Thank you so much for your posts each week! I just found you a couple of weeks back, and now I look for your as I begin to prepare for the upcoming Sunday. Your Old Testament ties and explanations for the New Testament text are most helpful.

I may have missed it but I think Matt 11:14 has some bearing. Jesus says, "if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come." This encapsulates the "yes and no" answer that Chad Bird gives us.

I really enjoyed this. My question is this... Do you think where John the Baptist said, "I baptize with water, but the one who comes after me will baptize you with fire." has some correlation to when Elijah had the "showdown" and had the bull drenched in water and then God consumed the bull and all of the wood and everything with fire? I am thinking that John the Baptist did the preparation and then Jesus did the miracles that proved God to be the true God which would cause the people to believe that God is the true God. Right?

This does not correlates to Elijah asking God to send fire down from heaven to consume everything with fire. NO. John referred to Jesus, when he said; he who comes after me will baptise you with Holy Spirit and Fire. But if you look at very closely, Jesus did not baptise anyone with Holy Spirit & Fire, rather died on the cross for our sins. He did promise to his disciples, they will receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit & Fire, after he rose from the death & go up to heaven, he'll ask his father to send down the Holy Spirit as he as promised. Yes, he did sent the Holy Spirit to his disciples has he had promised, but not everyone around the world received the baptism of Holy Spirit. Regardless of what denominations (religion) they are, they only received the baptism of John (the water baptism), but still lacking the baptism of Holy Spirit & Fire, to this date. Everyone needs the baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire-John 3.5-8.

1 Corinthians 2:11 KJV - For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

I think there is more to be said about John quoting Isaiah. Isaiah foretells Jesus's death, which is upon the people's denial of Christ. Just as Jesus went seemingly out of his way to fulfill every prophecy previously put forth, John is also making sure to not obstruct this, if he fully convinces the all questioners that he IS Elijah, he could or perhaps feel that he was trying to obstruct the prophecy of Jesus's death...

Sir, John the Baptist is a type of Elijah who is to come; Matthew 17:11. Malachi 4:4, 5. He will show up in the end times (now) and will preach from the "Little Scroll" of Revelation 10. It was published under the title, "Must Believe in Jesus Name" by Ricky Eugene Woods. Subtitle "Book of Elijah". I am from the tribe of Benjamin. Yes, I have access to heaven and the throne of God. The first letters in my three names are REW; The last three letters in Hebrew: the last letters in my three names are YES: the first three letters in Yeshua.

But should we take John's perception of himself or Jesus's perception of him? The same John who referred to Jesus as "the lamb of God", later questioned the identity of Jesus as the Christ. Seems like John's perception of Jesus was somehow biased as his perception of himself was too. When the disciples asked about Elijah coming before the messiah, Jesus answered "Elijah has already come" referring to the same Elijah whom the disciples and all the Jews were expecting. The prophecies were not clear as to HOW Elijah would come back. The statement "in spirit and power of Elijah" might be complementary to the prophecies but I don't believe we can argue with what Jesus himself said, and He said the Elijah that the Jews were expecting had already come.

Great as always, brother. Question: I think in our day we look at the prophets in the OT and automatically give precedence to "the writing or written prophets." Elijah is so much in the consciousness of later, post captivity Jews yet wrote nothing that we know of. His prominence to the Jews is obviously not tied to his writing or not writing. Is that in some respect because of the oral nature of their communication? Was oral and written seen as on par with one another? Or was it that Elijah's mission was so distinct in the Jew's thought?
@chadbird15173 жыл бұрын
In Elijah's case (as distinct, for instance, from Elisha) what made him rise to prominence was (1) his highly unusual exit from this world and (2) Malachi's prophecy of his return before the Messiah's advent. We are never told why some earlier prophets tended to communicate less in writing. I suspect that, for the contemporaries of the prophets, their oral and written communication was on par with one another. My hunch is that some -- if not most -- of what we have written down by Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc. is more for posterity than it was for their contemporaries. They were preachers. What did get written down had probably already been proclaimed. There is also evidence in Isaiah that he had disciples, so it could be that his students recorded his words. Hope that helps and makes sense.

@@chadbird1517 Thanks. And that is helpful. Are you aware of a multi-volume Roman Catholic resource called “The Navarre Bible”? I find some of the commentary from the Fathers helpful. Filtering from our perspective sometimes necessary.

For those who misunderstood this guy reading malachi 5 Lo, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 6He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse... He wasnt refering to the time jesus said elijah had already came to his Disciples, that scripture simply means elijah is one of the two witnesses in revelation 11 1 14 which obviously didnt come yet
@dngministries144 Жыл бұрын
My question is your stance on if John the baptizer was the full fulfillment of the Malachi prophecy or if it was partial.
@Travis_Truth9 ай бұрын
By the way, you have a flaw in your interpretation. Yochanan does not mean "God the gracious", in hebrew it means "God pardoned". "Chen" does mean "grace", as in "motzoh chen bamidbar" ("found grace in the desert"), but "chanan" is from the root chet-nun-nunsofit, which means to pardon. Perhaps the author in John 1:6-8 felt a need to write that he was not the light but came to bear witness about the light, because his name indicated that he was divine and could pardon the sins of others ...
