This woman really walked into a room after somebody shouted "black rod"...she's dressed in what basically looks to me like "Little Boy Blue in mourning" chic, carrying a fancy f*ckin stick and trailing a black man behind her who doesn't really look all that much like he wants to be there. Like WHAT IS HAPPENING OVER THERE?! 😂😂😂

Moved out....lol. More like after we were all in bed. I had f*ckin weird parents. I'm Canadian, and we're part of the commonwealth; even, this shit is weird to us. I didn't know we have a black rod as well. We still have to get the King's approval on some of our bills of parliament. Also, if you want to know more about the UK there are a number of funny shows that can help. Have I Got News For You has been going since the early 90's. The Mash Report, Frankie Boyle's New World Order, and Mock the Week have all been axed by the BBC; however, most episodes are on KZbin. QI is good for general & strange information of all kinds. 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is great if you enjoy comedy, but are a fan of math/word puzzles.Discovering British TV was the best part of the pandemic for me. Sometimes, it's just nice to know that we're all f*cked lol

The US has something similar to the black rod thing but less flamboyant. The President has to knock and be invited in to give the State of the union every year. It's the Sergeant at Arms that does it I believe. And also someone from the cabinet has to stay behind in case the capitol gets destroyed and they have to continue the government. Just as ridiculous but no one does it to the level of the UK.

I'm old enough to remember when the 11th wasn't marked at all and remembrance Sunday was the day and even then nearly everyone ignored it. It wasn't a thing, it started to become a thing again because of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And now the hysteria about it is becoming ridiculous, especially the marketisation.
@alicemerray
@alicemerray 10 ай бұрын
Agreed. Obviously, most years 11th isn't either a Sunday or a Saturday, but I have NO memory of ever stopping for a silence either at school or work (I'm now retired). Neither has my OH. It was always all about Remembrance Sunday, the nearest Sunday to 11th. Individuals or some groups may have marked the actual Armistice, and I have zero problem with that, but it was very much a choice (so is marking RS, but YKWIM). In recent days we have seen one 'newspaper' describe this coming couple of days as 'our sacred weekend', when it's nothing of the sort. I for one believe most of those who fought and died for our freedoms would be appalled by this feverish nonsense. I also wonder if charitable organisations are the ones actually benefiting from all the poppy 'merch' that exists now?
@mightyone3737
@mightyone3737 10 ай бұрын
In Canada we have Remembrance Day, which is very much not a holiday and is mostly observed by children, children that generally have no idea what war actually entails, or that most of the soldiers that died died for mindbogglingly stupid reasons, with a shocking number of dead soldiers killed over the pride of their ruler. I still have a lot of respect for soldiers (because someone has to do that job ultimately), but most wars are extremely stupid and unnecessary. At least we don't let the rich buy positions in the army (officially) anymore, in those days the average grunt knew more about tactics than the average general, yet the generals got to make all the (disastrous) decisions, most of which were blind charges against fortified positions. It got so bad that when the Light Brigade was given an openly suicidal mission (by mistake) during the Crimean War they assumed that it was just another stupid plan and actually charged. I guess some guy wrote a poem about it or something? Anyways, their is a reason a disproportionate number of soldiers throughout history did not serve willingly.
@NessNayii
@NessNayii 10 ай бұрын
Yes, I remember the time before all of this became so utterly damn shrill and fevered too. As mentioned, it was always remembrance Sunday, with no real pressure or expectation on anyone even then. Silence was not broadly observed, and certainly wasn't all but compulsory in schools and work places. I also remember that Americans were considered somewhat weird for sticking flags in their gardens and elsewhere, now we've started banging them up everywhere too. They were reserved for sandcastles and jubilee parties when I was a kid. The insincere virtue signalling that's often involved in all of this - and of course the resulting pressure exerted by it - does indeed border on hysteria, or manipulation.

War crimes cannot be ignored because otherwise we have a leader who is prepared to aid and abet war crimes depending on the person's religion and colour of skin. Which is why African countries & even Ukraine are backing Palestine. They see it as a colonial power attacking the people they have stolen land from.

what i don't understand is how a procedure where a royal official goes to a government gathering and says "the king is here, come attend to him," and then all the politicians follow the official is supposed to demonstrate that the monarchy is separate from the politicians :/ on an unrelated note, you mentioned that antisemitism was trendy in the labour party. it'd be interesting and informative to have a jewish guest go over that, and to talk about the harms such rhetoric did (and continues to do) to jewish people in real life. i'd also love an episode dedicated to the histories of the labour and tory parties in general. how they came about, how they chose their names, major scandals, etc.

