The Stormlight Archives makes much more sense if you start with the premise that the Alethi are a nation of bone-headed knights who haven't had a new thought in centuries.

"I dont feel that I want to reread Way of Kings" is a phrase that is not said a lot. Is incredible the amount of things that we miss the first read. Some actually enjoy more the book the second time because there is so much to unpack I would be surprised if you do not get the reread wish in the future.

I’m a big fan of this series, but I hated Way of Kings on re-read, because now you do know the answers to so much, and that makes it EVEN MORE PLODDING. imo

@@tylertopalian1625 Yeah, I'll dip in on occasion and re-read certain chapters, and if I'm doing a 'full' re-read, I'm more or less just reading about half of the chapters. Most of WoK doesn't have material that's worth digging further into after the first read. The chapters that do will absolutely reward that effort, but most don't.

Nerdy: “I really don’t like or care about prophecy” Clarus: “PLEASE don’t point out things we missed, I want to pick up on them on a reread” The community and even some of the mods: “HERE IS A PROPHECY YOU MISSED, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT?!?!”

The thing is, its not a prophecy, and whoever couched this blurb as something that is essential reading is ridiculous.

@@alphaomegagiantThey're talking about the death rattle about Kaladin jumping the chasm which is kinda prophetic. Generally speaking, though, future-vision stuff is limited in ways we've already seen in Cosmere books and was spelled out by the Almighty at the end, making it easier to accept for me. Prophecy stuff isn't really my favorite either. (They did kinda touch on the prophecy stuff with the "one will betray them" stuff too though)

The book starts with a treaty being signed between the Alethi and the Parshendi. They had diplomatic relations. They might have an idea of population size before the war started.

Kind of a bummer book club overall. Nerdy's lack of investment in the series and disinterest in the big hype moments was a let down. I get that Alethi society sucks, but its about the characters navigating a shitty society that most of them have little control over.

i know what nerdy means on the "it's magic not science!" bit, but i really don't like the distinction. Science is the ordered systematization of reality, and in a reality with 'magic' that magic is just another phenomena to explore, describe and manipulate. Even if some sentient entity or entities dole out or otherwise govern that power and it's rules, there are still going to be underlying principles that can be looked for, behavior that can be documented and studied, and a history and perhaps politics that can inform how we interact with those entities. We don't know the ultimate origins of the shards and their power. They could theoretically be the remnants a reality manipulation technology based in the normal physical laws of our own universe, left behind by some predecessor civilization. We ourselves are trying to do that in some ways at the moment. Physicist are creating novel quasi-particles with properties that cannot arise in nature, basically doing the equivalent to bugging reality out to make an unintended object as you might do in a videogame. We have literally no way to know where that might lead us, but if in a couple million years some new civilization came upon the results, used it but didn't understand it, they would call it magic as well.

22.30 - you nailed it Nerdy. Not the not a good book part, thats subjective obviously BUT the it's not just a book part. Thats correct, this is a prologue, a thousand odd pages of awesome prologue for a massive story - looking back on it, it appears to be the most masterful prologue ever penned imo, but we wont know that until reading the next book tbh to see if he sticks it. Which, is not exactly a weak suit of the mans so i'm personally not too worries about it lol.

"God" invents a nearly perfect magic storage system and gives it to man. Man instantly uses it for money to be hoarded and never again used for its actual purpose for many centuries.

Nerdy is right. All the magic is derived from the shards.. Seen as godpower. Sanderson had lots of science classes in college (mom wanted him to be an MD doctor) and he liked the idea of using magic and God powers in similar structures and forms as science. Like a scientific approach to magic and God's as if they were both real. Structure... Science... But...Magic and gods.

If a god exists in reality, then it is part of the natural world and all that is derived from it is part of nature. Science can thus be applied to it.
@thepocketboy

@@Merecir I agree. Though supernatural by definition is not part of the natural world and therefor can't be touched by science. Atleast that's how I see it. When I used the phrase "exist in reality" I meant it as in. If God actually existed or not. Though it could be read as if I was referring to God existing as part of reality vs existing outside of reality. Not sure if that makes sense. That said I don't buy the claim that God exists and therefore my stance is you can't scientifically measure anything that doesn't exist. :)
@Merecir
@Merecir 2 ай бұрын
@@thepocketboy Again, if god/souls/ghosts/demons/santa/fairies existed in real life they would not be supernatural, they would be natural. It is just because they DO NOT exist that we can define them as supernatural. "existing outside of reality"... Reality is what exists. So anything 'beyond' reality is just imaginary, and does not exist.

If the book club format is not ideal for these books, then change up the format. Don't have to go after quantity of content, read more at a stretch and put out fewer episodes. At least be interested enough in following the chapters as a structure like when you did early WoT.

Vance isn't a good VP pick, but it's hard for Dems to criticize too much when Kamala is your candidate, who didn't even go through a primary process and nobody wanted her but out of obligation is being handed the nomination. Unfortunate circumstances all around.
