The world is full with horrible things, that sometimes you wish you could change it. You think what if the victims get to experience something nice instead of horror? you want them to be alright, even if it's just in your imagination. I think it's not unheard of that some writers decided to flip some horrible tragedies to be a story full of hope and wonders.

Hayao Miyazaki's animes create settings to be both fantastical and grounded in reality. in an video he qoutes "most of our world is rubbish." and "today all of humanity's dreams are cursed somehow" People find it surprising that Miyazaki feels that way about the world. Some making memes on Miyazaki compared to Junji Ito with their personalities and animes/mangas too (which was funny to me)

This type of video is a good alternative to the ghost hunting ones, at least Sushi isn’t risking his safety in the woods. May I suggest re-reading True Singapore Ghost Stories and see how much Singapore has changed over the years, or just reading it again and see how it’s different reading it as a child vs an adult.

Mei sitting next to Jizo statues was supposed to be foreshadowing for when the mother dies at the end of the movie. The movie was about finding the ability to find joy in life despite horrible circumstances. Totoro is supposed to be the protector of children. Especially those who are suffering. Besides, if the children were dead, why would they cry after learning their mother died? The movie is famous for how realistic the crying was. Even being mentioned in anime such as Gintama.
