, his shields are almost non existent, and the ammo scarcity is maybe my biggest problem with this game. Let me elaborate. Halo infinite’s warship gbrakkon starts you off with the sidekick and assault rifle. I threw away the sidekick (which was a mistake) but I kept the ar. Despite there being only like 2 ammo caches and 2 assault rifles on the ground I was able to keep it to the end of the mission. in Halo 4’s dawn I ran out of ammo on the ar every 4-5 minutes (not an exaggeration.) and there were hardly any assault rifles in the frigate. To me Halo 4's Cortana story had a bunch of good ideas that were presented really well. The voice actors absolutely delivered the emotion of the writing, it's just the way their characters were written here in no way whatsoever resembles the characters they were for the three games before. It's a sequel that essentially reboots the characters, but it lost the essence of why I loved these characters entirely. I will fight Joe Staten himself that Master Chief was not just a blank slate character. If that's true, why did people riot when Halo 5 tried to usher the Chief into the sunset? Why can't we just replace the Chief with another cool looking helmet and another cool sounding voice? Why did people hate Locke and complain about how he had no personality? 343 removed Chief's entire personality, made him perpetually sad, and called it humanization.
