I wouldn't say he was less loved but left out in a way. Bill is the oldest, Charlie is the dragon tamer, Percy is smart, the twins are twins or the joker's, Ginny is the girl, and Ron is what? Friends with Harry.

I think that was the only significant factor for Ron. The fact that not only is he the same age as Harry, but he was also lucky enough to befriend him on the train. And in some ways, he shines the most just by being Harry's friend.

I think Molly should notice Ron a bit more and leave Ginny alone a bit more. Ginny is independent and as for Ronald, he never was much dependent cause he never got to be. Molly, stop spoiling your daughter cause she wants to be free and notice your son cause he wants attention.

Yea. I thought it was actually kind of sweet when Percy reached out to Ron even though the letter was worded poorly. Neither of them had ever gotten to be the "favourite brother" before. I get the feeling Bill and Charlie were close due to being close in age and both a little out there. Percy had almost the same problem as Ron most likely, which could explain his pompous proud attitude. He decided he was going to have to work harder than everyone else if he wanted to be noticed. He seems to like his mother best of everyone in the family which suggests that his brothers were too busy supporting each other and because his personality was different he didn't fit in with them. So when Ron got made prefect he saw something of himself in Ron and wanted to be Ron's favourite brother. Which didn't end up working out because Ron had Harry for a stand in brother. But he WAS trying to make an effort to connect with him and this was at a time when he wanted nothing to do with most family members. It's a shame they didn't get to develop a friendship because Percy was so disapproving of Ron's friends. It really is, they could have had a great relationship.

That's why I think Ron was ecstatic that his firstborn was a girl because I think he thought that if he has a girl first, then his wife (Hermonie) would be happy. Not saying that all women want girls but you get the point. And I think Ron was alright with his secondborn being a boy because that means they now have a boy and a girl and they could end there, although I believe if Hugo had been a girl, Ron would still end there, because he doesn't want his children to live the life he had.

The stuff from the locket was rather messed up if you think about it especially the wanting a daughter part. Imagine thinking that you were a disappointment from the very start because you were not what your parents wanted. Now imagine that thought manifest at one year old with a new baby girl, also imagine carrying that thought throughout your childhood, adding on a lot of trauma caused by other members eg. Ron’s arachnophobia by the twins, that acid pop and unbeatable vow thing. Overall Ron took it all rather well, unhealthily mind you, but well. Well enough to defend his family when they needs it, without compromising his principles.

there are times when the weasley family poverty stops making sense: 1. not buying ron a wand. wands are practically as vital as arms in the wizarding world and to go into one with a wand that was not only someone elses, but clearly dysfunctional to the point of replacement places him at a significant disadvantage. that, i believe, is slightly more important than buying a pet for percy. 2. the robes. i never understood why ginny got dress robes for the yule ball when she wasn’t even guaranteed to go since the age limit was a year above her own. 3. the maroon sweaters. not only is it strange that molly completely disregards rons feelings for maroon, he is also the only one without embroidery on his sweater. let us keep in mind that molly uses these sweaters to show her love and effort towards its recievers. and now tell me why even harry gets embroidered sweaters yet ron does not. mollys love of maroon cannot excuse this. perhaps i have misread harry potter for several years but i stand by that whether for character or for plot, ron was intentionally placed at a lower financial and familial standpoint than the other weasleys.

maybe it’s because with Charlie, Bill and Percy, they were the first three siblings so Molly didn’t care they were all boys. She then probably would have wanted a girl but then she had twins and probably wouldn’t have cared what gender they were. Then she tried again for another girl and got Ron, so she still wanted a girl and finally got one with Ginny. She loved Charlie Bill and Percy because she didn’t care what gender they were at that point She loved Fred and George because they were twins and reminded her of her brothers She loved Ginny cause she was a girl And ron was just there

I honestly never understood what molly was thinking when she bought Ron his yule ball outfit. Even though I’m absolutely positive that molly truly does love and care for him even I began to think that she didn’t love him THAT much if she could force him to wear such a hideous outfit. I mean I know their hard on money but if you could buy Ginny a decent dress then why not buy a used but still decent looking robes. No matter how you look at it it was just cruel to put Ron through that. I honestly want to know what was going through Molly’s head when she bought it.

