Here’s a thought: If you aren’t interested in playing web warriors, you shouldn’t have to buy the packs. They’ve done it just right. If it were the other way around, i.e every new pack has strong cards for every deck, you’d have a) a real powercreep issue and b) folks would complain that they’d have to buy packs they aren’t interested in (but they „need“ the extra cards).
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
Totally agree! I think they’ve done a great job of spreading things out overall, and for those who don’t want to buy everything I don’t know that there are too many “must have” cards out there. Of course there are always going to be people like me who have to buy everything no matter what lol. Thankfully I’m the type of person that can enjoy pretty much anyone as long as the cards are fun. But I know there are others who also feel compelled to collect it all who are less happy when the cards aren’t as generally useful. It’s always been a tricky thing with these games, trying to please everyone all at once, and I’ve always been of the opinion that they’ve done just about as well as anyone could ever expect!

@@grog3514 I would say out of all of those the one that would be most missed is Wasp. She comes with a lot of really solid staple basic cards like Ironheart ally, Spider-Man Miles Morales ally, Quincarrier, and the Power In All of Us. Beyond that there are always going to be pretty decent cards in any hero that you choose to skip, but that definitely doesn’t mean you still won’t be able to build good decks 🙂 The other thing I notice about those listed is there are a fair few Aggression heroes there, so your red pool might be a bit lacking. But again, nothing you can’t live without. The hero cards are so strong that even with a card pool that doesn’t have everything you’ll still be able to have plenty of fun, build interesting decks, and win!

It doesn't make sense from FFG's perspective to make all new packs all-new, all the time. They aren't going to lose any business from this because: - New players get cards that work for the hero they bought. - People who buy everything may be annoyed but they'll buy it anyway.

Great video! Fascinating topic. Just a note, Nightcrawler can defend himself and then use his ability on himself, so in that respect he is for everyone. EDIT: Just seen the Training cards and Game Time were covered by other comments, so I've removed this paragraphed. Danger Room and X-Mansion can also be good on a selection of non X-Men heroes. You have to be an X-Men or mutant to use them if another player controls them, but anyone can use them if they play them themselves. Adam Warlock and Spider-Woman are great candidates since they can pick the best X-Men from multiple aspects and upgrade/heal them this way! But anyone technically can use them. Pixie is similar. She can grab Professor X or Beast among others - and everyone loves those! I would agree she should be considered as part of the overall card pool. I definitely agree with your observation that Justice always draws the short straw. Even their heroes in the expansions are instead replaced with multi-aspect characters. It feels like they don't know what to do with the aspect and will do anything they can to avoid dealing with it! It's a shame as I feel like it has so much potential, especially with Global Logistics-style control cards. As for my feelings on the latest cards? Taking things a bit broader, I've enjoyed 4/8 of the villains a lot, 6/8 of the heroes. I don't dislike the others as such, but I'm not that excited for them either. Unfortunately, I think the aspect/basic cards have been the weakest part of this cycle. I love the new allies overall, and there are some gems hidden around, but most of the non-allies that aren't trait-locked are just "okay". They don't particularly do anything new, just giving you alternative ways to do things you already could. There's no Honed Technique, no SHIELD stuff, no Go All Out stat-boosting archetype, no Repurpose... I can add new cards to old decks, but with the exception of bringing confused to the masses with Psylocke, Professor X and Dazzler, there's no drastic changes. There is not a single new true archetype beyond X-Men tribal stuff I can think of. My hope is that, as you allude to in the video, they were using this wave as a way to introduce the X-Men cards all at once. And then, even as we get more mutants, the aspect/basic cards will be more general-purpose. I actually think we have WAY too many X-Men basic supports as it is, so I certainly hope they don't add more. As you also say in the video, all the X-Men support cards are so good you might just want to run them all. And what that means is that X-Men decks have a lot less creative space than other tribes, because so many of their basic cards are near-mandatory. That's a bit of an exaggeration, I don't come close to including all the X-Men supports in my decks, and yet Utopia especially is so good! So that to me does mean it and a bunch of X-Men allies are almost auto-includes - or purposeful exclusions you leave out just for variety. The Web-Warriors have the same problem - their basic cards are way above average. Champions, Guardians, and Avengers do not have that problem. Guess we'll see how it ends up! It's an interesting topic I've given thought to before.
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
Thanks VT! I didn’t notice that about Nightcrawler! That’s another one I can move to the middle, thus making the cycle even less self contained from a numbers standpoint. But I agree, even though the numbers say there are still plenty of cards for the other decks, all the best one’s definitely got saved for the X-men. Other than a lot of solid allies, nothing much else jumps out for the general pool

