Around 7 minutes in when discussing the laughter I think you got this very wrong. It wasn't the leaders laughing, it was the science advisors, and I don't think they were laughing at death. These were people desperately trying to explain science to people who just didn't understand it with lives on the line. They must have been losing their minds trying desperately to educate leaders. If I imagine myself in that position I would spend all day thinking that I might save thousands or even hundreds of thousands of lives if only they could find the right way to explain the facts. Then to find out that you aren't alone in those feelings must have been quite cathartic.

I thought the same thing. I recognize the situation from my own profession. Although I don't have to worry about life or death, but working in a position where elected officials make the final decisions can be quite stressful and sometimes I wonder if it's a me problem when they don't listen to me. Then I meet with colleaugues and they have the exact same problem and that is both catharthic and exasperating at the same time. I can imagine that situation resulting in laughter and don't blame anyone for it.

Exactly. I’m in Austria and our health minister always warned about how we must not “get into exponential growth”, which is bullshit because the virus is always spreading exponentially if R>1. So the people in charge really fundamentally didn’t understand what was going on, and that must have been incredible frustrating

It's rich of the MP's to say those who can work should work when we see and hear about MP's clocking in but not being in the Commons, some not showing up for over a year despite receiving a full MP paycheck, when they do show up they don't participate at all... basically being paid and NOT working!

Thank you PSUK for speaking up for disabled folk. The idea that a disability is just a minor inconvenience which can be "switched off" for the purposes of work is cartoonishly ludicrous. Complicated chronic conditions impair mobility, obvs, but we never hear of any gov't plans to address these, do we? Just another punishment plan...

I think Coco has grasped the wrong end of the science advisors sharing a laugh over leaders struggling with exponential growth. It isn’t them being casual, it’s more likely a response akin to tension release when your shit boss is ensuring that work is going to be fucking awful. Common in lousy workplaces the world over.

The Trussell Trust is doing good work (& also should not exist - completely agree with Coco about those pics of MPs opening new food banks). However, it is also a religious-based organisation, founded on 'Christian' principles. Now they *might* never let that get in the way of them helping everyone they can, but we have evidence, largely from the US, that leaving too much charity to religious groups can lead to discrimination when they are called upon to help people they don't agree with. So I prefer to give to Fare Share, an offshoot of Crisis, which so far seems to have no religious aspect.

The mental gymnastics trying to squeeze a cigarette paper between the meaning of a ceasefire (a temporary cessation of hostilities) and a humanitarian pause in fighting (temporary cessation of hostilities) is mind blowingly semantic and pedantic in equal measures. I am so glad that the Beveridge report was discussed. There is a need to hold government accountable for their lack of investment in these systems and the civil servants that make them possible. It is utterly disgusting that while creating a somewhat proactive scheme for disabled individuals to acquire work the government is also enacting a reactive punishment for people who do not 'obey'. Yet another way for the government to ultimately pass the blame onto the person and not the system if the scheme ultimately fails with certain disabled individuals.

I keep trying with pod save the UK but I don’t like the hyper giggly style. I wish they had found at least someone with some government insider knowledge. Uk media is already stuffed with comedians entertainingly shittalking the government. What I like about pod save America is their genuine commitment to public service and practical knowledge of the actual work.

The downside is the pod save America guys always try to make excuses for the people in power they used to work for. It’s not the same as merely having a political leaning/stance. When you have insider knowledge, chances are you are an insider and you will always protect your own. When you are friends with the politicians you’re talking about, it becomes problematic. This is much less of a problem with the uk hosts