Also it mentions later in the book that Ron attempts to alter it by cutting off the frills but couldn't smooth it out. I guarantee you Molly could have at least cut off those ugly frills for him and made it a bit more presentable! Being poor doesn't mean you humiliate your children. I also don't get why the Weasley's are so poor besides plot device. Arthur works in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, I think at one point they mention he's the Head of it. What does he do there? HE STOPS WIZARDS FROM EXPOSING MAGIC YOU EFFING MORONS! Apparently wizards think it's funny to expose wizardkind every time they want to play a pranks. Arthur has one of the moat important jobs in the Ministry and they look down on him because his title has 'muggle' in it. Clearly the Statue of Secrecy isn't as important as everyone says it is.

@@trinityfranklin8356 I don't think the Weasleys' poverty was merely a plot device. I makes sense within the world. I agree it seems weird Arthur isn't getting more for being the head of one of the most important jobs in the Ministry, but you have to remember this Ministry is prejudiced against Muggles and isn't likely to see the value in what Arthur does, and by extension how important managing the misuse of Muggle artifacts really is, which is indeed the furthest thing from fair. I genuinely think the people in power cheated Arthur out of money he deserved.

You are so right. Ron was always mistreated, maybe not intentionally, but enough so that you wonder if it can only be deliberate. In the seventh book, during the locket scene, you can really feel for Ron when his fears come out and although it was a subtle theme throughout the books, it made sense. His greatest desire is to be the best of them all because he feels as though people think he’s not enough. Especially Hermione and his family. And I’m sure Molly’s continuous doting on Harry didn’t help that viewpoint. I never really liked Molly, mostly because she seemed to think she was always right and always tried to push that onto others. In the 5th book, she tried to be controlling of everything, what the kids heard, how much they knew. I found her to be such a know it all, and the way she dismissed Sirius annoyed me so much. And the perfect badge scene. I really hated it, because everyone expected Harry to get it, including Fred, George, Hermione and Harry. No one believed Ron deserved it. Even Dumbledore admitted Ron only got it because he didn’t want to put more responsibility on Harry. I mean, does anyone think Ron deserves nice things? And Molly was suddenly all coddling and proud, dismissing the twins by saying that was everyone in the family. She was really cruel and I’m glad Ron ends up with the one he loved, he deserved it after all the crap he was put through all his life.

Molly took her parenting for granted in the fact that she got comfortable in the way she raised her family, since she was the mother, she would often just brush it aside when her children voiced how they felt & often have the attitude of ‘That’s my decision - get over it’ rather than trying to acknowledge & understand her children’s feelings. Percy rejecting his family (while horrible) may have actually humbled Molly somewhat in discovering her parenting had flaws & that her lack of listening played a major part in the result with Percy. I do think it was selfish of her to keep having kids after the twins as wanting a girl or boy is a sign of favouritism no matter how you look at it - if she got a girl sooner after say the first 2 or 3 kids, would she have still ended up with 7 in the end? The more kids you have, the harder it will become to give them equal amounts of time & support & connect with them emotionally.

Both my paternal grandfather and now late maternal grandmother had similar issues in their childhood. My grandfather's mother *desperately* wanted a girl (but never got one, stopping at 3 boys), and thus my granddad was pretty much neglected in his youth, always being handed to aunts, plus his two elder brothers were a good decade older than him; whilst my grandmother's parents had four girls before getting the boy they craved and then stopping at six children. My nan was child number 4 (last girl) and was just pretty much the "there" child like Ron whilst her two younger brothers were mollycoddled, and her three elder sisters were again a good decade elder.

If Hermione kept Harry alive, Ron kept Harry sane. Harry was *miserable* without Ron in GoF and DH and when they reconciled, he was a lot more relaxed and cheerful. Ron mattered so much to Harry that, the latter grew anxious about what his best friend’s reaction would be towards his growing feelings for his sister. Ron was the one who begged a merciless psychopath to torture him instead of the girl he loved. Ron was the one who was confronted by his biggest insecurities in front of his best friend by the horcrux in the locket- yet managed to overcome his fears and destroyed the horcrux ( considering how hard it can be to pull away from the effects of a horcrux.) In simpler words: *Weasley is our king!*

What I find amazing about Ron is that despite his siblings achieving so much and doing so much. Not a single one of them have proven the level of bravery, loyalty and selflessness that Ron is capable of. He provided Harry with the one thing he needed more than anything. A family. That is worth more to Harry than any amount of gold. So its fair to say that although his brothers and sister seemed to have more attention than Ron, they never had a the raw, genuine and unconditional friendship that he shared with Harry and Hermione. And thats an achievement you cannot put a price on.

