I think the reason they are playing cards that include "if the battled monster isn't destroyed in the battle" is because they are generally playing against Number holders. Maybe more in the case of Kite than Yuma since the latter already has an ace Number card, but it still works for both. They want to make the "Number protection" a disadvantage to the opponent.

I don't know if it's explained how he knows this, but I think that's the reason Kite was comfortable making plays Yuma could stop. He knows Yuma's rash, so in the first duel, he plays a more defensive game that invites Yuma to make mistakes (ironically, it's Astral that asks for offence in that duel, but it's out of character enough that it might as well have been him accounting for Yuma). He also knows astral is cautious, so he makes a brazen bluff in duel two that Astral isn't comfortable calling.

As an example, when dueling Tron (Vetrix for the dubbies), Astral states that they can Zexal Morph in that duel due to the sphere field having a similar energy to the inside of the Emperor’s Key, implying that a certain energy needs to be in place for them to do so. So really, even if they wanted to Zexal Morph against Kite, I don’t think they could have managed. As for who I think would win if they rematches at the end of the series, I think it could go either way. A big 5D's example is Treasure Cards of Harmony / Cards of Consonance. In the 5D's anime, it was just a simple Destiny Draw for Tuners (discard a Tuner to draw 2 cards), but the OCG/TCG version specifically requires you to discard a Dragon-Type Tuner with 1000 ATK or less to draw 2 cards because Debris Dragon was the Tuner that Yusei discarded in the episode that he used it in. But again, Kite could have attack Leviathan Dragon instead of Utopia, so after the ban and return, the +500 att for any xyz material would have triggered once, since Leviathan still had one material. And even if he didn't do that, Photon Dragon still was stronger than both Yuma numbers. Kite had the upper hand no matter what in those 2 last turns. In the end, the only way for Yuma and Astral to at least survive longer was to never attack, using Utopia to stop Photon dragon in attacking, and hoping to draw something that could destroy Photon Dragon, or at least stop his ability for at least 1 turn. But at this point thier deck have shown little to no traps and spells cards able to do that. And they were not able yet to fuse themself (something that seems a requirements for them to "spawn" a zexal weapon in the deck). They had a creature able to destroy Galaxy eyes without attacking, N.61 Volcasaurus, but it requires 2 "level 5" monsters to be summoned, and for what we have seen, most of the basic creatures in Yuma deck were level 4 or lower. Okay so in the third duel, if I understand the battle phase well enough lmao, so Utopia Ray actuvates effect, drops GEPD atk while boosting its own, and then as you said, as well as shown in the animaation, "Yuma attacks Galaxy Eyes", SO that should mean that GEPD was already TARGETED for an attack, and we have passed attacj declaration, right? Well Kite uses the effect shenanigans of Galaxy Zero AFTER Galaxy Eyes was targeted for the attack, but the anime made it out like GEPD was never targeted in the first place, so if the attack declaration has already passed, you can't just undeclare an attack (again, as far as my battle phase knowledge is concerned), so Yuma's attack on the 0 atk GEPD shoulld'be still happened, even with Zerozerock on the field, since that only prevents being targeted for an attack, and not being attacked at all. (Zerozerock:Your opponent cannot target face-up Attack Position monsters with 0 ATK for attacks.) So unless someone wants to correct me on something I'm wrong about, please, be my guest. Until then, I'm chocking that up to shenanigans, and Yuma should've won from tha attack

Notes from an Ancient Gear Pilot; Tbh, a lot of the XYZ player's in the anime played there deck's badly or didn't have enough general support card's in their Deck. Storyline-wise Yuma being as bad as he was in the beginning (due to his Older Sibling preventing him from learning from a professional) could be easy to forgive. THE OTHER'S (save for Shark being an ex-pro and Kite having spent the majority of his young life training non-stop for this), and I'm looking at YOU Kathy Katherine, have none. I think their third duel was the best duel. Well despite losing Yuma won. After all Yuma goal in the duel was to make sure Kite would not give up dueling and thats what happend. And also Yuma was able to hold his own and almost beating Kite without Astrals advice or Zexal. This was legit the first duel in the series in which Astral while being beside Yuma did not help him but rather was only moral support as it was how Astral stated it was Yumas duel and with no stakes aside from if Kite would continue dueling or not there was no harm. After all Kite lost only 1 time in the whole series and that lost was only due to Ventrix using Hart against Kite, otherwise i think Kite would had also won that duel. So it shows how much better Yuma got in a short amount of time and well who knows if they dueled Offscreen for fun.

