Hi loves. Old garden lady here. I have gardened every way possible and about 10 years ago put in some beds like these. You are doing a great job. I probably wouldn't have worried about the liner. Every spring I put in a bag of mushroom manure and top soil to build up what decomposes in the bottom. Bone and blood meal are also fab amendments. But if you don't want animal products, do some exploring regarding comfrey tea. I have a big barrel I make twice a year and water with it. The tomatoes love this! Good luck with it. Gardening is so good for the soul. Just remember, keep having fun with it, don't let it stress you.

I was struggling with depression. Getting outside in the garden soil and planting in the garden food and medicine. Same happened to me. A few years back I was displaced from my home do to a sewage accident. Yes we were literally deep in shit, lol. Funny looking back now but it was one of the most challenging times of my life-- and I'm a mother of three. It got so bad i could not sleep. And I would cry randomly at the most weird triggers. Finally my husband forced me to go to the doctor. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Me hell no, I'm the happiest person I know but they did give me this cool medicine 💊 that allowed me to sleep right from the first night I took it-- so my husband convinced me to follow through with therapy that had been recommended. The psychologist suggested a garden bed as part of my therapy. I was living in a trailer, (2yrs) we were by the side of a lake and started my garden. It was the best therapy ever, the sun the caring the exercise and most importantly the peace of mind. Before long I realized I wasn't worried about the house anymore I was worried about the garden beds.And when I began cooking 🍳 with what I grew i was in heaven again. Providing and caring ❤ for my family 👪 I discovered home is where I am with the ones I love, and not a building. 5 years later, I'm back in the house 🏠 still gardening, drug free, and happy. God bless you both and thanks for the videos

I think there is a study about what digging in the dirt does to the human body, other than wreck your nails 😉. There's also a some of research on sugar, processed foods, gluten and inflammatory foods and its relation to depression due to gut inflammation causing inflammation in the brain. We so forget that our bodies are not separate pieces but one organism. Modern humans .. . aren't as smart as we think we are 😉🤗

No need to line the bottom. You’ll not get weeds at that depth..if you’re concerned use cardboard which will break down and contribute to soil health. Plus doesn’t block beneficial access to worms and microorganisms.

So good to see you again Bea!!! I love Theo, but missed you. Can I make a suggestion from a "raised bed oldie"? Edge the rim of the metal with either an old garden hose split down one side or an old Firehouse. After a bit the edges get snaggie and sharp and become painful. Next...get both of you good sturdy gloves. Saves the fingers and palms from stickers. Thanks for letting us share your journey!

Pipe insulation is already split and has the sticky glue strip. Or, I've seen others use the pool noodles split so they fit the edge. Saves your arms from scrapes.

Start a wormery, the best fertilizer ever! And get a chipper to create your own mulch. Gardening and microbes in soil is the best for combating stress and depression. The matured chicken poop in your compost bins will make it even more fertile.
@bobbie-blu2 жыл бұрын
The raised beds look great. For the other bed I wouldn't put the weed membrane on the floor as all the weight of the logs and compost material on top of it could make it more difficult for worms to naturally migrate up into it. Plus the native soil underneath it will help break down the logs more evenly and quicker without the membrane.

Either buy pool noodles or plumbing pipe insulation and put them on the top edge of the metal sides of the beds . This will keep you from cutting yourself with the sharp edges of the metal. The pool noodles you can just slice down one side with a razor and they work great .

First, you don’t replace the chain on a chainsaw unless it breaks. You sharpen it. A little site called KZbin has lots of places that show you how. Second, Olive trees are a lot of work. You have to constantly cut those suckers off otherwise they’ll kill the main tree and take over. They go wild which give inferior olives. All those fruit trees need pruning. Do it when they’re dormant or before they start blooming. Farming is hard work.

It is hard to cut down trees but you are also helping the trees out as you pointed out. I would recommend researching companion planting and square foot gardening to help get the best yield and quality of produce. I had I thought when I saw the logs. If there are any that have a particularly beautiful ring pattern that you like consider saving a small chunk. Then cut it into coasters for inside the barn :) How lovely would it be to put your drink down on a piece of a log from the property. :) Happy planting

Wonderful job! I’m an avid gardener and have a few hugelkultur beds. One thing that I wish I’d done years ago is devote a whole bed to asparagus. I don’t know if you like to eat asparagus, but it is very low maintenance and it is a perennial….so you could have asparagus for decades from one year’s planting.

