Slapshots rely on a longer wind-up than snapshots and thus aren't very fitting for shootouts. They can be executed in shootouts, but the technique would be different than on lateral passes where the shooter rely on the goalie moving side-to-side. This is a bit like saying "Ovechkin's got such a bomb of a shot, why does he suck so much in the shootout" (he's so mediocre Wash didn't even use him here against Buff), well the way he fires those bombs simply doesn't translate to the shootouts and he's certainly no Mario Lemieux (or even a Kuznetsov) when it comes to a wider execution arsenal in-tight. But yes, I agree, Thompson's attempt was indeed godawful.

I hate the shootout. At one time, a penalty shot was exciting, now its just ridiculous way to end a hard fought hockey game.

Yeah? Those jerseys they had on are probably older than you. That was Buffalos jersey from 1996-2006. Its the alternates now.
