@Jack W The script was put together when you still had to get plays past the Lord Chamberlain before they could be performed. Hence the bowdlerisation, Joan Littlewood would have preferred authenticity to clean language. It’s not so bad Everton clean up there own crowds chants before playing them over the tannoy….

There's an alternative line to 'Wash me in the water that you washed your dirty daughter in', and it goes 'Wash me in the water that you washed the colonel's daughter in'. Usually sung when there were no officers present, I believe! My father told me he could remember his father singing this song when he (granddad) had had a few beers down the pub. A great film, if not necessarily to be taken as history.
