I think insulating inside was a fantastic idea, sure you lose space but your walls will now be straight! Most renovated houses have such big problems because their walls are not square or straight. Fantastic job as always

I didn't know about hempcrete until you used it 😊 I looked deeper into it recently and found it definitely has a presence here in the USA 😁 I've learned it has some very beneficial aspects, especially pest and rodent deterrence, have had an annoying problem with that last one this season, here the R value vs space required is phenomenal, it's R value far outperforms traditional insulation and it's very cost effective for the added benefits!! In your situation, for breathability of the building alone and in keeping the facade intact, it's totally your best choice!! ❤️❤️❤️👍👍

I think what you loose in space you gain in energy savings and peace of mind.

Even though you lose the mass of the outside walls to "store" heat, you will be able to heat it up faster, because you don't have to heat the walls. Also, I'm pretty sure there's no void (vide) on those walls, they're full walls of probably one and a half bricks. If you want to insulate on the outside, you can not simply remove the outer layer. You would insulate on top of the outside walls, then put another wall (brick, wood etc.) in front of it to cover it up. It would be a lot more work, it would also cost a lot more.

Ah thank you for the update for Catspector! I'm glad to know she is fixed but still is keeping rodent population down. As for the amount of space 'lost' by using insulation inside it's quite nominal when you think about it overall. The the house is quite large to begin with, you're preserving the historical exterior, and will have efficiency when it comes to heating the house. I say that is an overall benefit!

To me, that place is huge, and the space lost to insulation is minimal and well worth it, it'll be a nice cosy place to live and won't cost a fortune to heat and cool.. I'd recommend getting a heat pump system for maximum efficiency.. 😊👍

You are correct; when working on an old house if there is a job you don't want to do, there is always another job in the wings. Very impressed to find out about the insulation you are using. It sounds like you have done your research and picked a very good insulation, especially when you can already notice a difference in the room! Another benefit of insulating from the inside is that you can do it as time and budget allow. Insulating the outside would have had to be done quickly to avoid weather damage so would have needed a professional crew at a high cost. Laura Kamph (on KZbin ) is restoring her timber frame house using a similar system, though clay based. She is using a fiberglass reinforced clay render that may be appropriate for you. In her most recent episode she leaned how to apply it. Looks really easy with an amazing finish.

Where I live in Western Canada house insulation is applied between 2 by 6 or 2 by 4 walls, mostly 2 by 6 then a vapour bearer of poly which is installed to prevent air movement through the wall, all seams are taped. On the outside wall a continuous house wrap is installed prior to finishing. Most houses use high efficiency heating and some apparently are using heat pumps which apparently work down to -30 C give or take depending on there efficiency. Fresh air for the interior is also provided. A big change from when walls were lined with old newspaper.

Maintaining as much of the historic architecture of the building is obviously a priority. Otherwise, everything you have worked so hard to save and protect would have been wasted.

We insulated from inside - insulating from outside or cavity insulation you are heating at least 1 course of brick. Dont forget to map out all your electrical cabling first. Makes a great finished job

If there are conditions where there is below zero outside, it is important that the moisture that is absorbed trough the wall (water wapors move always in the direction towards cold) it is important that the moisture is not freezing inside of the wall. Otherwise the bricks with gradually deteorate.

It’s obvious you two take time to research your options, then look at the good and bad of each and then you make decisions based on what’s best for you, as it should be. There are no bad decisions when you do it that way so don’t listen to the negative feedback! You’re smart and care about the right things. This insulation is going to give you those nice big windowsills that are a great bonus in both form and function. Like Marina said you can feel the difference in warmth already and it will keep you cool in summer too. That’s well worth the small amount of space you sacrifice. Well done! well it has been a while since i sat in class but if i remember correctly your insulation position should be as far inside as possible so that it is also possible to have your moisture barrier at the outer 1/3 of wall thickness which is inside the zone where moisture will freeze or condense ...the point being to let the wall breath moisture out where it can freze in the airspace between the sheathing and insulation outside the building envelope , this only works if the interior is air sealed from the wall cavity . thanks for the videos

When insulating the interior, it is very important to ensure rear ventilation because the shift in the dew point can lead to moisture in the wall.

We own brick commercial buildings so I did a lot of research on this topic. The engineer from New York stated that if you insulate the inside, you should use cellulose because it wicks water like brick does and reduces the freeze thaw effect.

In Australia insulation I done on the inside. But in a wooden or steel frame. Also the brick external is the harder weathering materiel. The softer block should be on the inside . You are right.

yes insulating from the inside is the way to go in this case, you can also impregnate the outside walls so rain cant come into the stone, that makes and extra layer of protection, that you loose some space inside is not realy a problem, the rooms are big enough and smaller space means it heats up faster.

The loss of space isn't such a great disadvantage as this house has plenty of space, it would be more of a problem if the rooms were small already. Anneke needs to slim down a bit, she has a good life.

I used Multipor on similar projects and it looks a bit easier to install. It's made for inside insulation and has a good lambda value.

It definitely is tricky. It’s easy to make serious mistakes when insulating from the inside. As a contractor here in Belgium, I’m not allowed to do it without supervision of an expert. It’s quite an extensive (and expensive) course with exam and control period before you can become an expert. A civil engineering architect is also seen as an expert.

Other than loosing some interior space I don't see any downside to your insulation plan, as long as the material you put in the air space is dry and not compacted too much. If you compact the air space fill too much it simply conduct the cold to the inner wall and you loose the insulative property of the air between the two walls.