Ron also achieved the most - special award for services to the school, prefect, quidditch team, winning the cup, his best friend is the boy who lived, helped Harry win the triwizard cup, helped save ginny, went after quirell, impressed Dumbledore with his chess skills, inherited a rare magical invention from Dumbledore himself, exam success, married the future minister for magic, briefly worked as an auror, fought deatheaters when he was barely 16... Ginny is impressive too, but Ron ends up their most impressive son.

I personally don't like Molly because honestly she treats Ginny better than Ron. We can see that with their yule ball ouftits, Ron gets an ugly cloak which looks like a dress, while Ginny gets a dress of good quality. Ron doesn't get to choose him own wand, but a second hand one. I think Ginny got her own wand. The question is: It is ok to treat Ron and Ginny differently because Ginny is a girl? Of course it's not.

While it's true that Ginny got a new wand and Ron didn't, the dress robes situation probably can't really be counted as an incident of neglect. Molly was shopping at a second hand store, where it's likely much easier to find decent-looking women's clothes than it is to get men's, so Molly probably got Ginny's robes at the same store she got Ron's - Ron's just happened to look pretty bad because the men's section only had bad robes.

On top of that Molly found it more important to get Percy a New Owl for becoming a Prefect than spending that Money on Ron. Sure Ron got a new Broom when he pecame a Prefect BUT at that Time all the Children hat the Basic Necasseties because Wands and Cauldorns are pretty much the most Expansive Parts. So there was less Money to be spend. But back than Ron NEEDED a own Wand. The Fact that he was able to cast anithing at all ESPECLEY that Wingardium Levioza Spell on the Trolls Club shows that he is acually quite the Powerfull and Talented Wizard. I think these sentiments passed into Ron's head at those low points but I doubt they characterize his overall feeling towards his parents, he knows Molly loves him despite her overbearing nature, he appreciates how hard his father works and how Arthur's stance on muggles singles him out for scorn at work and in wider wizarding society

I think this is really good but I have some other thoughts too, I think that it's because of the point in time we see Ron that it looks even worse for him - I don't mean about the money issues, and how when it came to Ron they couldn't afford the same as what some of his brothers were given, that's not totally their fault. I mean that Ron's brothers probably did also get some of the same treatment as him - but we don't see it. Ron feels left out because Bill and Charie and Percy are all getting praised and spoken highly of for their achievements, but at the start of it he's just a first year. When they were his age, it wouldn't have been that way, obviously Ron never sees this and obviously they're all above him, but that's because he's a kid and they have years on him - I think a lot of it is his perspective and fading into the background because he wasnt born early enough to compete on a fair playing field. That sort of thing can't be helped, since he will always be playing catch up - except to Ginny, who doesn't even have to compete since she's special being the only daughter. I think he also constantly under values himself. He thinks hermione is wicked smart and Harry is a great wizard (both true) but he's always doling out tidbits of info, more like street knowledge and wizarding world stuff the others don't know, but because to him it's normal, he doesn't see how valuable he is even to his friends. I think he overooks his own strengths and achievements and probably doesn't play them up in front of his parents (like Percy flaunting his prefect badge, or the twins always taking attention with their mischief). I think Molly probably does just genuinely forget some things sometimes - with so many kids she probably really does forget what sandwiches Ron doesn't like - she probably cooks so many different things for them that some things she's bound to forget. I think that what you said about ron as a baby/toddler is also really insightful, and I really appreciate the view of bringing her grief and then being quickly pregnant again, I think with her having older children Ron probably had some of his upbringing from them, and then with babying Ginny, molly probably was a little more used to her older kids looking out for the younger ones and being able to help out a bit, she probably assumed he had all he needed while she focused attention elsewhere.

