“O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears”

I started writing this last year, back when I was in a different mood. I wondered if I should go through with it. But then again, if not now, then when?

What's funny is that the country rebelled over "no taxation without representation", and yet that's basically the entire basis of those who live there.

I'm a D.C. area native - family goes back in the city along way and this video really struck me at my core. The quote toward the end said it best: "To be in Washington is to live in the shadow of symbolism obscured by the screen of a necessary democratic narrative - that this place belongs to all but not to us."

I think despite the fact that this episode is a clear tribute, it's still not EFAP in spirit. EFAP is about film form and how movies use imagery to impart meaning. Between the Lines is about how certain media becomes iconic and deconstructing that iconography. This episode is more the latter than the former.

In many ways, Washington D.C. bares a few similarities to Canberra. Both were artificially constructed to form a neutral space for a capital, both are bereft of skyscrapers, and both lack an identity outside of the many monuments and historical buildings that adorn the metropolis. Canberra is a city in the middle of nowhere, where people go either to pursue politics or retire from anything else.

Brasília here in Brasil is pretty much the exact same thing since it was created to replace the old capital. Middle of nowhere, artificial, recognizable architecture, mostly politics. It also makes it the ONLY planned city in the country.

I am a foreigner, and the state of Washington D.C. has always felt weird to me. It's the capital of one of the wealthiest, most powerful nations in the world, but at the same time it is (relatively) low in population, small in economy yet also high in crime (again, relatively and in proportion to the aforementioned population and economy). It all feels so contradictory.

I mean, you always get crime in big cities, since they tend to have a lot of poverty as well. London and Paris, for example, are exactly the same
@GeoNeilUK

I think what it is about Washington is that it's a purpose built capital, like Ottawa, Canberra or Brasilia rather than an organic capital like London, Paris or Rome. If the USA had an organic capital, it would probably be New York, but many other cities would beg to differ I'm sure. South Yorkshire is the same on a WAY smaller scale, the biggest place there by far is Sheffield, but the county capital is actually Rotherham!

At 13:48 Capitol Hill is spelled "Catpiol" Hill. As a District resident, I wish you'd addressed our inequality more. For the record, I live in SW DC (I'm an ANC, even) and work two blocks from Ben's Chili Bowl at 14th and U. You're onto something with much of the lack of love for DC being linked to its predominantly black population. I once asked someone when he thought we'd get representation in Congress, and his answer was "When the population is 70% white." But there are so many aspects to it. We paid more in federal income tax per capita in 2015 than any state and by total, we paid more than Puerto Rico, Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska, and Montana combined ($24,826,721(gross collection in thousands) versus $25,583,750 for the District), yet we still have no say in something as simple as how our buildings look in residential neighborhoods. I love my city. It's beautiful, and like Mr. Smith, I get a catch in my throat every time I see the capitol from Union Station or my balcony. But the inequality, both among the wards and the people in general, never seems to be addressed in films.

Yeah I thought the same thing, it is a remarkably good music choice as that band kind of proves his point as well. There are a handful of DC bands that are famous in the DC area: Bad Brains and Fugazi being probably the ones that most obviously come to mind, that talk about both the ups and downs of living in DC and the DC area in their music from time to time and yet no one outside of the DC area really has ever heard that music, partially I feel because it doesn't really speak to the DC in our heads.

I will never forget the first time I came to Washington. I had spent half a year in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is the strangest place imaginable to a European. Looking out of the Greyhound bus windows and seeing houses, one next to the other, with sidewalks everywhere and buses and knowing there was a railway under the streets moved me almost to tears.

My sister immigrated to D.C. as a nurse so when I go to America for vacations I always find myself biking around the city. Its such a pretty place to walk around too, my first visit was basically a dream because most of the people I met were so kind. I especially love going to Chinatown to eat before I go on my way wandering around again. But now the current political landscape has made it depressing to go around, especially near the white house. There is this deep sense of sadness and hostility, since the majority of D.C. natives ARE minorities and immigrants. You can feel it when you drive around the city, something in its soul has died.

I LOVE the intro to D.C. in John Adams. It's so undignified. Like the entire series, it's trying to bring America's mythologized establishment back to a human scale, even at the cost of some historical accuracy (though the D.C. shown here is accurate). And period accents are extremely cool, too.

Grew video as always Kyle. Another roadblock to filming in DC is the complicated network of jurisdictions. I once worked on a miniseries that shot there. For a scene of two actors crossing the street from the Supreme Court to the Capitol I had to negotiate with five different agencies. One for the court, one for the sidewalk in front of the court, one for the street, one for the sidewalk across the street, and one for the Capitol. Still it’s one of my favorite places I’ve filmed. Done so twice.

I have a story to share with you all: when my family moved overseas, we took our dvds with us. What we didn't realize is that nearly all of them were region coded so that they couldn't be played outside North America. Since we were only there temporarily, we didn't want to buy a bunch of Asian coded dvds. So for the longest time, the only DVD my family was able to watch at leisure was Night at the Museum 2, which now holds a special place in our hearts. Thanks Kyle for pausing your monologue for that precious line, "Why these aren't real rubies at all!"

