The origin of the idiom is way back in the mid 1500s. Back then, "have" only meant "to keep". Only fairly recently was "to eat" added to the meanings of "have". So basically it parses as "you can't keep your cake and eat it, too", which makes much more sense.

My spanish teacher in high school was a Venezuelan man, sweet as can be, truly an incredible influence. And every single day before class I would teach him an english saying like "knock yourself out" and he would try to figure out a way to fit it in during the lesson. Every single time he did it, he'd give me sort of a nervous glance, but he always nailed it and I always gave him a thumbs up. I worked with a Romanian lass who didn't understand English idioms either, so she had fun with it instead and would interpret them in a sexual way and pretend to be offended and make a big joke out of it. I loved working with her because she had a wicked sense of homour. But I made the mistake of once saying "I am totally down with the kids", you know, I am hip, cool, caught up with the latest trends, though being ironic, meaning that I am not. And that was 2 weeks of her (jokingly) asking if I touch kids.

One of my best friends is from Poland and his mom wrote a book translating/explaining idioms between Polish and Swedish. A lot of Swedish idioms have a similar feeling to English, but Polish idioms seemed a bit more different.

Brilliant!! I have a similar story, not that anyone will see it, but here goes anyway.. I had a Polish work friend, I was a chef and he was a kitchen porter. He learned English as he was doing the job, amazing on his part cause he didn't speak a word of it when he started. We would all drink together and when we cheersed we would interchangeably use the Polish and the English - "nostrovia!" being the polish word for it, which he said it meant "to your health." they also used this interchangeably when people would sneeze. Anyway, one day during work, the head chef loudly sneezed as the Polish KP walked past, which he loudly replied to the head chef by shouting "Cheers!"

Too literally translated phrases are also a ton of fun. From "Something is no yes" (something is wrong), "Thank yo from the mountain" (Thanks in advance), to "Don't make village" (behave yourself in civilized manner), all of these bring a smile and a lot of confusion

"Badly translated", especially idioms is a great hobby. The simplest way to simulate it would be to put idioms into google translate and translate it back and forth between far away languages a few times, but even just a simple synonyms tool could do wonders here, as it completely ruins the interpretability of idioms or statements. For english speakers - imagine translating "is there still beef between the two of us" in a way that forces you to think "is there still literal piece of meat between the two of us". I imagine some of the google translates could have a formulas that rate translations in the way that increase accuracy (for example - translate as long parts at once instead of translating words in isolation, one by one). I imagine there is an API somewhere that could lead into a "wrong answers only" meme "translator" that uses high tech to know which one of the translations is correct, just to more accurately pick out the other, more humorous one.

Especially since in Polish you do not indicate the killing part, additionally, it is build in. You either "shot somone dead" or "did not shoot them dead, but only shot them". "Zastrzelić" or "postrzelić" there is no ambiguity. "Knocking someone OUT" would translate to "zajebać", which would translate back to "kill someone by beating them to death". I get her confusion.

My brother has ASD, and I remember once during our childhood he became very confused because our dad asked if we should skip our breakfast. We're Norwegian and "to skip" is an idiom that translates directly to English as "to jump over." He didn't understand why we would put our plates of food on the floor and jump over it.

I’m bilingual but my parents were trilingual with English being their 3rd. The older I get, the more my respect for them learning this crazy language explodes. Idioms are hard enough, and then good luck understanding slang from different age groups and especially regions. And then good luck understanding different American accents on top of all that, especially if you visit the south. Lmao. I’m 24 and already getting old enough to not be 100% in the loop of all the slang, and this is my _home_

Videogames taught me english. Watching series withouth subtitles honed it. I can understand coloquial metaphors just fine. But it's surprising how the english language relies so much on idioms.
