In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew boards a near-empty Washington Metro commuter train from Largo Town Center (Silver Line), and heads into Washington D.C. Exiting the Metro train system at McPherson Square Station, JOM kicks off a tour of many of D.C.'s well-known monuments, buildings, and sightseeing locations. Not the most comprehensive tour by any means, but enough to catch your attention and encourage a visit of your own!

From where you were in Georgetown at 23:49, you can take that gravel path 350 miles all the way to Pittsburgh, car-free! I highly recommend it if you are looking for a multi-day adventure. The 2 trails are called C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage

Chris, two years ago I rode the C&O all the way to Cumberland, Maryland. and then took the Amtrak back to DC. Due to a time crunch, ran out of time to head to Pittsburgh. But, thank you anyway! There are two videos here on the channel, but not in my newest style of filming.

Smart. When I moved here; I sold my car and bought more bikes. It’s less than 70 square miles and it doesn’t make sense to have a car in the area if you don’t venture out often.

Nice to see my home town. Thanks for the tour. That part of DC (monuments, museums and government buildings) is a world class tourist experience. You touched on some other parts of town but you could do several more videos of other areas that are equally as interesting but completely different. I’d love to see a tour of Rock Creek Park, or NE or NW or Anacostia or...anywhere the typical high school tour of DC doesn’t go.

NoVA/DC Nostalgia Tour part III - thanks JOM! Yep, next trip you want to head all the way down the NoVA side to Mt. Vernon. The number of training runs I've taken on that path prepping for the Marine Corps Marathon...good memories. I'm still laughing over the navigational miscue; done it a few times myself as a newcomer when driving, no worries. So many familiar sights and locales. Glad I had the opportunity to live there when I did, and it's so much more bike-friendly today.

At the end, that highway you were riding, that was the exact course used by the Tour de Trump for its DC stage in '89. And it was at that stage, that very highway, where Greg LeMond got his first good result in his long comeback from that hunting accident in '86. He placed third and all the top American riders were there, the 7-Eleven team and all. It was a crit, back and forth on that highway between the Pentagon and Rosslyn. And yeah, not sure you were supposed to ride on that shoulder, lol--probably should have been on the hiker/biker trail which runs along the water.

Used to work about a mile’s walk from Largo TC; way back when it opened. DC really is a neat city to bike thru. I won’t repeat what others have, but to say that you would have liked getting off the metro at Benning Rd then doing the Anacostia Trail or even biking thru SE DC and Capitol Hill. A bit less touristy than other areas but DC feel.

O man, I wish I would have been there with you from the start. Skip Metro, ride Central Avenue to just inside the Beltway, at McDonald's turn left, then another turn or two and up to Forestville, then straight to the District, down Pennsylvania Avenue and over the bridge and Capitol Hill is straight ahead. Or stay on Central to Old Central at Addison Road and then get on Benning Road and I always enjoyed riding H Street to the bridge that leads to the train station. So many ways, so many sights, glad you were there.

@@GravelCyclist Yeah, the District and that whole area--Northern Virginia and Maryland and all--is great for riding. And I've ridden from Georgetown--north up Wisconsin Avenue--all the way to the state of Pennsylvania, a good ride on a two-lane road north of the District through Maryland.

Good tour of DC, I would recommend the next time you park at the Greenbelt Metro, from there you can take the Anacostia Trail into dc it follows the Anacostia river most of the way. Its a nice ride. On the Virginia side of the Potomac, you can ride all the way to George Washington's house in Mt Vernon, from there you can take a water taxi back to Alexandria or over to MD. I was driving to Florida the day you filmed this. The Air And Space Museum in Virginia is called the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum, I work nearby there. In Georgetown you road right over the C&O canal bike trail , it goes all the way to Pittsburgh. OMG how did you end up on that road???? Ok you are not a local. lol

This is a question about your bike sizing. I might have heard or read in one of your bike reviews that you prefer a smaller size than what is recommended based on your height. With the smaller frame size, have you had any issues with toe overlap?

Toe overlap could be an issue, but that would generally be an issue only during low speed cornering, likely tight spots / u-turns. It all depends on the bike. Please remember, bike fitting is a personal issue, what works for me, may not work for you. IMHO, top tube length and head tube length are the most important numbers, everything else can easily be sorted (raise a seatpost, set back a saddle, etc). Good luck!

Hi Morgan! At just about all times I was around anybody, I wore a mask. I practiced social distancing at all times, and felt very safe. If you take the Metro, I suggest non-peak times, but it is markedly quieter now that people are working remote / Covid is around. I wore a mask the entire time I rode the metro. Just about everyone I spotted was wearing a mask, which really helps!