I totally can see where you're coming from, Kyle. I lived in the DC area for four years and couldn't help but notice all these background inconsistencies once I became more acquainted with the cityscape. In fact, it took me a full year living there to finally get around to checking out the National Mall, solely because my sister was visiting and wanted to see the sights. I never put together the catacomb imagery in regards to the subway system, but that in and of itself was by far the most efficient public transit I've seen thus far. Dupont Circle would eventually become a favorite hang-out for me, but U-Street eventually also became a big hotspot, especially the 9:30 Club. And by far, E-Street cinema was the best place to catch new movies in the city.

As someone who's been to DC twice (First time on a class trip, so we got to go into the white house and up into the Washington monument) being able to recognize pretty much all of the settings in that game was part of what made it my favorite. I'm not from DC, but NoVA (that place where when describing where you live the outsiders you just say DC because it's easier). Still I can see these effects and I've always thought about how you never see anyone living there on TV/movies despite being able to see it if you take a step past the touristy spots. I guess the area where I live kind of perpetuates that (commuters and all).

I visited DC a few years ago and never visited the government stuff (aside from the Embassy open houses and their swag). You have so many museums, so many bars. I now live in the DC metro region for grad school and it is this weird place because DC is only a few miles from where I live yet it is a 30 minute drive or an hour metro ride away. Without your own car you get stuck in not just the town you live in but a two mile radius because to try and escape it is difficult because of traffic, poor suburban planning, and highways cutting through residential areas.

There is only one film you will have seen of my home city: Trainspotting. It's a fairly accurate portrayal. Despite only having one scene shot there. For all our local fears of being like your DC, a city seen though it's postcard landmarks, it's funny that our most famous film is so grounded. I don't think there is one shot of its volcanic history. Films about Edinburgh are a testament to passion. People from Leith love Leith and so it has three films about it. Morningside is the same to a lesser extent, so The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Hell even Newcraighall has an art house film trilogy. The Southside on the other hand doesn't have its artists. Yet.

re 1:56 My hometown Uppsala actually has a law (or maybe restriction is a better word) about how high you can build. Aside some some notable exceptions like the smokestacks of the trash burning power plant and the new police headquarters (called the scandal house for breaking this limit) every building has to low enough to allow a clear view of the Cathedral and Castle. A not so subtle reminder of who ran the show. On a side note there still to this day canons placed at the Castle aiming straight at the Cathedral to make sure the archbishop doesnät get any funny ideas.

Hoping this doesn't sound like I'm being an obnoxious know-it-all. As a fellow DC/Marylander, I had two things to add (also, cool to see you do this whole thing!). 2:00 - The two big myths you always hear are that no building is allowed to block the line-of-sight to the capital rotunda, or that no building can be higher than the Washington Monument and/or the capital. Both of those are false. However, there is a law making it so that no building can be no higher than the width of the adjacent street. That's one of the reasons why addresses like Pennsylvania Avenue or Massachusetts Avenue have become so coveted - not only is it well situated, but wider streets means that you can build taller buildings. The height restrictions were passed during the 'City Beautiful' era of the city's architecture (that you brought up), when DC was rebuilt to rival the European capitals. That was also the same period when you saw a lot of DC's monumental architecture, which is where the idea of rivaling the European capitals becomes most obvious, because some buildings are literally build to show-up specific structures in Europe. For example, there is Federal Triangle and Whitehall in London, the Library of Congress and the British Library, the National Cathedral and Notre Dame or Westminster Abbey, and Union Station and all the big London and Paris train stations. 2:10 - Okay, this is super picky, but technically the building is referred to as the 'Capitol' with an 'o', while the city is known as the 'capital' with an 'a'. The term 'Capitol' comes from the temple of Zeus in Rome (it also sat on the highest hill, had a very large dome, and so with DC's neoclassical influences it's not hard to see where the connection came from). But yeah, that's being really picky, I know. 5:20 - Not a correction but before DC was picked as the site for the capital city, there were two cities already there. One was Georgetown and the other was Alexandria. And a random note: not sure how accurate this is, but I've heard that the reason why movies are never filmed on location at DC is because of the home rule issue - basically DC can't offer film subsidies like neighboring states can PS - cool video! DC is such a beautiful city. And there's so much more to it than just the mall and penn quarter. I wish people were more familiar with everything else there.

Hah! Sounds a bit like Canberra. Australia couldn't decide between Melbourne and Sydney so we made Canberra. There's not much there outside of Parliament but a few monuments and a museum.

Maybe it's not quite the example one is looking for, but my favorite place I saw when visiting Washington was the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I've been all over the world and even on vacation I still like to attend mass. I can tell you that that Church is the most beautiful I've ever been to. Granted I'm probably biased and I haven't been to Notre Dame or the Vatican yet.

Very insightful! I'm from the DC area (Northern Virginia to be exact), and even I didn't know some of these facts. What are your opinions about Washington DC's local film industry???
