Actually the story of the woman seeing someone looking down from the 4th funnel is true as a matter of fact one of the last pictures of the Titanic taken from an approaching tender shows the Titanic's port stern and if you look real close at the top of the 4th funnel you will see a small dot on top….that is one of the firemen looking down at the passengers from the 4th funnel.

The 4th funnel had a purpose...many actually...venting areas mainly. But I gotta say those ships with only three funnels wouldnt look as elegant as they did with 4 and the raking of them was perfect IMO.

It was used for venting The 1st class and 2nd class kitchens as they were butt to butt under the 4th funnel, also the 1st class smoking room was built around the 4th funnel encasement, so yes. It had many uses.

Honestly didn't know that the 4th funnel helped out with so many of the Titanics functions! Thank you for doing this video!
@falcon664
@falcon664 2 жыл бұрын
Technically it wasn't a funnel at all. The funnel begins at the top of the boilers where the exhaust uptakes are attached, then converge at the center, then route the exhaust through the stack. That shape resembles a kitchen funnel, wide side facing down, hence the name. There were no boiler uptakes at the fourth stack. Since several exhausts meet and exit through a common structure, the better term for the Titanic's fourth is a stack. (I edited out ventilation shaft, though it did also provide that function).
@renerpho
@renerpho 2 жыл бұрын
Calling it a ventilation shaft also puts it in a long line of "fake" structures built to hide ventilation shafts. Think the fake buildings hiding the ventilation shafts of the Paris metro.
@falcon664
@falcon664 2 жыл бұрын
@@renerpho Yes, that would be a reasonable comparison. The fourth stack beautifully conceals what would be some rather unattractive chimneys sticking up in that general area. I don't know about Paris, but New York has similar structures though at least one also conceals an emergency exit and in the past housed electrical equipment in addition to the ventilator shaft. So, like the Titanic, those do conceal functional elements. But you've got me thinking, since several exhausts meet and exit at that point, stack is the better term. Those big buff and black enclosures are all better described as stacks. Thanks, I'll try to edit my comment.

Hey, Sam. I have a couple suggestions for future videos: 1.) Married couples. I know you've made videos about the children of the Titanic and the heroes of the Titanic, so I thought it would be interesting to learn about the different couples who were on the Titanic. I know you mentioned Isidor and Ida Straus in previous videos, so maybe you could tell us more about their lives and the legacy following the Titanic disaster. 2.) The Titanic's whistles. About a month ago, I found a three-part documentary series that covers some of the artifacts and people of the Titanic. The videos WERE on KZbin, but I can't find them. Maybe they were taken down for copyright reasons? Anyway, in the third episode, they discussed how the Titanic's whistles were recovered and restored. The people involved in the project discussed how surreal the experience was because they got to hear the same sound the passengers and crew heard in 1912. I know you've discussed artifacts in previous videos, so I thought the whistles would be cool to discuss in a video.

Lawrence Beesley's account in "Loss of the Titanic" describes hearing from an American passenger about the fireman peeking over the edge of the funnel down at everyone: "As one of the tenders containing passengers and mails neared the Titanic, some of those on board gazed up at the liner towering above them, and saw a stoker's head, black from his work in the stokehold below, peering out at them from the top of one of the enormous funnels--a dummy one for ventilation--that rose many feet above the highest deck. He had climbed up inside for a joke, but to some of those who saw him there the sight was seed for the growth of an "omen", which bore fruit in an unknown dread of dangers to come. An American lady--may she forgive me if she reads these lines!--has related to me with the deepest conviction and earnestness of manner that she saw the man and attributes the sinking of the Titanic largely to that." The cutaway diagrams of the fourth funnel shows that there is a ladder going up through the inside of the middle of the funnel, and next to it, there is a long flue pipe that connects to the flues that carry the smoke from the 1st class Smoking Room and the Galley. Those who have models of the ship will note that the opening of this flue pipe is the small circular hole at the top of the funnel grilling. There's copy of this diagram at Encyclopedia Titanica. On Olympic, stokers going to the top of the 4th funnel was very much a thing and there is a photo taken from the top of the funnel looking at a stoker taking, well, a smoke break. You can find a copy of this photo at Magnificent Titanic. Finally, there is a remarkable account of men escaping Britannic by going up through the fourth funnel! I would include links, but YT lately has been blocking the posts with links in them.

It still had a purpose. It was fitted with piping to vent excess steam from the low-pressure turbine for the central propeller, which itself was powered by leftover steam from the two large reciprocating engines, thus why it was a low pressure turbine. Most people focus on Titanic’s luxury, but I absolutely love the technical aspects of Titanic’s engineering.

It's so refreshing; and your own enthusiasm and dedication are just amazing. Thank you for such a well presented and informative channel 👍. I had wondered if the "fake" funnel had a true function, and why some pictures (even some historical ones) show "bogus smoke" emitting from it. So it isn't entirely bogus, after all. It also helps explain why there are so few vents on the decks, for such a large vessel. A quick thought: If the ship had been balanced for three funnels, instead of three plus one, how would it have influenced the rate at which she sank? Any ideas on that, anybody?

