Glad you're taking time out to be with the family, I was lorry driving when my kids were little, have always regretted not being there when they were little. Used to leave early on a Monday and come back home on a Saturday, they changed so much even in a week. Training your cows to come when called saves a lot of foot work. Our cows would come when called at milking time from around a quarter of a mile away. Some of them would always come in before milking time. The same cows were always the first to be milked morning and evening. You should eventually build a news barn for your calves and hay storage. Calves on one side and hay storage on the other. That way you wouldn’t have to store your hay and straw in your loafing barns.

Hi Tom, Personally from a nutritional perspective I would advise keeping your hay and feeding silage/selco to your beef animals. Because the Hay is so dry, dry matter intake will be lower and so will result in reduced performance. Protein generally is lower in hay vs. silage, which is a necessity of driving performance in young stock (not as relevant in fat cover in finishing animals). What about stacking it on pallets outside and covering with a tarpaulin? I would even suggest doing a mix with the Keenan and put in one bale per day of the hay, I feel that would work better than hay alone. It will still prolong your silage as much as feeding all hay now to then switch to all silage when hay is gone, and be less of a digestive change when that switch occurs! Just my opinion! Happy to chat further if you wish! Thanks Tom & team, great content as always!