@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
That’s a very good point! I think they knew the X-men would draw a lot of new players and so designed the packs around that assumption. It’s always tricky trying to design a game like this to please such a wide array of different players needs, but I’ve always thought they did a really good job!

Ya I like the reprints in the sets as I am one of those people who build decks for most of the heros I have (balancing the 4 aspects) and I leave them built for different themes so my brother and I can just grab a deck and play instead of needing to build it each time we want to play.
@RocketMagnetUK Жыл бұрын
My guess would be the main reason is simply to make balancing remotely manegable while freeing them up creatively for the new cycles. So go wild with the new stuff locked to a cycle safe in the knowledge you wont inadvertently break something you didn't consider, couldn't reasonably foresee or would probably not come up in play testing in a reasonable amount of time. So makes perfect sense to me to wall off certain cards to allow more design freedom and as the card pool grows then increasing %age of locked cards going forward to give you at least a fighting chance to keep some semblance of control. Overall outside of competitive play if you don't like it you can ignore card restrictions if you really want to.... So yeah I think there is a genuine technical reason to do this IMO.
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
Very well put, and I agree! Trait locking cards allows them to be more powerful and interesting, while also giving each team its own flavor and fun toys to play with. I think a lot of people are concerned that maybe it’s becoming too insular and the general card pool isn’t receiving enough new cards to keep the old heroes interesting. But, by the numbers at least this cycle wasn’t any worse than the others, and was actually a little better than the previous one. Now, that’s by total available cards. Percentage-wise this one did have a smaller percent of general availability. But it still gave as many individual options as the other cycles generally do

Really interesting video. One of my favourites on your channel. Awesome content - love it! I don’t have the full collection, so won’t have hit as many reprints as you, but I would say I actually like some of the reprints. I also won’t play nearly as often as you guys, so the game won’t become as stale/need for new stuff as quickly (I can barely keep up with new releases and there is sooooo much already available) I’m huge fan of the thematics of the game. I love how the game interprets hero and card powers (even when a card/hero might not be the best) I’m very unlikely to play say Shadow Cat vs Green Goblin. I like to keep my villains/hero’s in context. I also like my hero deck to feel the same way so the team/trait specific cards really help to enhance that even just having Xmen art of resource reprints helps with that. Think I’ll have to get another game in tonight now…..

As my collection grows it starts to get cumbersome making decks with so many options to choose from, so I am quite fine with them reducing the number of general-use cards they release over time. Give us more limited-use cards or trait/team-specific cards, as it helps limits your choices to a reasonable level. I am even fine with reprints, I just wish they limited reprints so that at most you are left with 6 copies of any particular card if you buy one of each pack. I don't need 30 Genius cards for instance. At least give us more card art variety so we can have some fun with it.

Minor point on reduced cost X-men Allies. If you compare Colossus to War Machine he's about equally costed outside of X-men. I've played him when I wanted Tough Allies. Angel is not bad for a 3 compared to other basic or Justice Allies for having 2 atk and 3 hp. Angel for the Aerial deck is a guaranteed though and possibly a Justice deck hungry for attack. Storm though, is not well costed even with her discount. I'd struggle to want to play her except in scenarios where the swap is advantageous. I personally wouldn't count them.

