Mistakes happen, I would still count finishing a game as a success :)

The fact that you managed to make something and publish it, is a win on my book. Looking forward to see what you do next 💪

This made me go back and see when I created the directory for my current Godot project. 7 months of "dev while having an unrelated full time job" for a pretty simple concept. Thanks for the perspective! Great video as always.

You were an insane motivator for me to get a project started, even though I was in the same boat in which a project I wanted to finish practically failed this year. There's always another year!

Really useful takeaways in my opinion! I think you did a great job assessing what you can do better for your next game. I've fallen into a handful of these traps myself

Thanks for making the video, I’d like to share my thoughts and experiences on a couple points. 1. 1 year is probably way too long for a game like dashpong, with proper planning before starting it probably could have been done in a couple months. I spent way too long on my most recent game and I won’t be doing that again. 2. The local multiplayer thing might have been a sales kill if the game doesn’t have AI to play against, if it does have AI then it wasn’t. 3. I think dashpong has the perfect vision for the game it was, people love physics way more than arcade scripted events due to its always varied nature, in the same way apex is fun for hours due to each match being different. 4. If you couldn’t afford help I would not beat yourself up over it. Over 90% of business start with bootstrapping. 5. The price is fine, in my experience people won’t buy things that are too cheap. It’s more important to have even number pricing like 8.99 instead of 7.99. Just price what you think is fair and if people buy it you can raise it a little bit. 6. The steam analytics are a lie, that “conversion rate” they give you is just made up, their platform is 98% bots. You can install google analytics to the store page to see what I mean. Steam supposedly has 140+ million active users a month yet all of the games on steam never too more than 40 million players so they have like 100 million bots probably. Try epic they will be a lot better and the graphics will probably be more appealing to their customer base.

Thanks for you insights. Ouch, that's harsh, but yeah "Local Multiplayer Only" is indeed a hard sell. Another thought: Maybe your target platform wasn't the right for the game? I could imagine local multiplayer, working/selling on "Living Room" console like the Wii or Switch connected to a big TV, but hardly on a PC (which in my mind is still kinda trapped in the Working/office room - or at best notebook in the living room - but these are hardly ever used for local PVP). I know getting Godot to work on a console is even harder, but maybe find a publisher willing to publish it there?

I'm surprised in your development you didnt make a rudimentary AI for the other paddle player
@MrEliptik2 жыл бұрын
Making an AI to handle the paddles and the ball is harder than it might seem, at least for me. As I said in the video, is was caught in development, I didn't think AI was needed because I didn't even think about people trying to play alone!

Thanks a lot! With writing recording and editing I'm at around 19hours logged. Keep in mind I'm not 100% productive during these hours so probably around 16-17h of work

awesome video, thanks for the tips, about the error on not investing money, I agree with you, on Godot Kart Racing, I'm holding the $ a little, but already spent a lot, and atm I'm stuck, but the fact that you invested on your own project, your mind doesnt allow you to give up!

Nice analysis, I like your pragmatism and honesty. I know you have learned many things through this process and because of this, I know you know it was worth it. Despite all these mistakes you are mentioning I also know you are proud of what you have achieved, I may be wrong, please correct me if this is the case. You have demonstrated to yourself you can create (and release) a professional commercial game. Now it is just all about doing it again :), and, if necessary, again and again ;)
@MrEliptik Жыл бұрын
That's exactly it! It was a nice first experience and I learned a ton. As you said, now it's about doing it again and hopefully be able to make it more profitable!

Anyone read "The Lean Startup"? I do gamedev as an hobby. Whipping myself to do short, crappy game, that I am unhappy or uninterested with... Sounds like an horrible work (MVP EXACTLY). Having a plan and set expectations is a better idea.

Also your game has to be unique. And more sounds game has - better. Sounds have to be good. Music has to be good. Or else it will put player to sleep. Of course some players like relaxing music. If you people are creating a game i will a good example. There is a game called: Robin Hood The Legend of Sherwood. Its the best game i have ever played, with view from up. The acting voices are amazing. Create a game similar to that game, and people will play. Edit: Some people say its better to play that game on GOG.

I would say even less if possible. That way you get more experiences and each time it gets easier
