The true question here is: Was there someone CHAD enough to witness all four sacks of Rome between the Gauls and Ricimer? 🤔

Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator(cca485 - cca585 AD) lived for almost 100 years. He caught all the sacks of Rome of the VIth century.

Perhaps the 5th century was not a very good stretch of time for an average Roman citizen to live through. However, even with their steady elimination, a series of inspired leaders (i.e. Stilicho, Aetius, Majorian & etc...) kept appearing. Even with a small change of luck, any one of these might have averted the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire.

His name was Maximilian Unfortunatus and is quoted as saying: “Oh no! Not again!”

a little bit too romantic. you focused on the literal city itself, ignoring other signs, such as the crumbling of commerce, agriculture, declining living standards, literacy and so on.

Speaking of Roman longevity, the Steven Saylor's novel "Dominus" features among its protagonists a man from the Pinarii Family (whose members usually pass away shortly after their 70th birthday) who lives to be 93 years old. Said member witnessed the entire Crisis of the 3rd Century, the restoration of the world by Aurelian (in fact, he is the senator who marries Queen Zenobia) and the Christianization of the Empire, dying of a heart attack while arguing heatedly with the Emperor Constantine for the growing outlawing of pagan cults. What a complete life...

I don t think that your question have any answer because people of the 400's were not exactly aware of what was Rome 3 centuries before because most of them were not the same romans you are talking about....Late romans were christians, and i don t think they had a high opinion about old romans who persecuted Christians. And After all most of them were less educated than in the centuries before. The word " antiquity period" was created in the late 1500 AD.....Anyway, good Luck to find an answer !

Western Europe experienced a "Benjamin Button history" from 180 to 600. It looked like that the people were moving to the past. Every new generation was poorer than the previous one, and lived in a worse technology.

My grandad was born in 1900 and witnessed the Great war, the development of powered flight, the Great Depression, the growth of radio culture, WW2, the Atomic bomb, the jet age, the space age, the growth of TV culture, and even the beginning of the computer age. One of my earliest childhood memories is playing Space Invaders with him on our Atari one Christmas. He eventually died in 1987. That's an incredible range of events and technological changes when you think about it. Unparalleled in human history. Always kept his sense of humour though, right up till the end.

The concept of this video reminded me of Mr Tsutomu Yamaguchi. He's the only recorded and verified person to have witnessed and survived both atomic attacks by the USA on Japan. Look him up, he is quite a fascinating man.

A superb production. The storyline is an excellent, ingenious vehicle for the historical teachings, and the animation/editing/narration is first class this episode. Keep up the good work.

It may have been even more fascinating to have been born in AD 200 and lived to 100 years old, witnessed what happened from Septimius Severus to Diocletian and Constantine.

This thought experiment reminds me of the nurse who survived 3 shipwrecks. certainly it is possible to survive the sacks.
