If you read Ron Chernow’s very in-depth biography of Washington, Mary was not a nice lady, nor were her reasons for keeping George out of the navy to protect him. Mary was extremely concerned with social status and money, and naval officers didn’t make as much as other branches. Relations with the British were fairly decent at the time George was looking to join up, he wanted to follow his older brother who he really loved and looked up to. Unfortunately his brother passed away when George was about 15, he contracted tuberculosis. Mary and George didn’t have a good relationship and it was often said that Mary was considered a difficult, nasty person even in those times.

If you read Martha Saxton’s book “The Widow Washington” it does a good job of undoing some of the damage that Chernow’s book does. While it’s true that Mary Washington was not the best mother in the world, it gives Mary Washington some much needed back story that Chernow simply doesn’t give her. She suffered a lot in her early years, and while that does not excuse later bad behavior, the book paints her in a way that makes her a lot less cold and unforgiving than how Chernow, and many other male authors, would have her come across.

I think she was probably just lonely, and complaining got her attention. Also Washington was probably a very busy man, him showing up to bring her money may have been just a way for her to see him. Either way, considering she lived in relative comfort, I doubt money or slandering her son was the only reason she acted like this

It did change how they acted. They were brought up in an entirely different society, what seems right and wrong to you is likely very different from someone of that period other than maybe the basic rights and wrongs. This applies to judging historical figures for things that were normal to do then. What if in 100 years people realize smartphones have an irreversible effect on our magnetic field and then in 300 more years people look back on us, would our ignorance be excusable?

He also gave her 2 slaves to handle everything in terms of cooking and cleaning. She was a horrible woman. And the part about her preventing him from joining the British navy was not out of the goodness of her heart or out of some patriotic spirit…British naval officers got paid relatively little and she was so obsessed with money and how others saw them that she would have died from shame if he was just a lowly naval officer. Not a very nice lady. It’s true she kept his father’s inheritance from not only George, but from his siblings as well. George may not have needed it but they damn sure did

Honestly, intentions don't mean much to me if your mom ain't capable of acting reasonably towards her own son at least. Having lived isn't an excuse to try to destroy the reputation of the very son keeping you not just living, but living in luxury by o much making them look like a greedy scrooge. I feel like she only put on the facade of loving him to look good in the history books as all we have are records now, and to keep the money from her son coming.

"She really loved George". But kept his inheritance and used it for herself for 19 years! 5 kids with an inheritance each that she kept for herself. And constantly blackmailed and extorted her own son. That is the worst mom in history.
@averycheesypotato
@averycheesypotato 12 күн бұрын
To be fair though, she had other kids to raise. And while George could go off and have a long and successful career, her options were very limited given the time period they lived in. Besides, George Washington was pretty tight fisted with money himself. He would move slaves around to avoid emancipation laws, so he would not lose of them to the freedom they had earned

Since he was bone of her eldest surviving children, she kept and tried to keep her son by her side. Including trying to butt in his affairs when he clearly didn't ask his mom to do it. She was a nosy, slandering mom but at least she kept him out of certain situations, like not letting him join the British navy.
