After making the sprinkle-handled ice scoop, many of you said you wanted WHOLE SPRINKLES. So I added the leftovers to a mold, then the whole thing had to sit for 8 weeks till I got my cast off!
Let me know if this was worth the wait!

Mabey you could make a mould out of some finished scales that way it would be quicker for the next knife video. Also you would be able to keep the aesthetic you were going for (no more white sprinkles) Just an idea I had while watching. Great video. Keep up the good work.

looks incredible! I think if you wanted to work with sprinkles again, I would love to see what happened if the sprinkles that were exposed got completely dissolved and then the voids filled back up with either clear resin to see whats underneath or colourful resin. Love your videos, thanks for the uploads

@@peterbrownwastaken You could maybe make a hollow handle in (just) resin with a cnc machine or a 3D printer or a mold. then polish it or paint it with resin then fill it with resin+sprinkels. That way all the sprinkles would remain whole on all sides.

The 3D effect of the sprinkles looks amazing. If you make a mold in the shape of the handle scales you should be able to keep intact sprincles on all sides except the inner one (which is not visible) Paired with a bronze finger guard, this probably would look amazing.

Next time you're working with a material that you want to avoid sanding, it might help to pour a 1-2mm layer of clear into the mold first, then the media. That way you'll have an extra buffer of clear resin on the outside that will be harder to accidentally sand through.

an easier trick than hot gluing wood to the top: use masking tape and superglue. one strip of masking tape on the object adhesive side down, same on another object, put them together with superglue between them. holds strong for shearing forces (like sanding) and comes off easy with little to no clean up
@rdstngry

I've seen John Saunders use that trick on his CNC mills, under some pretty impressive loads, Over on his channel NYC CNC. Done it myself duplicating plywood parts with a router and a trim bit.

Consider, sanding and forming the handles of a knife until it's nice and comfortable, then making a mold of them and casting a new set that are the perfect shape without having all the sanding damage to the materials inside.

Make a silicone mold for the scales so next time it's easier, also I would suggest making this in 3 pours a thin clear layer you can sand down and polish, the sprinkle layer in the middle and a layer on the outside to flatten and polish so the sprinkles don't get sanded down

Peter- I have a challenge that I think will display (and maybe) tax your resin and wood working skills. I would love to see you build a marble race using various wood scraps in or out of resin, and various "Rube Goldberg" contraptions on it. It could be made in several interlocking sections and maybe 2-3 feet tall in places. Are you up to it? I think this could end up being an award winning project, ala Makers Central.

Hey Peter, a neat little trick I learned from John Malecki when taping two things together to make an identical cut is to use like blue tape on both sides, add glue on one side, activator on the other and them press them together. Has a nice hold, but is easier to remove once you're done.

With that rasp bit on your drill press, you'll find it easier (and safer) if the work piece sits flat on the drill table by lowering the bit (or raising the table). It will stay perpendicular to the bit and give you more control.

Another comment but as far as getting the pins sanded, i believe it's Kyle Royer i learned this from but put painters tape on the scales and pop the pins through. Then you can sand them most of the way down with a sacrificial reference surface and finish them off with files and some care. I've used it on my own knife scales and it works surprisingly well as long as you pay attention which you seem to. Cheers and good luck in the future

Next time you need to sand something like this, I would take a router to a good size piece of scrap wood and cut in a slot the same size as the thing you're sanding plus some thumb holes and then hot glue it into the slot.. Make it the same depth as your final target and just sand until it's flush. This is what we used to do in the metal shop when using the belt sander to finish stainless parts.

Just a suggestion... you probably already thought of this, but if you wrap the whole thing in blue or white painters tape, before drawing your lines and taking the scales to the drill press and/or bandsaw... it should (a) make your lines way more visible, and (b) protect the surface from scratches in the process.
