My grandparents worked for McKee Foods from age 22 until they both retired. The company was always very thoughtful of their employees in their experience. But the first time I ever heard of Seventh Day A. As a child was when my grandmother had to explain it to me when I asked why I couldn’t go and watch the machines make the cakes on a Saturday. As a lifelong native Chattanoogan, Little Debbie has always been apart of our lives. Just like Double Cola and Moonpies, Little Debbie is found in almost every pantry, Store, and shop in the Tennessee Valley. Down the road from the Corporate Office of McKee foods, is the Little Debbie Store, where their boxes of cakes are discounted. It's worth a stop if you're ever in Collegedale, TN.

Little Debbie was a big part of my life as a child growing up in the Chattanooga area in the 1960s. I enjoyed going on school field trips to the factory in Collegedale where every child went away with a snack cake. Little Debbie was a local supporter of school and civic events. Several times my class or Cub Scout troup was on the Bob Brandy Show on ABC Channel 9. Little Debbie (McKee Bakery) was a sponsor and Little Debbie treats were regularly given as prizes. I won an entire box of Oatmeal Creme Pies by giving the closest guess to "How far is it from Chattanooga to ____________?" Decades later, I still enjoy the occasional Little Debbie snack, but can't consume them as frequently as I could as a child. This video brought back great memories. Thank you.

I can still destroy a box of swiss rolls or nutty butty bars in a startlingly small amount of time. 2. Hostess would do well to focus on their fruit pie line, something Deb has never mastered.

Little Debbie's is about as foreign to us Aussies as Vegemite is to the rest of the World... Maybe one day Weird History Food could do an episode on Vegemite? Vegemite is an acquired taste that not even all Australians like, but many of us love. It's usually served on toasted white bread or as a cheese and Vegemite sandwich, and I've heard of some people adding Vegemite to stews or casseroles. Thanks for sharing the Weird History of Little Debbie's, It was great.

no way it is 'as foreign' because you guys have other snack cakes. no one else but you and the uk has vegemite (as far as i know). and there's no equivalent. you can actually find vegemite in the states i got it and tried it once and thought it tasted like metal boiled in blood...

Total nostalgia, but also total sugar (and I'm a sweets person). The iced cakes are way too much for me except on occasion. I like the strawberry rolls as well but scrape the icing off of the bottom, so overwhelmingly sweet.

HERE'S some history... Little Debbie's used to be TWICE the size before shrink-flation the past five years or so! The oatmeal cream pies were at least 4" across, for example. And they used to include ingredients we could pronounce.

Always looking foward to seeing another video from you guys, been subscribed since the beginning. You asked what food I want to see next, and being European I feel that this channel is very American centric. It's a lot of fun to learn about the history of your food, but looking into the other parts of the world would be a lot of fun too! Hopefully you'd take me up on the suggestion, and maybe i'll get to see a european food history? (Maybe even a danish one!) Keep up the great work!

Both of my parents worked at Mckee Foods in the late 70’s/early 80’s. My mom was in college next door at Southern Adventist University (known as Southern Missionary College back then) while my dad was a college dropout. Mom was on the assembly line and dad drove a forklift in the warehouse. My dad got to meet Debbie herself and seems to have had a crush on her (by the way he talks about her) back then. Though people often mistook them for siblings due to both of them being about the same age with fiery red hair 😂. Apparently they and most employees were banned from the room that contained the machine that rolled the Swiss Cake Rolls because it was (and maybe still is) a trade secret. All competing products were rolled by hand at the time so the machine apparently saved Little Debbie a lot of money back in the day.

But yes it’s safe to say I grew up on Little Debbie snack cakes. I still have a habit (in my mid-30’s) of buying a box and then eating the whole thing in one shot and afterward feeling nauseous AF so I don’t do that often. 😆