It isn't that she doesn't pay heed to complaints... In the Prisoner of Azkaban (if I remember correctly), when Molly was handing out tiffins to the children, Ron was just about to complain, when Molly said him not to worry, as they weren't corned beef. Nope!! Ron should've died instead of fred!!!....as far as his relationship with hermione, well to me that is real simple. Hermione is an alpha female boss!! No doubt about it!! I refer to her as "miss bossy britches ' she and harry would probably never work because harry is definitely an alpha male boss also.and hermione hates being challanged on any level so she went for ron, who is most definitely a beta male follower! I think it’s all rooted down that in comparison with his siblings including Ginny; Ron had the least impressive of magical talents. His first three brothers were studious and talented wizards, Bill with curses and hexes, Charlie with Animals and Percy being the more book smart of the three, then there’s Fred and George, each was a talented magical inventor like their father and they excelled in charms, transfigurations and potions collectively. They showed such an aptitude for such a young age. It could be argued that their magical versatility made them far more talented than their older siblings. Then there’s Ginny who has a proficiency with spells in general whilst being a great flyer too. Ron though originally a great strategist suffered from average gifts in a family where talent was bursting he was the runt of the litter and wasn’t really motivated all that much as the books progressed. It’s both wasted potential and an underdeveloped character.... Plus parents kind of give up after kid number three and it becomes less important to pay attention because they have bitten more than they can chew. It’s the perfect example of the impoverished life style of having too many kids and not knowing what to do with them. It’s a sad fact of life and a very realistic take on some family dynamics

Let me add a different perspective. I'm a dad and I love my two kids equally, but I have more in common with my son than I do my daughter. For example, my son and I love gaming and total Potter heads. This isn't to say that our family is segregated it just means that my daughter would rather have her mom take her shopping than me. I have only two children because of economics. Also, I was born the second child of 5. Before my little brothers came along my older sister and I got more attention and resources. My parents really couldn't afford 5 children and by the time my youngest brother came along there wasn't as much time and resources to go around. My brothers mostly got my hand me downs and, being the oldest son I got a lot more attention from my parents when I was younger than my younger siblings. There was just more of both when I was little. There are just so many hours in a day and a limited amount of money. What I'm saying is that I can see a lot of my own mother in Mrs. Weasley. Sure, economics should have been a consideration when the Weasley's decided to start a family, but I don't see Mrs. Weasley as being neglectful or uncaring of Ron. I see a woman running a household on limited resources doing the best she can. Let me also add that in a house full of boys the mother is more likely to dote more on the only daughter than any of the sons. That's not to say I cannot empathize with Ron's plight because I do. I just don't think it's that big of a problem. I think a lot of kids who grow up in a poor household understand their family's financial struggles more than most think. That's my two cents for what it's worth.

Molly was so desperate to get Ginny on board they she left Harry and Ron alone at King’s Cross. If she had told Arthur to go after the boys, he would’ve been there when they got blocked by Dobby. She basically allowed two 12-year old boys to be stranded in a muggle filled train station, which led to them taking the flying car to school. Sending Ron the howler made it clear that Molly had no regard for his safety, and I’m honestly surprised Ron turned out as well as he did. The fact that he still became great despite all he went through at the hands of his mother makes him one of my favourite characters in the whole series!

The worst treated is Percy, who was mocked every move he made. Ron is simply the symptom of HAVING TOO MANY KIDS and simply the basic science of NOT HAVING ENOUGH TIME FOR ALL OF THEM! I was one of 7 (granted adopted so a different situation) so have first hand experience. There's never enough time once you hit a certain number, it just becomes neglectful at some time. Not hardcore neglect, but a bit neglectful.

I personally think that Percy was the worst treated Weasley. I mean he had the same problems as Ron did. Bill and Charlie had each other, Fred and George were inseparable and Ginny was probably with Molly. But Percy also seemed to be the laughing stock because he didn't belong and there are some theories that Percy's letter in the 5th book may have been in code. He had a pompous attitude but that may have been to try and stand out Back to Percy being a laughed at a lot. I never saw any of the other Weasleys get teased as badly as Percy. Fred and George picked on him and the others just laughed along. Thus causing a rift between him and the twins. Molly didn't really ever punish them for pranking people. (Don't get me wrong. I love Fred and George. But even they have flaws. Just like Percy.) Also when he left his family. Some take this as betrayal and therefore he is a pompous git. He has acted like that yes, but he proved himself when he helped in the Battle of Hogwarts. Also when Percy left the family he was like 19-20ish. Honestly who DOESN'T make mistakes at that age? People makes mistakes and Percy did something not many people can do. He confessed that he made a serious mistake and owned up to it. That is one of the hardest things someone can do

Thank you for this video :) I've been sure of this since I first read books years ago, and I'm really glad I'm not the only one. It's a big crack on perfect Weasley family, because it's important to be loved, but it's even more important to feel this love. Molly might love him, but he never really felt it. And you know what, the fact that none of Weasley sibilings had more that three children (and Bill and Ginny, first boy and first girl in the family, being the only ones to have that much) speaks a lot about that. I hope that deep down all of them feels how bad it is when parents don't have enough time for their children. Not love, but time and attention, because it's as much important as love itself. You could love your children, but if they don't feel that, it might be as hurtful as not loving them.