Looking back at the first duel, Kite’s moves after Yuma summons Utopia are dependent on Yuma attacking. However if Yuma didn’t attack, Kite wouldn’t be able to do damage next turn as Yuma would use Utopia’s effect. Kite would chain Galaxy Eyes’ effect but it would only have 3500 ATK. Next turn, Yuma would successfully get his Cross Attack play off as Kite wouldn’t have drawn Lumenize as he couldn’t play Photon Wind. Kite would have 1500 LP left. On Kite’s nex turn, he would most likely set Lumenize and end his turn and then the duel is in speculation as we don’t know what Yuma would’ve drawn next. Given his field he might leave his monster’s in attack so he can use his Mirror Mail. But we know Kite will draw Photon Cerberus but the most damage Kite can do this turn is 1000 attacking Utopia with Galaxy Eyes meaning Yuma would still have 3000 LP.

I think Zexal has a lot of "If a monster battles but it's not destroyed" kind of effects because of the Number rule, so all oponents will have monsters that will lose in attack dmg but wont be destroyed, makes it a bit not so situational, also, the "lowered attack" i see a ton of lower attack in everyone's decks, its like hard removal was banned in Zexal so they just have attack manipulation. (I mean it, theres so little removal in all Zexal I cant even remember 1 monster removal, and not even good backrow removal, hardest control I saw in the entire series was bouncing to hand, which is ok i guess but not that good)

I thought you would talk about more about the not summoning utopia thing in the second game. Think about it. Instead of using double defender he used both gogogo to summon utopia and kill reverse buster. What does kite do now? Photon hurricane is useless. Photon circle is useless. Photon Leo can't be summoned. Photon spear is useless since he won't have time to tribute summon leo and spear plus circle is bad. I guess with armor back he can do smth but nothing to clear utopia. Even the cards he draws next or bad. He can't summon galaxy eyes. His galaxy storm is useless since utopia overlay units would never be used. Photon shock does nothing. Astral could have won. And the thing is that summoning utopia is a completely reasonable play to make in that instance. It's just 1 backrow and a one of monster he isn't even sure he has in his hand that prevented him from doing that.

One thing to consider about Double Bind is that it would work against Number monsters, which the majority of significant opponents have had, since not being destroyed by non-Numbers is an effect. However, by this point in the show, Yuma can already get Utopia out reliably and so shouldn't need to negate the protection that way. Personally, I'd guess Yuma has the card as an answer to people who try to reduce the attack of his Number monsters to hit over them, and chose a card that has a situational side benefit, rather than picking the card primarily for the second effect.

A relevant thing to note as far as Yuma and Astral not using Zexal during the third duel is that they can only become Zexal in an atmosphere that mimics one from another dimension, or something along those lines, I don't remember the specifics. That's why Astral notes to Yuma that the Sphere Field from their duel against Tron is like that just before they become Zexal, and why they couldn't do it here. As far as whether they would or not, I'm not sure, but it wasn't an option.

Fun Fact: I saw this video in my recommended about a week or two ago so I saved it in watch later because at the time I only just started the duel carnival saga and did not want to spoil too much of the duel (Title does kinda spoil the result but there's something to be said for knowing where the duel is going and being pumped the entire time knowing the end result but not knowing how it will get there but that's neither here nor there) As for my thoughts on the duel I don't really understand at this point in the show the Zexal transformation I mean it is mentioned several times that shining draw in the hands of a powerful duelist can shape destiny I'll have to remember that as I continue down the series, that said I was reminded heavily of the Pharaoh vs Yugi duel at the end of the series that he too could do a similar thing, though I may be completely wrong about that assessment. As for knowing that Kite and Yuma wont duel again I am oddly okay with that kind of a spoiler up to this particular duel I was on the edge of my seat because in all previous duels Kite would have claimed Astral and his numbers but now with the stakes vanished and they could not worry about defeat and just duel with all their being, I mean hell I still remember Jaden's comment in the graduation duel when Zane revives Cyber End Dragon over and over and over again "I am getting really sick of dealing with this guy". XD As for future duels I think the writers purposely left that point open for the viewer to shape that how they want in their own mind, as a writer myself there's something to be said for revisiting plot points later if there's time. Note: I agree a lot of the card effects in Zexal are so ridiculously specific for situations I could not imagine building a deck around having X, Y, or Z (Ironic word choice on my part) though I imagine only just finishing the Kites Plight episode there's more insanity to come, and I am looking forward to this show giving me a brain anyerisum, (the Vetrix and Doctor Faker duel at a certain point there were so many effects to take into consideration each turn that I gave up keeping up with what was going on and just switched my brain into airplane mode).

