This is genius! Thank you. I was going to buy a utility sink and put the washer drain into that but this is a much cheaper and easier fix! Genius man, thank you!

Hello having same problem. Sorry, if this is a dumb question. But, What happens if you didn't use the small clear tubing? Wouldn't the water just backup a little bit into the adapters that you put on there?
@DoItYourselfandSave6 ай бұрын
Actually, yes - water will back up into the adaptor. But it provides more volume to catch water that would otherwise spill onto the floor. The tubing allows the water to drain into a tub or pail, compared to the drain pipe which doesn't offer additional volume.

Are you going to try for a permanent fix so you don’t have to use a drain tub ?
@DoItYourselfandSave Жыл бұрын
Yes - we purchased a brand new washer about a week ago. However, this fix worked for months on our old washer and can help someone in a pinch.
@chrisbaird2258 Жыл бұрын
So does the new washer not pump water out as fast? Our problem didn't happen until we got a new washing machine. It pumps the water out faster than our drain can handle.
@MandaMenopause10 ай бұрын
@@chrisbaird2258we have been having this same problem ever since we got our new Maytag top loader. Our house was built in 1959 so I’m also wondering if the drain pipe and/or field is clogged.

The problem is the slow drain not the washer

i need to do this exact setup! i have a question though... is there really need for the extra foot of 4" pipe above the drain hose? seems like if the water gets higher than the drain hose, it will just leak out. i don't have much space behind my washer because its a stackable with the dryer on top, so space is of the essence! it seems like you have the fitting over the standpipe about about 6 inches up with 6 inches of drain pipe sticking out of it. is that correct? thanks so much for this!
@DoItYourselfandSave9 ай бұрын
Yeah, you can get away with less length. Honestly I didn't cut it down because I have the room and frankly - I didn't want to make another cut on the pipe if I didn't have to. I'm not sure how much of the fixed drain pipe is covered but probably a good half a foot at least so that any water that doesn't go into the pipe has a chance to drain out via the clear plastic tube. Hope this helps!
@jefftripz53619 ай бұрын
Yup, only problem I have is that my standpipe is inside the wall... so I gotta figure out how to make adapters to outside the wall, then put this thing together!
@DoItYourselfandSave9 ай бұрын
Yikes - not good to have these kinds of leaks behind a wall. Hopefully it's drywall, in which case you should just remove it to gain access. Good luck --
@feelthebeatproductions5929 ай бұрын
yes, exactly. and it's happened once before - cause a TON of damage to the downstairs neighbors condo. i had no idea it was happening until the neighbor called to tell me her ceiling was leaking. i cleared the clog and thought it was fixed. a year later (now) its happening again. Hence, me finding your video and getting the pipe out of the wall!!!@@DoItYourselfandSave

Good idea I would have run. Y with tithe overflow pipe on the other y to catch the overflow so it all drains into the drain line vs having to dump a waste bucket
@DoItYourselfandSave Жыл бұрын
Good idea - I might try that
@feelthebeatproductions5929 ай бұрын
i like the idea of the bucket. in my case, if the bucket is fulling up, i know i have a clog in my standpipe and therefor know i have to clean it out.
@ryanlynch67 ай бұрын
how would i go about doing this if my drain pipe is 2in instead of 1 1/2?
@DoItYourselfandSave7 ай бұрын
Then you won't need a rubber "reducer"; you'll need a rubber connector instead - like this one: amzn.to/3veRdmz

🎉My drains are always plugging up. I have my top loader in the basement it empties straight into the sump pump with a colander undrr the hose to trap any pet hair, lint, etc. Im purchasing an all in one combo for the main part of the house because I have to have both ankles replaced, so walking down the steps will be off limits for awhile. I just know the stupid drain upstair is going to overflow at some point. I'm considering tapping into the drain line in the basement and also routing it to the sump pump to stop the problem before it starts. 😅😂
@DoItYourselfandSave9 ай бұрын
Be careful you don't overload your drain lines with too much water flow. The collander idea to trap pet hair is genius!
@brenten62269 ай бұрын
What do you mean by overloading it? Can you please explain more on what you mean? I do try to use the washer but don't use the dishwasher at the same time, etc. Is this kind of what you are referring to or something else? The colander has been a good choice and worked well because I have several fur babies. I have a pvc pipe running from the washer drain to the sump pump hole, and a 90 aimed into the colander. Lol, I guess we do what we gotta do.
@southernguy358 ай бұрын
That was happening at my house. I did snake it to a point and it bound up. It could be the pipe is collapsing partly because the sellers put the heat pump over the original cast iron pipe. This is a good idea in general if you have a finished basement to contain the water. Rather than cutting the large drain pipe, maybe you could simply put a Y in? Why couldn't you use a threaded fitting with a rubber gasket to seal to your base adapter and run that to an adapter with a barb and clamp. Then go to your large tub with a sump pump in it. You could put the lid on it and drill out a couple of holes. Then the sump pump would be attached to a hose going outside much like a condensate hose for a furnace. You could leave it in place and if there ever was a clog, it wouldn't flood things. I did see a small sump pump online for 44 bucks.
@DoItYourselfandSave8 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's an idea. Honestly I only have to dump the pail or tub once a week (if that), and our washer and dryer are in our garage and a few steps from the front yard. So for me it's really not a big hassle. Your idea is worthwhile, though!
@southernguy358 ай бұрын
@@DoItYourselfandSave , unfortunately, because my connection is right up against a brick wall, I don't think I can fit in a 4 inch drain pipe. I'm going to go with either 1 1/2 or 2" sleeve and a tee connection. The side have a reducer to drop it down to maybe 1/2 inch to run to a hose. If that works, I'll do the rest. What you're doing is a great idea to contain an overflow.
@southernguy358 ай бұрын
@@DoItYourselfandSave , you really don't have to walk it out into the yard. if it's clean water from the washer, dump it in the washer and replace the pail.

@DoItYourselfandSave Жыл бұрын
We replaced the washer, so that fixed it. But before, we only dumped the tub every 4-5 washloads. That was better than a flooded garage or basement floor, all day every day.

Place clear tube overflow to drain into floor drain or sink
@DoItYourselfandSave7 ай бұрын
Sure, if either is available. Since we have a slab floor and our washer is in the garage (no basement) those options don't work for us.
