Was there a liturgy in the early Church?
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, One God, Amen.
Is the liturgy an invention of the Church or established by Christ Himself?
The official written forms of the liturgy we have today are from the 4th century. Which is already very early in the Church, before any divisions. But is there evidence for liturgies before the 4th century?
Historically, the first liturgy was made by the Lord Himself when he blessed the bread and wine in the night of his sufferings/crucifixion and delegated such authority of transforming the bread and wine to His body and blood to His disciples, when he said: “Do this in remembrance of Me”. St. Paul confirmed that in 1 Corinthians 11: 23-25 (ref. below). This passage confirms that the Lord taught St. Paul to break the bread which was the Body & The Blood of the Lord. This is also confirmed in Rom 15:15-16 (ref. below) where St. Paul confirms his priesthood and that he offers a bloodless sacrifice as we do today.