My issue with this game is that some people defend the reprints with the "oh yeah I like them because that way I can have my 50 decks built without problem". Reprints is a way to steal your money. Now why are there reprints, if they have new cards per cycle on Arkham Horror, or greater synergy cards (practiced, innate, illicit, etc) rather than introducing a new mechanic every cycle and then forget about it in later expansions? I think some things can get better, hopefully we will get less modular enemies which are getting ridiculous and go back to new cards that work with every hero
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
I think the main reason there are so many reprints is because unlike LotR and Arkham, they aren’t expecting everyone to buy everything for this game. So the people who jump around in their purchases still have a shot at getting older cards they don’t own. I would be very curious to know what the percentage of people who buy everything is vs. the percentage of people who pick and choose. I’m with you, I would much rather have the packs be full of brand new cards (though I do enjoy the mod sets) than there being another round of 3 more Downtimes lol. But I always say it’s a tricky balance making a game like this that appeals to so many different types of customers and I think they do about as well as they could!
@Atlas-FM8 Жыл бұрын
@@GetUpandGame Counterpoint: Say you're a player who doesn't buy everything (in a hypothetical world where this game has no reprints), are you really going to care that you didn't get a reprint of X card if all the cards in the pack are brand new (and hopefully good) cards? Conversely even if a player doesn't buy everything it's possible for them to still get hit with reprints of cards they already own if for example they just have to own Spider-ham (because they love his character) but they also happen to own Venom and Nebula. Which will be even worse for them since their deck building pool is even smaller than it is for people who buy everything. The most obvious reason for so many reprints is because new cards cost more time and money to produce. Time and money FFG is either not willing to spend or cannot afford to spend and they figure people are going to buy the packs regardless because they want the heroes. What i find tough is that the reprints a lot of the time are cards people never really wanted in the first place and that the new deck building cards are often very hit or miss (I don't know how Outta my way" got printed) or tribe limited so it feels like the good deck building options are growing at a glacial pace sometimes (back of the pack mods also don't help in that department). Justice in particular is so far behind where I would have expected it to be 3+ years into the game. It feels like the designers often struggle to make interesting aspect cards outside of allies.

I'm not sure I can quite understand why you would consider spycraft and espionage to be still considered general use cards, but not upgrades that attach to allies with a specific trait. It seems to me that in both cases in the end everyone can use them as long as you have allies with the right trait. One very powerful application of Marked is to use it in conjunction with Into the Fray (which is a card you probably want to have anyway). If you use Into the Fray on a minion with Marked and 1 HP left, you will remove 5 threat from the main scheme *and* deal 5 damage to the villain. Add aggressive energy of other cards that boost the damage of an attack event and this will translate in even more threat and damage dealt to the villain.
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
I think you’re absolutely right. I’m not one to use ally upgrades hardly ever, so I just didn’t really think about how easy it would be to fill a non X-men hero deck with all the good X-men allies and also use the Training cards and Game Time. Thanks! Welcome to the game! This is typical of how they run the cycles. They’re generally focused around one team at a time. And in the case of the X-men, due to licensing agreements, they have to do a big chunk of mutant stuff all at once. What they did here that was a little different though is jam packed the cycle with X-men “only” cards which left the older teams out in the cold a little bit more than usual. Though now that we’ve seen almost all the heroes for the next wave that’s starting to make more sense. We’ve seen very little support for X-Force, and instead it seems they’ll also be making use of much of the stuff that came in this wave. So I guess it was just all front loaded at the beginning of the mutant trilogy, so now there’ll be more room for more generally useful stuff going forward 🙂 At the time of release it was a bit jarring, but now their plans are starting to make more sense lol