Morning Kids! Sharing my story with you. Last year I moved from TX to IN in November. Shorty after (December), I had a trip to the emergency room, then an angiogram, subsequent med changes for hypertension. Ultimately, my physicians said that my life stress from the past few years was making me ill. My wise doctors said, "what do you enjoy doing"? Now, I live by our city forest easement. So I say "I love raking leaves". And, I started. Raked nearly a quarter acre of underbrush, big logs and dead leaves. AMAZING how the exercise made me feel. My 'trick' is to work for an hour or so, rest, and then do a bit more. Over the past 11 months, this all composted down!! I have beautiful soil for my garden this next year. (2022) I didn't build boxes. Instead I built low boxes from old shutters (free). Along all my pathways, I drug/dragged all the large limbs and branches. And ... Kept raking the smaller branches and leaves behind those small barriers. Over 11 months, this has been my stress relief and I have WONDERFUL soil as a result of the daily exercise of raking and picking up sticks. Absolutely LOVE what you are doing! Hint: make small compost heaps around your property...it will compost down quicker - and, make for easier lifting to your big bed later. Oh ya, wear boots and gloves. Ant and spider bites are miserable.Have Fun!!!! It is so worth the work and the wait. fyi, I'm almost 70. 😁❤️U kids.

Oh Bee, You have done my heart and soul some good seeing you out and about looking healthy and absolutely beautiful. While you were going through your dark time, I as well was going through a dark time and needed professional medical help. It was a very scary time without my family close by and being alone. You are so fortunate to have Theo to take over and he did an amazing job with the videos, however I have missed your sunny smile. Thank you so much for coming back. As for your garden bed you will be sooooo shocked how much it will sink , mine sunk about 60 cm in the first year and it was a very large bed. I am hoping you are going to cap the bed with something like wood, piping whatever, that steel can cut like a razor and deep (Don't ask how I know 🙄). Really looking forward to future videos. God bless 🙏 from the Ottawa Valley, Ontario Canada 🤗🇨🇦
@lindacade39752 жыл бұрын
I love seeing how you are making your property work well for you. Just a couple suggestions for the raised bed. A cap around the top to cover the metal edge (mitering the corners) will allow you to lean on it when gardening. On each post, through the cap, you can drill a hole to insert a PVC pipe to go from one side across to the other in an arc. This allows you to cover the bed with plastic to make a mini cold frame or shade cloth if it gets too hot. Using the next size PVC pipe, cut into about 4" +/- lengths gives you clips to attach the plastic or shade cloth in place on the slightly smaller diameter arc. Happy gardening!

In February this year I created a new wooden bed 16’ x 4’ that was 3’ tall. I filled it just exactly like you: logs from almond and fruit trees, then twigs, leaf mulch and then compost and soil. I swear the veggies and flowers from this bed were the best in my entire garden all summer long. This bed needed less water then all my other beds, and the soil life was amazing. Only complaint was that my chickens loved it because the worms were so plentiful. Watch out for the girls jumping in for snacks!
@courtneymartin38372 жыл бұрын
Start collecting your chicken poop and hold onto it for about 6-9 months in a compost heap (that will give it time to leach the harmful stuff) and then throw it in the bed to ammend your soil. You will have some ROBUST, HEALTHY plants afterward! WELL DONE, YOU TWO! 👏👏👏👏👏

Recommend getting a good pruning book by Christopher Brickell. As you cut off the dead/damaged/diseased limbs on your trees, Christopher's books gives you great details on making sure the live portion of your trees heal properly. His books are my go-to guides on pruning trees. Fruit and non-fruiting trees have different pruning practices, and having the proper cuts will give you many more years of your fruit trees producing a good harvest.

I have done this same thing. The soil level will drop some each year. I add more leaves and my own compost. Also, use companion planting to keep bugs out of my veggies and it works really well. Marigolds the are beautiful and help keep bugs away plus Basil, rosemary, garlic and onions have a strong smell and you can plant them between your other veggies. I use wind chimes and glittery twirling things to help keep feel and birds off of my stuff. I love my garden and it feels so good when I am eating something that I grew myself. The fresh taste is amazing! I know you are going to enjoy it and have fun.

Job well done to you both👍, my only tips would be maybe eliminate the bottom layer of weed suppressant fabric, it's most likely not needed as the beds are so deep, weeds from the base won't be an issue, also without that bottom layer of fabric, worms and microbes will find it easier to migrate into your beds. My next tip would be to think of adding a layer of your chicken droppings into your leaf layer (or even with each of the other layers), that will be a great nitrogen source to help balance out all that carbon fill, which will jumpstart the composting process under your future soil and compost layer, which should keep your plants nice and happy. Good luck with it all👌
@allanb522 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what timeframe you expect, but we put some small twigs in our compost heap and they are still in tact. Those logs will take 20-30 years to rot down and hardwood may never rot at all. Use the brush and even rotton twigs but use the bigger wood for fuel. PS we are also on central Portugal and we are burning last years cuttings we left them to dry out and the insects have gone, they like only the damp..

Bea remember to look up what plant or herb compliments the vegetable . Example sweet basil next to tomatoes helps with the taste of your tomatoes and is a base ingredient for pesto sauce for your pasta dinner. Garlic is a good companion in a vegetable garden as it nourishes the soil in the beds and repels the insects that attack your veggies. Your veg boxes are going to be stunning and resourceful when finished.