Well I have a idea I am 9 years old so my not be the best 1. The 4th funnel collapsed on a few people during the sinking so those people wouldn't have died 2. Then there would have to be more of those air vent things that was on the. Lusitania like how sam beautifully shows it in his video And if there was three funnels there would have been more room because the funnel took a lot of space And the ships 4 th funnel wouldn't have fallen and pushed collapsible a and b so the people would have died in the the lifeboat from the suction from the ship as it went down I hope this answered you question I am only 9 years old so this won't be to good of a good idea So ik it's trash but I hope this atleast said something bye have a amazing day

Hi my name is Kensleigh's and I am a new subscriber to the channel Q: Was the 4th funnel fake on the Titanic? A: No… it was not fake - as it served a very important role that didn’t have everything to do with aesthetics (or to make the ship look more impressive) The rear-most funnel on Titanic served the following functions: ventilated air to/from the ship’s medical compartment ventilated air to/from the ship’s engine room ventilated air to/from the 1st and 2nd Class kitchens and was a chimney for the 1st Class smoking room fireplace

Was the fourth funnel, "fake", heck no. Was it functional, yes it was. Just not a funnel for engine exhaust emissions. Did the fourth funnel add to the aesthetics of the design? Well, that is of course subjective, but from what our host suggests here is that a fourth funnel imparted reliability, a safe journey and confidence in the vessels level of comfort.

One of my favorite stories about how popular 4-stacked liners were at the time is: A travel agent was trying to convince an immigrant to sail on the brand-new IMPERATOR. The immigrant steadfastly refused all entreaties, waving a brochure of the older, much smaller DEUTSCHLAND. Why? Because the IMPERATOR had only THREE funnels. The DEUTSCHLAND had FOUR. Just goes to show how important 4 funnels were in those days. Even the WINDSOR CASTLE and ARUNDEL CASTLE, 2 smaller ships of the Union-Castle Line, would be built with 4 funnels when they didn't need them (in fact, 2 of the funnels on each were later removed).

Sam - I continue to enjoy seeing somebody as young as you with your high interest in the past such as the Titanic tragedy. I think it is important to remember the past and learn from it. When I was in Jr. High, I started a passion of studying World War 2 in the Pacific. Years later, I went on to serve in the Navy (but end up on the Atlantic instead) although I had requested the west coast. As I got to know more about WW2 and my own family, I found that I had three great-uncles who served in the Navy and were part of the invasion of the Philippines. So, it is always possible to learn something new about the past just when you think you have learned it all. Keep up the good work as Titanic was another very interesting study I took up in my younger years (quite some time ago).

When McBrayne scrapped its Columba of 1878 in 1935, quite a magnificent and popular fast paddle steamer in her own right, the company needed a prestige steamer for her route, the Royal Route from Glasgow to Ardrishaig. The used the Queen Alexandria II, a turbine steamer of 1912 with two funnels. They called her the Saint Columba and gave her a third funnel. It was completely fake. It's sole purposes were a) as a deckchair store and b) to make her look like a mini Queen Mary. She lasted till 1958.

I know that the Diesel engines are better in speed, and long life plus I’m sure other things too than the steam engines. The diesel trains were the end of those steam powered locomotives 🚂 from old. That was great engineering, purposing a dummy for ventilation and extra smoke from the galleys and the fire place. But I wonder: would it not have made more sense, to put the "ventilation funnel" as the first funnel, so that no smoke from the others can get into the ventilation system?

It was more about the aesthetics and practicality as to why it was placed where it was. It would have looked odd to see the last 3 funnels spewing smoke and the first one with very little smoke. Also, it was about space utilization on the ship. The first three funnels were directly over the six boiler rooms toward the bow of the ship, which allowed the smoke to be vented directly up and out instead of laterally. If you look at a cutaway of the ship you can see the large ducting that vented the smoke out of the ship.

That brings some balance with the looks of the ship, with only 3 it will become ugly and unbalanced.

I believe there’s actually a photo of the person ontop of the fourth funnel, I believe it was when she was departing from Queenstown.

It's not a fake funnel at all. It's real with a small purpose adding to the look and scale of the ship. Didn't funnel anything though.

if the titanics 4th funnel was used to get rid of smoke from the boiler aka more boiler rooms what would happen if titanic went full speed with more boiler rooms would this make it harder to dodge the iceberg or make even more catastrophic damage? just wondering

Short version, it was not a fake funnel. It was used to filter out a fire place and kitchens etc. it just wasn’t made to filter out smoke from the boilers.

Yes the 4th funnel on the Titanic was a dummy funnel ( it housed the kennels for the dogs of first class passengers)

As to your question Sam, no, I have not heard of the ”Titanic” (sp.?), her story sounds quite interesting to me, though! I’ve been following your channel for quite a while and I hope you make more videos about that ”Titanic“ ship in the future!

The fourth funnel was also sort of a tower you could climb up a ladder and look out the top there was a documentary about the titanic on you tube that tells about the people who worked in the engine room in this documentary they show a worker climbing the fourth funnel and looking out at the top

why didn't they use the front funnel for ventilation as it would have access to the most fresh air i would think the last funnel would suck a certain amount of smoke from the other funnels just my opnion
