Was Qiu Qiyuan's 15.5 Beam Overscored?

Qiu Qiyuan scored a massive 15.5 on beam at the DTB Pokal Cup this weekend with an insane 7.0 D-score! This is the highest beam score we've seen this quad and even since the old code with much less harsh scoring in 2016! This video analyzes her stellar routine to determine in 15.5 is an accurate score under this code, since we rarely see any beam routines over 8 in execution anymore. She is such a star, and I hope to see her shine in Paris!

Firstly, I would love for her to win uneven bars gold with a 7.0D bars routine (finally connecting the Downie + Pak) Secondly, watching Qiu and Zhou Yaqin going head to head with 7.0 beam routines in the final would be awesome. I would love 2 Americans (Simone and Suni/Skye) to join them and fight for medals. Thirdly, when was the last time we had an uneven bars and balance beam Olympic champion? I wouldn't mind Qiu taking both titles. If she can manage to upgrade her vault to a DTY, she can be a dangerous All Arounder in the next quad. Hoping the Paseka training paid off. Lastly, does China have a chance challenging USA for gold? If they are able to upgrade their vaults, it brings up their team score by 1.5-3 points. They can bring high 14 bars (whichever of Qiu, Zhang, Huang, Du goes) and potentially have 15 beams (Zhou and Qiu, Ou Yushan can be the third beamer because she's consistent as fuck), whilst having mid 13s on floor. They need like a Wang Yan-sort of gymnast - Zhang Jin usually fills that spot but she has low difficulty right now

Well if we think about it number wise, USA can go 14.5 ish average on vault, 14.7 average bars, 14 average beam, 14 average floor, that puts them at 171.6 but they can realistically get to 172. Assuming china has the best meet of their life and hit all routines with 2 dty’s and ZhangQingying having a Rudi they can average like 13.9 vault, 14.8 bars, 15 beam, and 13.5 floor, that puts them also at 171.6 meaning they could mathematically challenge USA if they hit

@@gymnastiq These assumptions are also would I would describe as realistic-best-case for the US. Especially the 14.7 average bars. Again, realistic, but only if everything goes right, everyone capable of the high bars scores stays healthy, etc.

Re: Qiu Qiyuan's Landing Position on the Arabian I believe that this would only be a 0.1 deduction because the hips are at knee level. Only when the hips are below knee level does the deduction increase from 0.10 to 0.30.

Just wanted to mention that the artistry deductions from last worlds were leaked, and Qiu was given 0.36 off in artistry deductions at both of her beam routines, and with almost universal agreemnt across all 14 judges (7 judges times two routines) on 0.3 or 0.4 off. It is nearly impossible to get less than 0.2 off on artistry on beam. If you round to the nearest tenth, only one gymnast in all of worlds averaged 0.1 off on artistry--Eythora. (Pauline's qulaifications routine also averaged 0.1 off but her other routines had more deductions), and only 8 averaged 0.2 off, everyone else averaged 0.3 or more. Point being that even if this checks the artistry boxes better than worlds, 0.1 is still probably significantly too low on artistry deductions.

Good job. I do think that a few of the deductions you took could've went past the judges because of the angle. She is improving each and every competition. I'm so excited for her to hit and claim BB and UB gold in Paris!

can you do it with bars too? and btw i agree with you, the only thing i would add is some deductions on artistry. idk how they work but based on worlds scores i think she would get around 0.2 deductions….

Yeah, most gymnasts apart from Pauline Schaefer got more than 0.1 in artistry deductions. I think that they'd also take off because she doesn't have much movement through her core. So, maybe an 8.1 E? I'm also not sure if she'd get credit for all of those connections. It's a great BB routine, and this is the DTB Pokal Challenge Cup, so the judging isn't going to be as strict anyway.

@@asharadayne6159 Pauline's quals routine got around 0.1 in artistry deductions, but her other routines were more like 0.25. Eythora was the only gymnast to average 0.1--she averaged only HALF a tenth in quals, and 0.1 in her other two routines!

I love comparing my scores to others out there. Although I had a few deductions different than you, I landed at 15.266 prior to seeing your assessment. I think it's pretty cool that we ended up less than a tenth different. Although, they were ruthless in Tokyo.

@@BaraXXXanova666 Givng ranges in same cases--ie some judges would take that, others wouldn't, so we'll say 0 - 1 tenth. Or some would give that a 0.1 squat others a 0.3, so it's 0.1 - 0.3 squat. Then you count up and average the lows and highs of your ranges. That said, I think 15.266 is still a little generous.

@@erinm9445 yes I get that. I’m just really bugged with people saying “I landed at..” or “I would give this a..” and then gives a score that’s impossible for a single judge to give. Either it’s a 15.200 or a 15.300 in this case. I know it’s not a hill to die on but it just bugs me. Especially in NCAA when people be “This was not a ten!! I would’ve had this at 9.975” when you literally can’t do that. 🙃

It was a phenomenal routine, huge difficulty, overall fairly solid. However, 15.5 is too high, but I do think 15-15.2 is more fair for this routine.

I'm not necessarily opposed to this being an 8.5 -- like some of your deductions are a tad harsh (that switch ring was epic!) -- I'm just annoyed that what inevitably happens is some other gymnast's super clean, simpler routine without a single balance check will also end up scoring low 8 E score at the same meet just because.

I think actually the jumps/leaps other than the switch 1/2 would be fine (i.e. no body shape deductions), it's because of the camera angle, there's a vid of someone filming from the side and looks like she hit 180 split on all of them

First off I want to say I LOVE Qiu Qiyuan on beam and have been a fan for years now. Also, nobody constructs a high-D beam routine like the Chinese. They have it down to a mathematical certainty - building routines that will gain maximum difficulty. However, watching this angle on this routine, she seems quite wobbly and unsure throughout. It looks as though there are many elements in the routine that she had only recently added, and she was not confident in them. Not even necessarily her fault, as I'm sure the Chinese coaching staff push the athletes to maximize scores re: what I said earlier about the D-scores. Still love her!

Im not very knowledgeable with the gymnastics scoring procedure but are the judges scoresheet are available to the public? In other disciplines the scoresheet is available without the judges names so you can have a feel is the judging panel sucks lets be real a lot of these judges are not giving fair scores including the olympiad.

Nope. Gymnastics is stuck in the dark ages unfortunately. Sometimes the scorebook gets leaked--it did for last worlds. It gives the E and artistry deductions by judge, but you still don't know what they're taking off for or anything. Those books, when leaked, aren't anonymous by judge, interestingly, you can see who from which country gave what.

Her mount combination isn't efficient. With the 0.1 CV it's only worth E, same as the LOSO mount which she could probably do but which has less deductio potential. Linking the BHS mount into a LOSO for 0.2 CV is much more worthwhile, adding a second LOSO gets another 0.2 in CV/SB. Otherwise doing her switch leap series as a mount is also more worthwhile and adds 0.2 in base value and CV.

The judges in Cat 4 events like this are more lenient. Yes, Arabian is a 3-tenth squat and artistry will be applied up to 0.3-0.4.

Simone is hands down the current best, people saying she is not as artisitc, is just blatently wrong, and NOT because of her skin! I think this girl was a tad overrated yes, but I'm not an expert. Het switch ring is perfect. I saw a video from the side of beam. Also somebody in the comment are so mean about the artistry. She is very artistic to me. I don’t think the artistry deduction is a good thing, because it is way to subjective. Some European gymnastics with little deduction they do have very much choreography but those choreography are not beautiful or the way they dance are not beautiful.
