Washington, DC vs Virginia: ultimate showdown. Which is better?

As a native Virginian, I’ve never wanted to live in dc. Even though I work there. 😂 VA traffic is awful, but as a commuter to and from DC daily-it’s all bad. The National Mall is beautiful. I always say VA is clean, quiet and safe. Except for the helicopters. We get those too (all the military installations and the pentagon and the airports-planes). Great video.

The traffic in the DMV is horrible. And don't let it rain. Everybody decides to drive that day even though they take the subway on the regular. And the helicopters can be annoying, but they are there for a number of reasons: the White House, the military bases, news, and law enforcement. I can't wait to see the vid on MD vs DC. Especially the population aspect. I think just in the surrounding area of DC and MD, there should be a high black population, but I know you will be looking at the entire state.

Great video! As a DC resident I do feel more safe in Virginia, but it is just so cool to live in DC. I think it’s a lot more beautiful than Virginia - with all the townhouses, monuments, and architecture it feels like a beautiful European city. Other than old town, Virginia architecture doesn’t have much character (in my opinion). Also, the mix of city and natural beauty in places like KIingle valley and Rock Creek Park is world class and absolutely gives Virginia a run for its money. Also, another nuance is that crime is far from evenly distributed in the district. I know lots of people who move into trendy buildings in Noma, U Street, or Navy Yard complaining about crime. Well, if safety is a top priority, D.C. west of the park including DuPont, most of downtown, and the mall are all very safe areas. That’s probably half the city.

I think Northern VA is much different from VA as a whole. I lived in Fairfax County for 15 years and worked in both DC & VA. I never wanted to live in DC because of crime and so crowded. VA has more natural beauty but NW & SW DC have architectural beauty.

Alexandria, Fairfax, Arlington, Springfield. People commute from further places in VA. Just depends on what you’re looking for and how far out you want to be.

Very nice review! I am so thankful and blessed to have grown up in the DMV. lol But that traffic... the main reason I had to venture out to other states. It used to take me and hour and half each way to work from North Potomac to Ballston... that was too much of my day sitting behind the wheel. I can only image now. ;-)

Again you can’t compare the state to a district 😂😂. Yes in percentage the black population is high in DC. But compare that to the numbers of blacks in Petersburg Virginia which is 76%. That 20% in Virginia are at least 2M black residents in Virginia compared to DC. Northern Virginia isn’t the only place in Virginia. Richmond has more black residents than white residents vs what you showed for Dc

I prefer living in VA. The taxes are lower, the neighborhoods are safer, plus I actually get congressional representation. I can do all the fun stuff in DC and then take a train home.

I lived in the Washington metropolitan area all my life (nearly 64 yrs.). The host of this video only talked about Arlington, Alexandria, and a little about Fairfax Co. There was no mention whatsoever of Loundoun Co, Prince Williams Co., Stafford Co. and Fauquier Co. despite the immense history and beauty of these areas which are a part of northern Virginia. I agree with the host that traffic can be a bit hectic at times, but significant improvements have been made to rectify the problem on I-395, I-95, I-66, as well as numerous other routes throughout the northern Virginia area. Significant improvements will also to be made to northern Virginia's transportation system in the future. None of the schools in the Washington metro area compares to the K--12 schools in Northern Virgina. The host also did not explain that northern Virginia is crawling with hi tech jobs, especially in Loundoun, Fairfax, and Prince Willians cos.

That's correct...this is a KZbin video, not a documentary. I could speak for months on the different benefits/drawbacks of the various areas. Also, when most people are moving to the DMV, they want to be in Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax. Most of the questions I get in my email and DM are about those areas specifically. So, that is what I addressed. This video is meant to serve as a general introduction, not an exposition of Virginia. Also, in a previous video I intentionally didn't discuss the school system because I am not familiar with them. I don't have children, so I don't touch on things I have no expertise in. Once the improvements to the transportation system are complete then a discussion will be had. But, in the meantime, traffic sucks. But, thanks for watching and adding your commentary.

I say Great vídeo. Im in DC really racking my brain about if I should move out to VA. There are certain scholarships that DC high school grads get for college the reason I want to stay here and I’m thinking of returning to college myself. I’m glad you touched on North VA because I still want to be city. Having issues in DC right now finding affordable housing. Most of the affordable housing are located in questionable areas.. in DC.. The city in some parts are dirty .. homelessness ppl everywhere etc etc.. I could go on but thanks for explaining the taxes part for VA.. really it’s a toss up.. still a little confused.
