Her uncle didn’t care about legacy, he held her music back from streaming because he didn’t see how HE could earn a profit off licensing the background artists out. Also he was bankrupt-not just morally, but financially-and Jomo is also just as bad. Her mother was the one who was more focused on legacy, but she also for some reason didn’t want the public to have access to it. Her brother Rashad is the only person who should be in control of his sisters estate and music tbh. This was such a good reminder of what a chaotic mess this movie was. I hope Alexandra Shipp is somewhere at peace cause the way they dogged her for this and Storm was overkill. Great video as always

This movie was ASS idc idc, the girl they casted to play her wasn’t good, now everytime I see her in something I’m just reminded of this movie (her face just annoys me sorry idk), they couldn’t use any of Aaliyah’s music so they only used covers, the r kelly stuff was weird bc they don’t explore it, they just put rkelly in it without illustrating how predatory he was, they frame it as some unrequited love story which is weird, and it’s not written well in a way where you can view it from a 15 yr old girls perspective for it to make sense and the way Aaliyahs portrayed is very one note, very boring, I’ll never forget when Wendy Williams talked about this movie and was like “my favorite song is let me know, whats your favorite Aaliyah song 😀” and everyone was on her ASS 😭

It's a bit of a paradox for me because I think Zendaya is where she is now (not accounting for luck) because she has great judgement when it comes to picking projects. It's hard to imagine what would be if she did the movie because it was so obvious it was going to be bad, if she had done it, I would assume she would have carried that same bad judgement into other bad projects.

She rubbed a lot of black people the wrong way, I think if she kept going for “black” roles, she wouldn’t have been getting casted as much as she is now. She should’ve known with the Aaliyah backlash that her trying to play Storm, a dark skinned African woman, was not going to be a good look on her. Especially with that terrible accent she did.

Aaliyah's career wasn't centered around her race like Nina Simone's . Any Mono racial black and or bi racial could have played Aaliyah. The problem was neither Zendaya or Alexandria looked or acted anything like Aaliyah. Just because they were both light skinned like Aaliyah doesn't mean they were right to play her. Yes... it was THAT bad. None of Aaliyah's music, horrible casting decisions, low production values, Wendy's involvement and subsequent running of her mouth... this movie was doomed to fail and rightfully so. There's a reason Teyana Taylor dropped out of the movie too. She was in talks but pulled out because she's a true fan and understood the bigger picture that Zendaya (initially) and Alexandra seemed to be ignorant to.

I’ve never seen anyone with as much potential as Aaliyah had. She had so much charisma. She really was about to take over the world, but it’s kinda cheap ito have her say it in a biopic right before she passes away. Anyway, Aaliyah had an air of mystery and kindness about her. Sorry, this is the first comment I’ve written about her, so it’s all coming out 😭. It was bittersweet watching the video for Rock the Boat cause it was amazing. I was too young to appreciate Selena before she died. But I saw the rise of Aaliyah, and I can tell why she’s still remembered so fondly. About biopics? Maybe there are two or three good ones, tops.

I'm a HUGE Aaliyah fan. The movie was TERRIBLE. Her legacy wasn't shown properly in the movie. I also felt like the movie was more focused on her and R kelly (in my opinion). She needs a PROPER biopic.🕊❤

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Selena and La Bamba were the best ever music biopics... ever!! And they were theatrically released! These producers should take notes. I feel bad for Alexandra. It took time for her to dig outta that hole. Wendy should be ashamed.

I wonder if Zendaya has nightmares about what could’ve been lmaoooo I know I would. I don’t think she would’ve bounced back from this film too quick truthfully lol. Wendy Williams producing was the hugest red flag 🤣🤣🤣. This movie had been in the works for years longer than Wendy was actually apart of it. B Simone was in talks to play Aaliyah years ago. The casting was so atrocious none of the actors looked like who they depicted. Especially R.Kelly and Missy Elliot 😂😂😂. Lifetime is great a dramatic movies but biopics they need to chill.

I have a very vivid memory from elementary school. The week after Aaliyah died, we did a kind of memorial for here on one of the walls near the administrative office. There were pictures of her and like notes that some of us wrote about how much we loved her music. I think that’s when I was first learned about the concept death. I remember some of my teachers explaining it pretty well. Well enough for kids to understand anyway.

The mere fact that they moved on with the biopic without the family's approval is weird and disrespectful in and of itself. How are you going to tell a story about someone and have everyone close enough to her to tell it right and factually out of it and not on board? At that point, it is really just being told based off of what the public already knows and when it comes to that there's a lot of inaccuracy and just downright wrong facts because the media often spreads misinformation. Them not even having her music playing in it was the cherry on top. There's also a disconnect between the way they chose to portray Aaliyah and how she came across in interviews, I feel like although the actress....tried she could have studied her more and the way she chose to answer questions. Aaliyah had a quiet confidence and an air of mystery about her and when you try to portray someone like that without the people who knew her closely to guide you it's set up to fail lmaoo. I'm not a huge fan of biopics anyway because they are very rarely done right.

I know the family wanted a big production for her legacy but also! Something tells me since after all that came about from R Kelly, they probably don't even want to touch on the topic of their relationship. Being in their minds like should we? Or how would the audience treat it? Mad because they did or happy because they didn't include it. If they did it could be VERY minimal and just show the workings of her career and not the relationship. Because he obviously started her career. IDK So we may never get a movie TBH but, who knows maybe another 10 years from now. She needs to be celebrated more! I don't think they really had any tributes for her on any awards shows either!?....

I feel like if the artist themselves said that they don’t want anyone to make a biopic about them before they passed or if they pick out a specific person to play them then that should be respected. For instance with the Aretha Franklin movie a lot of people were mad about Jennifer Hudson playing the role but it had been said well before Aretha passed away that she had already pick Jennifer to play her and even after that the one with Jennifer in it was the only one that had the support of the family.
