Benin city Nigeria was the biggest city in Africa in the 1400s. It’s emperor had over 1 million men at arms of he called his banners to assemble. Also his city had over 200 towns fenced inside the walled city with districts. It was an industrialised city of that era. Unfortunately the British burnt it down.

There was a lot of urbanization happening in West Africa about a thousand years ago: The towns of Northern Nigeria, Niger valley settlements like Jenne Jeno, Gao, a bit later Timbuktu, desert edge trading settlements like Awdaghust and the Ghana capital in Mauritania.

@@GrinningDentist Yes over that comfortably if all men of military age across the entire empire are assembled in one location when the king the Oba gives the command. Sometimes his mother the queen mother commands her own army and one queen would have about 250 different military campaigns in her like time. Besides (possibly) Alexander the Great and General Boliva who the nation of Bolivia was named after no human in recorded history has had over 100 mill Italy campaigns in one life time.

@@Ramiiam Very very true. In the case of BenIn it’s current king is about the number 35 in a long line. Second dynasty. Their empire is old. Over 2500 years of one family ruling. Benin city is older than Jesus Christ. Over 1500 years ago they were remodelling their city. That’s how old they were. So which other city anywhere on the continent of Africa can compete with that as a continuous capital city. That was my point. Over 250 villages of the same people united by military conquest at the foundation of the empire. All of them sending representatives to the eternal city as it grew.

Dhar Tichitt in Mauritania is an older settlement. People raised bullrush millet and built in stone and clay. I don't know about the cosmopolitan character, but these desert-edge settlements were meeting-places for farmers and herders.

Please look into the Noc civilization! Is is an extraordinary civilization that has distinct characteristics, as well as the unprecedented reputation of being one of the very few (perhaps ONLY) civilizations that went straight from stone tools to IRON tools; completely skipping the copper and bronze age! I just learned about it, but think it would be an excellent topic for your channel!

Why do so many sites discussing Benin show illustrations of Medieval Lisbon Portugal???? A British retaliatory battalion of a couple hundred men both White and Black defeated and destroyed Benin City within 48 hours! And took the brass plaques casting techniques learned from the Indo-Islamic brass and copper trade routes as war booty... Thousands of years ago it was just clay sculptures.