I think trait locking is really important for the theming of the game and also to help lower the barrier for deck building. But I wish this game did it as well as Lord of the Rings. In that game, each trait has a very particular flavor. Each trait has certain strategies and abilities that are unique to that trait in order to make them feel unique. Rohan decks employ different mechanisms than Silvan, which employ different mechanisms than Ents, etc. The theme of each trait really comes through their mechanisms. In Marvel Champions, I dont find that the Avengers have their own flavor , which differs from Guardians, or Champions. There’s no real theme to each trait.
@GetUpandGame Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a really good point. There isn’t much you can point to and say “I can see why you need to be a Guardian to play that”. I’m a big fan of the trait locked cards as it makes deck building easier and does give each team its own pool to choose from, but the theme could be WAY stronger. Also I super hope we get some kind of Sylvan style deck in this game! We’re on the right track with Sneak Attack and To Me My X-men but it isn’t quite there yet. Instead of Tree People bringing someone back we’ve got Go Down Swinging discarding them. So maybe it’s kind of a mix of Rohan and Sylvan

The amount of great X-men support cards is good and bad in a way. In a larger multiplayer game, all 7 of those supports are likely in play, especially since some can be used to help other players (x-Jet > Quincarrier for example). But in a solo game, can you afford to put all of these in your deck? The amount of useful cards may force you into different builds where you only include some of them. whereas it’s almost a no brainer to include Quincarrier in you solo game if you are an Avenger, because you don’t have other options really.

Great video and a nice analysis. It looks like FFG clearly gave the X-Men some love. Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I think by FFG limiting the release of general use cards in all decks in favor of sub-class specific cards or villain side schemes, is better for the overall health of the game. So many games suffer from bloat and fatigue from the shear volume of player cards. LOTR, my entry point into living card games, suffers from this greatly. A bloated card pool, power creep, and too many choices for new players tend to be hinderances down the road for the life of any card game.

I couldn’t agree more actually. I’m so mad at myself that I was so focused on being glad there were at least a decent amount of cards left over for the general pool (which to be fair was the point of the video) that I never took a second to say how much I enjoy the trait locked cards. I really like each team having a flavor and some cards all their own. They’ve struck a good balance between the two And 100% about LotR as well 👍👍

Are we done with X-Men already? I feel like there are hundreds of heroes and villains they could have added LOL maybe they're saving it for the future

Nope there are supposed to be 2 more X-men cycles! So lots more mutant joy to come! 😁

I really dont like your way of counting reprints. Counting resource cards is really unfair. They are in every deck for a reason, and counting for every hero is really artificial way to inflate a number. Plus you get one one each so technically all tree of them take same place as other reprints(because you get tree of them). If you dont count these your reprint number will reduce by half. Also counting reprints of new cards is really underhanded. Yeah you may get x-mansion more than once but what if you want to play with friend. A you both want to play x-men. Not getting enought of these cards(especially basic ones) will really limit you deck building because even thought you bought so many x-men heroes you can really build only one good x-men deck.

Thanks for the valuable feedback! I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy my method 🙏. I had no agenda going in and wasn’t trying to inflate the number of reprints. This was purely a mathematical exercise and I was counting the number of new cards being added to a pack, and the double resource cards do take up space that technically could’ve been new cards. And I did the same thing when counting for the previous cycles as well so the numbers were comparable across the whole spectrum of the game. As far as counting things like X-Mansion, X-Jet, and Utopia multiple times, those cards are unique so there can only be one in play anyways. So even in a multiplayer game there’s no reason for multiple people to run them, so those are just taking up space purely for the sake of being in that particular preconstructed deck. Which is fine if you keep them built, but again the exercise here was to determine the number of new deck building options. And ultimately my conclusion was that the new wave still sufficiently supported the overall card pool, despite all the reprints and X locked cards. So I certainly wasn’t thing to make it look bad or anything, I was actually fairly positive overall. 🙂 Thanks again for the excellent comment, and i hope my explanation made sense!

Sure. I acually dont mind it that much and it was really informative. Its just that your saying "look how many reprints i have" when half of them isnt really a reprint and more less mandatory card really rubbed me wrong way.