You missed a couple of elements of the King's Speech performance out. The way the doors of the Commons are deliberately slammed shut at the last moment in Black Rod's face and the performatively rowdy way the MPs make their way up to the Lords chamber. It's all supposed to symbolise how the Commons is really in charge and they're going to listen to the King under protest.

Like, Im sorry "yeoman of the guard"..."golden jubilee state carriage" "THE USHER OF THE BLACK ROD"?! ARE YOU JOKING?! Bro, I get that this stuff is important to some of y'all and it has a lot of history and culture behind it, but do you hear how you sound when you talk about it? The level of seriousness some people feel about it is completely at odds with all of the terminology involved in it 😂😂

Whilst questioning the cost of maintaining the Monarchy the alternative of American Presidential elections are not the improvement needed. In spite of the wealth and the history of the UK monarchy they are restricted and not considered to have a strong influence in the world compared to the influence of the most wealthy families {Walton, Rothschild, Koch, The House of Saud, Slim, Mars, Al Nahyan, Ambani, Dumas, Wertheimer, Quandt, Cargill-MacMillan, Lee, Ortegra, Albrecht } who fund pollical parties and leaders and whose reach is largely hidden, not generally known and do affect our daily lives.

Watched some of Queen’s coffin driven through Scotland, interested to see what Scottish thought of her. One guy yelled out to Prince Andrew “you dirty old man”. He was hustled away by police. Another guy yelled out to Charles “who voted you in”. I think there was one other incident. It was funny. Following from New Zealand, love your show. About the divide between rich and poor, it’s getting worse bc of right wing policies. Unfortunately for us in New Zealand the right wing parties have got back in saying “ we will fix everything “ and dumb people voted for them. I know they’ll do what every right wing government does make the rich, richer with their ‘ trickle down theory’, only helps them. I know our Labour government was not perfect, they made mistakes and they may have over promised. At least they kept most of us alive during covid. They also had to try and fix what the previous right wing party had done, balanced the books by not spending on infrastructure. God help us and I don’t believe, only hope this right wing government will be a one term government. They haven’t got off to a great start bc they have had to bring the extreme right wing party and they are nut jobs.

Yeah, but none of this explains why black rod is so popular in American porn movies, related or unrelated? Trying to argue that people being brutally fucked over by society is a 'lifestyle choice' is a real take? That someone said out loud and on the record? It's like rich people finally admitting they want to own poor people, we all know it's true, but if we don't actually hear it we can keep on pretending otherwise.

I do have to say, without the history the entire royal getup looks like a majestically camp parody of a king's outfit from a bad 70's movie. Maybe it would be better without all the fur but at the moment I just can't look past the massive pelt and fur lined hat. They need to hire whoever dresses the Scandanavian royals, and maybe pick up some tips on how to run a functional country while they're around.

I think it looks much worse on Charles, or any man, because he looks like a character from a light opera about a tinpot Ruritanian country, or worse, like a dictator in the style of Idi Amin or Quaddafi - one of those who has awarded himself a ton of medals. The Queen, on the other hand, was basically wearing an evening dress of the type (if not the style) a lot of women still wear quite often. Not at lunchtime perhaps, but occasionally during daylight hours if the occasion calls for it. He looks like a loony, she just looked over-dressed.

I think you were right to have this guy on, & you handled it relatively well, but let’s face it, a lot of what he had to say & his opinion was utter rubbish, at one point he tried to excuse Isreal by saying what injustices had been committed in the past, American Indians, the aborigines for example, the Vietnam war, as though there was no protests against that. The left are sympathetic towards the Jihadism, most couldn’t even explain what the word mean let alone support it, they just don’t like unjustifiable mass killing, I shan’t go on, but most of the time he was talking utter bollox!

I wouldn't bank on Labour winning the next election... I don't vote myself (EU citizen with settled status) but I keep hearing from people who've been voting Labour for years in the desperate hope of unseating the Tories, and now they're saying they couldn't bring themselves to give Starmer their vote. Obviously people like this aren't going to vote Conservative, but they may stay at home, or vote Green or LibDem and split the Labour vote. And I can't blame them, because as badly as I want the Tories out, I wouldn't vote for Labour either with Starmer the helm. Let's not forget that we've had this long run of fantastically incompetent Tory governments mostly because Labour managed to lose people's trust and can't seem to know how to get it back.