I feel like this is how a hypothetical 4th duel would go, since Yuma would no longer hold any Numbers except F0 after beating Astral: T1 (Yuma): Yuma sets Gogogo Golem and Half Unbreak, then passes. T2 (Kite): Kite Special Summons Photon Thrasher and Normal Summons Photon Crusher. He then Tributes both for Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, which then attacks Golem. Due to its effect, Golem survives the battle. But then Kite activates a new Quick-Play Spell called "Galaxy Backlash". Since an opponent's monster battled a Galaxy-Eyes monster but was not destroyed by that battle, the opponent's monster is banished, and his Galaxy-Eyes monster gains a second attack. Kite attacks directly with his Photon Dragon (he has Galaxy Shock in hand as well, so this attack would be lethal if it connects); in response, Yuma flips Half Unbreak targeting the Photon Dragon. The attack connects and Yuma goes down to 2500 LP (Half Unbreak halved the battle damage, so he takes 1500 instead of 3000). Kite Sets Galaxy Shock and passes turn. T3 (Yuma): Yuma Special Summons his Toy Knight then Normal Summons Gagaga Magician. He then overlays both for Gagaga Cowboy, which is Special Summoned into Defense Position. Yuma uses Cowboy's effect to deal 800 damage to Kite (who now has 3200 LP left), and then uses Different Dimension Reincarnation to bring back Gogogo Golem, also into Defense Position. With this, Yuma passes turn. T4 (Kite): Kite immediately goes to his Battle Phase and orders his dragon to attack Cowboy, which gets destroyed. He then uses Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy DDR, which subsequently destroys Gogogo Golem, and Sets 1 card before passing turn. T5 (Yuma): Yuma plays Zubaba Knight, which then allows him to Special Summon Kagetokage. He overlays both for Gagaga Samurai, and then uses Monster Reborn to bring back Gagaga Cowboy. Yuma uses both Xyz Monsters to make Number F0: Utopic Future. He then equips it with a new Equip Spell called "Xyz Power". Now when F0 battles an opponent's monster, that monster's effects are negated during the Battle Phase, and it also gains 1 additional attack per Battle Phase for each Xyz Monster attached to it as material. F0 attacks Kite's dragon, attempting to steal it. However, Kite responds with Galaxy Tyranno's effect to Special Summon it in Defense Position. He then flips Remove Brainwashing to prevent F0 from taking any of his monsters for the remainder of the Battle Phase. Yuma is forced to Set 2 cards and pass turn. T6 (Kite): Kite topdecks and summons Galaxy Wizard, then makes its Level become 8 for the turn. He overlays all three monsters for Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, whose effect negates F0 and Xyz Power's effects. Kite then has Neo Photon use its other effect to absorb both materials from F0, gaining 1000 ATK (it now has 5500 for the turn) and a second attack during this Battle Phase. Kite attacks for game, but Yuma responds with Mirror Mail, raising F0's ATK to 5500. Kite attempts to counter with Galaxy Shock, which would not only make Neo Photon go up to 7000 ATK but also nullify Mirror Mail's impact on F0. However, this gets thwarted by Yuma's Xyz Reflect counter trap, which negates Galaxy Shock and deals 800 damage to Kite (2400 LP left). Both Neo Photon and F0 are KO'd, but then Yuma and Kite each activate their respective copies of Xyz Double Back, reviving both monsters plus Gagaga Samurai (in Defense Position) for Yuma and Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon (in Attack Position) for Kite. Neo Photon attacks and destroys Gagaga Samurai, while the original Photon attacks F0, then uses its effect to banish both monsters. Kite then discards Dimension Wanderer to deal 3000 damage to Yuma and win the game.
