After getting older and older, I realized and saw how Jerry was actually the REAL troublemaker towards Tom in most occasion. He takes advantages of Spike's protection and goes as far a falsely accuse Tom for everything around and bothers him when he minds his own business or uses Tom's belongings and food. However Tom does pretty much the same every now and then to Jerry. However you cannot deny how Jerry treats Tom in the most horrible and unjust way

I remember watching this when I was a kid, and in one of the episodes (I have no clue which) a bottle of booze drops into Tom's mouth and his eyes turned into a fuel gauge and the needle slowly turned to point to 'full'. @@ToonStarterz I kinda wish you looked over the Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones shorts to see if there was something that made audiences jump to the conclusion that Jerry is the instigator. I think there’s an example of this “Jerry is Evil” propaganda in “Buddies, Thicker than Water”, but Jerry was the one who saved Tom; in fact, when the woman of the apartment saw the cat, Tom exposed Jerry and got rid of the mouse so he could be living comfortably. Tom took advantage of Jerry’s hospitality and backstabbed him when Tom was gonna be thrown out. Jerry had to play ghost to scare him, until they were out in the snow and Jerry is exposed as not being a ghost. Tom was about to kill Jerry before he fell down the building. Jerry didn’t want to rescue Tom after that moment, so he sent Tom a pair of Ice Skates and a Hockey Stick.

I have always been a fan of Tom and believed that he was the good guy. Even though, there were so many fans of Jerry, I knew he was a troublemaker. But so happy, now that some people are getting to understand the truth of Tom and Jerry. Tom has a bigger heart than Jerry. For example, in episode 'Snowbody Loves Me' you can see that even though Tom kicks him out in cold, he can't stay happy inside and because he cares of Jerry so much he goes out and and gets him back inside and give him some warm liquid to drink which makes him feel better. But Jerry would not do something like this for Tom. He is mean and arrogant. It is amazing how Tom manages to stay friends with Jerry, although he is acting very much like an asshole most of the time. Tom can also be like one too, but not so often. Two of my favorite episodes where Tom wins are 'Timid Tabby' and "Heavenly Plus".

I always thought Tom did what was necessary so he could have a place to live while Jerry would go out of his way to embarrass,humiliate,emasculate,and abuse Tom infront of anyone of who’s near. I haven’t watched the series in years but I remember precisely what Jerry did and took away from Tom. I mean Tom would literally move out and find a new home and Jerry would just follow him,Tom would find love and even would leave Jerry alone but Jerry likes Tom’s attention so he takes away his love from him. He even framed Tom of taking Spike’s kid from him multiples times. I always knew when I was a kid Jerry was the antagonist. It might’ve took me a while but yeah Jerry is the antagonist. I mean Jerry in some occasions would be the hero but if you compare it all to the series he’s still pretty bad and abusive. What’d you guys think?

I think "Jerry is the real villain!" comes from assuming we should dislike Tom, because he's a mean cat (cats are usually bastards in Western fiction) hunting a poor little mouse, that the cartoon is set up with Jerry as the underdog, and then they watch (or remember watching) and remember all the times Jerry is an asshole, and think they have spotted a prejudice, or that they have deconstructed the cartoon and found a flaw. But as you state, we're not assumed to dislike Tom - the conflict is supposed to be two-sided. That Jerry can be an assprat is not unwanted or unintended - it's part of the dynamics.

Guys can get annoyed when their friend isn't spending as much time with them because of a girl without it being gay. There just wouldn't be anything to keep the story moving forward if he was fine with it. I just hate how all guy relationships are seen from such a black and white perspective. Guys have guy best friends that they see as brothers, the same way women need female relationships. It doesn't make them macho dude bros or gay. I just find it weird and forced how so many people try to see something gay in something that isn't necessarily there. I mean, if it was Nightmare on Elm St. 2 then there would be a difference, but I see this trend of KZbinrs cramming stuff into tv shows and movies with absolutely no proof.

I'd say they're a neutral against each other, don't forget there are these instances where Tom was just asking to get his ass whooped by the mouse: Tried to eat a fish Jerry was just vibing with. Stole a duck egg from it's mama. Literally slapped Tuffy's bum, when all Jerry did was take the mice in and ensured Tuffy was fed. And sometimes would just try and go after Jerry when he hasn't done shit to him yet.