@@ashleetyler429 I agree, but sometimes she was bad at showing it. Like during Christmas when he would get maroon sweaters despite him hating maroon. I'm pretty sure everyone else in the family didn't, so why even though he hates the color. Also, the dress robes Molly gave him were hideous. Ginny's dress looked good and Harry's dress robes also look good so why did she decide to give Ron those hideous dress robes. There are some other things Molly also did that were kind of cruel.

I don't think Ginny needed to be so left out. She was a great practitioner, and could've added value as a fourth member of Harry's circle. In the Chamber of Secrets, she had as much of an initiation-by-fire as Harry had a year earlier in the Philosopher's Stone. Once Harry, Ron, and Hermione made the arbitrary decision at the beginning of Prisoner of Azkaban not to include Ginny, she was left out of the ongoing experience and continuously fell further behind.

Ron was like a younger, dumber, less-accomplished version of Percy. Percy: becomes prefect & Head-Boy, is a Model Student at Hogwarts, has a successfull Ministry Career and yet is largely neglected by his Parents when compared to his siblings. Ron: is an Idiot, Lousy Student, still becomes Prefect, is the youngest son in the Weasley family but is largely neglected by his parents. Percy had the pressure of not only living up to his Older brothers' standards but to also to be a role-model for his younger siblings. Ron however had to compete against his 5 older brothers and also be a role-model for his younger sister. But later into the series, Ron tends to compete with Ginny as much as he competed with his older siblings.

@Grass I think you're ignoring the fact that Ron's insecurities were direct repercussions of his upbringing. If Ron had been an only child, or further up the sibling age range (like Charlie), he likely wouldn't have been so insecure. Being insecure is not a born flaw in someone's personality; it's something that develops over time due to how someone is treated. People develop insecurities from how the world interacts with them (hence why Hermione is insecure of her status in the magical world, and why Harry isn't used to people caring about him). Ron isn't insecure because he was born that way; he is insecure because -over time- he began to believe that his parents and siblings cared about him the least.

I can relate to Ron so much and I think he is one of my favourite of Harry Potter franchise. I also have a very low self-esteem and a fear of not being loved and not being accepted for I am and not what I am suppose to be even though I was and I am loved by my father and stepmother. I am almost 30 year old and just began to learn to live by myself due to difficulties I have. I think Molly did wrong. Not matter how many children you have, listen and love them equally and try to rise their self-esteem, let them make their own path and accept who they are instead of trying to mold them what you want them to be.

Ron's birth position was never a hindrance to him. Yes. His mother didn't listen to him as much as she could have. Yes. He was given a lot of hand-me-downs(scabbers included) that were not in the best of conditions. He chose to build his character and not dwell on material things. Did Ginny's birth(as the only daughter) have any adverse effects on him no. What would have surely impacted Ronald Weasley was if the child born just after him had been a boy. In the magical world being the 7th son is very powerful. It would have been a status symbol for the family having already been branded blood traitors or not. Had Ginny been born a boy all attention and love would have been lavished on that child Ron would grow to resent it and very well could have joined slytherin as the first Weasley to ever do so. Was he the least loved? No. This family as it stands was full of so much love. Was he the most neglected? No. None of the children were. They were all provided for within the means of the family. Was he the most overlooked? Yes. His brothers all had paths they were taking with great strides. His sister was his only sister. He had some far better for. The freedom to be whoever he wanted to be without the full pressure of expectations placed on him by anyone but himself.

The robes and stuff are neither here nor there but the hand-me-down wand was absolutely UNFORGIVABLE. Especially given the combination of Unicorn hair and Ash tree which means the wand is fanatically loyal to it's original owner and Unicorn hair as a core gets drained thus weakening the wand. This actually shows that Ron even at a very young age was very skilled I mean he was able to use a wand which wasn't truly loyal to him and was drained of its powers.
