The sounds you hear when a train is decelerating are the sounds of the dynamic braking system on each truck of the rail cars.

anyone know what causes the shift in pitch at 0:26 ? I've always wondered why these trains do that as they're stoppping
@SkyKid84928 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Garrison actually I asked a buddy of mine that works in the metro yard near union station where they work on and clean trains and he said because of the type of metal that the wheels and the track are made of thy make a certain sound at certain speeds. when metal rubs together you get some weird noises like another example would be the brake rotors of a monster truck, when a monster truck driver gets on the brakes hard and the rotors are hot from him or hear applying the brakes a lot like back to back during a freestyle event you'll hear a winding sound if you listen closely
@SkyKid84928 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Garrison yeah haha the newer ones have that sound but it isn't very loud I hear that sound everyday and it's one of those things that is somewhat satisfying

You should've heard the SILENCE back when they had asbestos brakepads. It was eerily quiet. Metro, when it works, is a great way to get around.

Awesome train system. Jacksonville, Florida could sure use one like this because it's the biggest city in Florida. But all we have is a people mover that just goes around downtown. People say it goes from nowhere to nowhere.

@MikeFromMaine3 жыл бұрын
Do you still live there?
@drcobol200016 жыл бұрын
The sounds come from the dynamic braking system. This system turns the electric motors into giant resistors that send current back into the power grid and at the same time provide braking without the need for pneumatic brakes and pads on the wheel trucks.

i believe the sounds come from devices called GTO thyristors, which feed pulses of current to the traction motors. according to wikipedia: "the noise is produced by the oxygen in the air vibrating as the magnetic field changes (oxygen is magnetic whereas nitrogen is not)."

it's a 3k, because the buzzing was loud and more pronounced. Additionally the station was Ballston since you can see the orange on the destination sign on the departing train. If you look closely right before the 1k pass the cameraman you can see the station name on the wall

@MikeFromMaine7 жыл бұрын
Yeah sometimes you have to wait unfortunately.
@rockvilleraven10 жыл бұрын
Don't bother riding Metro on the weekends, there is single tracking, long waits between trains and delays. I think that they would be better off just closing it on Saturdays and Sundays and do all the work then, if they can't provide reliable service at that time.
@rockvilleraven8 жыл бұрын
Timothy Garrison Only because it's Cherry Blossom month that there's no trackwork. You don't want to scare away the tourists with single tracking and 25 minute headways, do you?
@MikeFromMaine3 жыл бұрын
That's true.
@Baron2yahoo13 жыл бұрын
@SASAussie It's true, your actual response time will vary, but since you based your opening statement on it; it was one of the first things that provoked your response. General speaking, I don't believe there is a perfect system currently in America. I'm ok with some delay, but I agree with you as far as handling the maintenance. I don't believe all of the metro employees were necessarily black though. Including board members??? Even so, inefficiency can occur in every race regardless of origin.

@SASAussie I was waiting on your reply, so I thought if I did something a little irregular it would provoke an immediate response. It worked right??? :) But I too am independent with affiliation, although I may seem more liberal, but from my first comment you automatically assumed I was. People with radical views for one side, greatly oppose the other in this fashion. You claim no political affiliation, yet demonstrate what's common for a conservative agenda. I just didn't like your train rants.