I remember when I watched any old Tom and Jerry episodes as a kid as both characters' morality are whatever the writers wanted. One of which is Jerry being the hero protecting helpless animals, such as birds, elephants, fish, puppies, kittens, lions and other mice, like nibbles, from Tom as the main antagonist, and sometimes there are animals that protect Jerry from Tom himself, such as Spike. There's also Tom that did any activities that disturbed Jerry's peace and causing a conflict. Jerry also finds and steals food for him to survive while be stalked and chased down by Tom as the only one that needs to be taken out in order to achieve it. Jerry can be also be a villain whenever Tom's deal was to not disturb a character, including a dog, that poses a threat to him, and it's justified that Jerry needs to disturb the character to get rid of Tom who chases him around in violent and gruesome ways, or when he becomes a strict parent to Tuffy who puts either both in danger. There are several superhero episodes of Jerry where whenever he's overwhelmed by Tom, he gets any special and wired abilities, such as invisbility, disguises, super strength, speed, growth, magic and science experiments, to fight back. There's are other episodes where Tom wins either by going berserk on Jerry and defeats him for the mouse's actions, or how they cooperate when dealing with any series of unfortunate events, and Tom does have sympathetic qualities, such as when he almost killed Jerry in two episodes. So why can't Jerry be the hero when Kayla finds him attacked by Tom who caused her to lose her job, and keep Jerry as a pet or assistant, while Tom is hired as one of the human villains, knowing he can cause chaos whenever he chases down Jerry, to infilterate the hotel, allowing them to steal money much easier, which made Tom realize he's being used, and in the end, Jerry and Tom became friends and co workers? It would've made an interesting movie.

You gotta question why in both this film and most of the direct to DVD movies, Tom and Jerry end up becoming somewhat friends at some point. Like, in the 1992 film, it was a negative having Tom and Jerry become friends for most of it but it was unique; no one had really seen it before apart from when they ally in the shorts to take down a common foe. Whereas now, nearly every film forces the duo to ally for no reason to fit the plot.

While I agree with your points and it is true that both are simply just using the advantage of what they have... though since Jerry has the brain... his methods of tormenting Tom are very often much more cruel. He just knows how to do it and he´ll go whatever it takes. And there were also points where Tom did nothing to him and he just started the whole thing. Like "Fraidy Cat" or "The Baby Puss". I´d say Tom is the Goliath that wants to have power. He is the muscle. But when Jerry has the brain... he can be incredibly cruel and very vengeful. The best example of this is in my opinion the episode "Salt Water Tabby". That is why I think Jerry is the bigger villain. But no... Tom is not a saint.

As a HUGE Tom and Jerry fan (only the Hanna-Barbera era, haven't watched Deitch or Jones), I just want to thank you for making this spectacular video because there's not a lot of us out there. This is by far the best video about the cartoon on KZbin. No one else bothers to do their research it seems. It's so annoying when people spread misinformation like "Blue Cat Blues" was the last episode or, as you discussed, the claim that Jerry is the villain. Yes, there's some shorts were Jerry is more antagonist and Tom is the victim, but for every one like that, I can name another example where TOM was the villain and Jerry was the victim. Consider "Cassanova Cat," "Zoot Cat," and "Cat Fishin." All three shorts open immediately with Tom holding Jerry in captivity against his will (in "Cassanova" and "Zoot" it's to woo a lady cat, but in "Cat Fishin" the first thing Tom does is use Jerry as bait). However, again, there's also some where Tom is clearly the victim, like "The Cat Concerto," when Jerry sabotages Tom's piano performance for no reason and then takes the spotlight at the end! So overall, it depends on the episode. Each of the short cartoons are self-contained and different in their own way (there's no canon or sense of continuity), so you can't make generalizations like "Jerry is aggressor."

Honestly… if people wanna hate someone on T&J, the Jerry haters should watch the Gene Deitch Collection of T&J and look at *Clint Clobber* .😆 Those who watched Gene Deitch’s Collection, Clint is actually even more hated than Jerry, despite Jerry being portrayed as a villain to some fans, including the ones watching this.😯 When it comes to this video, though, personally… I only think Jerry is an a$$ when he takes advantage of Tom being threatened (even with death) by his enemies. @@AgustinHaacker1026 Maybe it’s because of her nickname being “Mammy”, which they should’ve upgraded to Big-Mama Two-Shoes if they want to go for the informal definition of “Mammy” (being a nickname for mother) rather than the offensive (a black nursemaid). I mean, there were a couple of instances where it would be the case on the later, but it’s very rare. Shorts like Saturday Evening Puss treat her more as her own person and being independent.

uhm... Tom and Jerry are not Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Yes, Bill Hana and Joe Barbera did made the originals cartoon, but this was before they started their own company that gave us Flintstones, Jetsons, and Scooby-Doo. The original Tom and Jerry cartoons are MGM cartoons.

Most artist don't actually own the IP they create, since they end up selling them to the company they work for. That was the case when they created Tom and Jerry for MGM, and this would be the same with Scooby-Doo later on. The popular franchise, is indeed a Hannah-Barbara cartoon, but they didn't create it. Scooby-Doo was originally created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, and bought by the Hannah-Barbara company. This is how copyright works. This is why Scooby-Doo is considered a Hannah-Barbara cartoon, and it's for this same reason why Tom and Jerry isn't. Not like it matters anyway, since both MGM and Hannah-Barbara would be bought and are currently owned by Warner Bros.
