Forehead gets so cold for me too sometimes! I have a very large winter specific Buff that helps. Super long and has a thick wool bottom that sits over my neck. I wrap the rest up and over the top of my head to cover my forehead. I can easily pull it down away from my mouth. When it’s like this morning and it’s about 0° and negative windchill I wear goggles with a snowboard helmet and it all covers up nice but I can see so much and have my face clear when I want it to be.

In Canada we call Headwear open around the face but covering neck, forehead etc. A Balaclava. Essential for me in Temps due to the wind chill exaggerated by moving at speed on a bike.

Tim, that was a perfect Winter Industrial Gravel ride. You are truly a bicyclist that gets out there regardless of the weather. I bicycle commuted to work for 12 years, year round. Everyone always asked me, "how do you do that in the cold". Im like, you just wear the right gear and make it happen. The hardest part is the prep. Once you're out there its magic. To address your cold forehead, pick up a ski helmet. They are insulated, cover ears and go low over the forehead. Post season you can find them cheaper on clearance. I’m a skier, so I owned one already. Great for winter fat tire snow biking.

Its a good suggestion but I don't think it is for me. I just want something that comes down farther under my normal helmet as I don't have any trouble keeping the top of my head or ears warm. I'm afraid something like that would overheat me. I want wool to be what is keeping me warm.

We got a bit last night after this video but nothing deep. We had some lake effect earlier in the year - if the weather comes straight from the north we can get buried from it. That big east coast storm just missed us as I saw all the snow they got in PA just an hour or two from here. I think I will try something like that out - it really is my main issue on shorter rides. I actually haven't been riding the trainer because of the cat - he isn't afraid of my bikes or noise so I'm worried he will try to check out the spokes!

Sometimes I just hose it down and dry it off - if I have more time I’ll make a bucket with some dish soap. Car wash works good too. I had pogies on this when it had flat bars - they don’t work with the corner bars. I like them because the extra dexterity I get by wearing less heavy gloves - but I don’t find them to be any warmer - in fact I think they are over rated in that sense. People make them out to be way warmer then they are.

I use a Buff devise in Balaclava mode, like you i like my mouth free, it's odd that such thin material works so well, even at -7 c. (19f) . And chunky wool mittens/ fingersless gloves which i think are designed for hunting/shooting for the hands. Wool everywhere for me, 3 layers of jumper and a pakamac on top if it's windy, or when i stop. I think a place to coat up and more importantly strip down when you come in is a good idea if you have room. This cold bullsheet makes me appreciate Spring.

I use a regular helmet with a winter ski mask with an opening for the mouth. Cold is never a problem with the forehead. For extreme Canadian cold temperatures, it's better to use ski googles as well, as it protects the nose a bit as well. Cycling shoes are too cold for me, even with overshoes and thick wool socks, so I use regular winter boots with flat pedals. Haven't tried winter cycling boots, they are too expensive and it seems that the road salt will destroy your clips in one season. I ride 500-1000km/mth in the winter. YMMV.

I never ride clipless so not an issue for me though I think I am going to upgrade to better boots next year(or find something on clearance some Spring). Being that this weather is actually unusual for Ohio I don't have the need for the googles or face coverings as they would only be worn a couple of times - that being said I will invest in a cap that covers more of my head.

Most days, I do a bandana do-rag under a stretchy-wool cap , that's usually good to 25 F or so, if there's no wind (we get ridiculous winds here) . Just putting on the 60/40 light LL Brean windbreaker's hood over that will kill most of the additional pain without constricting under the helmet. If it gets full force, I'll do a relatively thick pile Balaclava that has an ingenious two part nose/mouth cover instead of the holes that your local Antifa or burglar uses. Loosen the helmet straps and tensioner thing. The Balaclava's upper strip lays unobtrusivley , believe it or not, on the bridge of your nose and cheeks , and the lower, wider section covers your chin and neck. You can breathe , nose and mouth, and it doesn't freeze up from exhale vapors. Amazing. Draw string for fit. I have two of these, absolutely love them . I often also wear two heavy scarves , twisted together , oh the fashion. Without that hoodie, I've had days where my jaw freezes and I can't even talk coherently.

Greetings from sunny southwest Ontario. For winter I use an older helmet and tape the top vents with clear packing tape but leave the rear vents open. This reduces heat loss and keeps the wet out. A light balaclava works to retain some heat to your ears and face. This morning is -15c with a wind chill of -25 and 30kph winds. As cold as it gets here, I don't complain too much. My sister used to live 6 hours north of here where the actual temperature would be -30 to -40c and winter lasts from November to April. Love the concept of a staging / prep area. I love the challenge of riding in super cold, but find myself scrambling for all the gear. And where in the heck do I tuck away all my lights??? Went out with Yeti on Sunday, and wanted to go out again since I was prepped (but, I didn't.. ha!) I have the winter challenge of not having space (basement or garage) to clean. Hard to do that in 10 degrees in a driveway. Someone on the yeti talked about someone else who has a portable pressure washer for that reason. Agree on the getting too warm part. Nice problem to have unless you sweat and then stop moving. Layering is the way to go, just don't restrict body movement. Just like hiking - feels good when putting in the effort then getting in a good exercise along with being outdoors. Thanks again for a great vid! Inspiring me to continue on my organization efforts.

I think it's been mentioned somewhere already but I use a Giro Ledge snowboard helmet, it's fantastic and has removable ear covers that pull off easy if you start building up heat. And when days reach temperatures like these or colder I wear goggles that seal up to the brim of the helmet. The rest of my face is covered with a beard that ices up nicely and creates great insulation. This is pretty comfortable to - 20 c (-4) With the ear covers removed It's comfortable to about freezing. any warmer and I switch back to a normal helmet.

Being that these temps are pretty unusual for us I don't really want to invest in stuff that will mostly be to hot. I think I am going to try and find a wool cap that I can just pull down farther over my forehead. I definitely see the reasons for more gear farther north.

My fingertips are my annoyance in winter. Even with nice gloves and smart wool liners. Maybe I’ll try something like the lobsters. Just hard to operate the GP. Anywho, nice vid & always. ☮️

Pogies/bar mits are a great solution to be able to operate and not have to wear the thicker gloves. I have a love/hate relationship with the lobsters - they work awesome but I take them off and struggle to get them on so much. I can't count the times I have to take them back off to lock my door. Cheers!

I acclimatize after a few days and lose the brainfreeze. Not enjoyable but I haven't found a solid solution yet. I wear a waterproof cap for the wind and a gaiter over my ears and like half the scalp.

To each their own, but . . . That hipster look may look cool (to you) but its not very conducive to having a great ride.
