A lot of problems in 4 could have been avoided had there been a option to turn Rage off in the game settings. At least the game had Smash 4 Marth, which as Leo showed, was such a cool character to watch and play

Nah smash 4 Marth was pretty silly too. Side B was frame 6, already making it better than most characters dash attacks. Jab combos were more free than America. Down throw up air 50/50s, side B kills or 50/50s, jab to hope, fthrow combos corner carried into easy ledge traps, if you're feeling crazy Marth was one of the few characters that could actually go off stage and edge guard. The last point of this video really rings true. Smash 4 brought so many people into the scene, and Smash really boomed with its release. Before Smash 4, no Smash tournament ever broke 1000 players. Brawl never even broke 500 players. The great scene we have today for Ultimate is largely due to the work people did in the Smash 4 days.

Hot Take: Smash 4 is my personal fav smash game. The color choice really made the characters pop and it opened the doors to so many great things. Custom moves are such a great idea (though a pain to unlock and a bit flawed in making them equally viable) and Bayo was so much fun to play. It was like having a Marvel Character in Smash. That being said, they murdered the hell out of my boy DDD. Good thing Ryu and Bayo existed.

Commenting to say that the two things I'm most upset about in Ultimate are: 1) Smash 4 Mii Gunner not being around anymore. Gunner (especially tiny Gunner) was my jam. You could have two missiles out at once and they travelled at a snail's pace, lasted forever, and turned on a dime. Grenade Launch was amazing. Bomb Drop _exploded_ when you attacked it instead of getting reflected. FAir was an actual button. Down Smash was super cool. Not to mention you had cool costumes like the Steampunk Outfit (which is still in Ultimate but is just worse) and the Mage Outfit (which is _gone_ in Ultimate, for some reason???) I still main Gunner in Ult but the movement nerfs and FAir/Grenade Launch being practically removed is super painful. I'm stuck playing a passive, campy character instead of a character who can aggressively pressure the foe from just outside their reach, chasing them around and putting projectiles on them. 2) Ultimate's input buffer. God, can we just have like, a 6 frame version of the Brawl buffer? Much better than Ult's absolutely nonsensical input priority system that requires you to remember an entire chart just to control your character.

Competitively Smash 4 is more balanced but it lacks a lot of the unique character mechanics that Brawl had that kind of made up for it.
