I'm with you. I am a very fit, 70 year old runner. I also work on general strength and agility. I can't come close to doing the stand test. I am naturally very inflexible, which comes from genetics. There are things I can do to increase flexibility, but I don't think I could have done this test even when much younger.

@@randystebbins5733 to you and JimGraham: do not give up. These exercises sometimes requires more wit than strengh or flexibility. I used to exercise in aerial silks: I learned that it is not all a question of arm strengh but of coordination of all the body. It's interesting to note the position of the legs and lean forwards a little bit to get some impulse.

This is more about coordination and flexibility than muscular and bone strength. As someone who loves doing weighted squats, going down in a controlled movement was no problem for me. But getting up, when I first was introduced to this test, I found myself being confused about how to use my body, and coordinate my muscles to get up without using an arm or knee for support. I think it's hyperbolic to say that this is a predictor of age, given that people with perfectly good muscular and skeletal strength as well as coordination can still fail at this, especially the getting up part.
@yeseniarobles4289
@yeseniarobles4289 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s more about testing the cerebellum since it’s the one in charge of coordination of movement and balance. When it’s weak the body, along with your cerebrum, has to think and plan how to move, whereas the cerebellum is instant action because it knows it’s possible. Once the cerebellum loses strength ataxia comes into play.

@@bonbonbonfire Unless you've actually read about the test beyond a cursory glance at Wikipedia, you may have failed to understand that the extent to which a test result can be generalized depends very much on the conditions under which the test was made, and what it was made to measure. The test was originally aimed at the elderly or older individuals (which is why the original research sample consisted of individuals above 50). Do you know why? Because a low score indicate individuals with potentially compromised mobility, muscular strength and balance. Those things are of particular concern to *_older individuals_* because it determines the extent to which they will require assistance or physical aid, in performing daily tasks, without which, they would be at significant risk of injuring themselves through falling because of loss of balance. That is where the risk factor lies. Contrast that context, to how the test has often been talked about in public discourse and the media, where the test is then used as some kind of *general predictor* for even those outside of the parameters of the original test subject. This test, when applied to younger individuals, is a questionable predictor of age or longevity because inability to perform the test may be due to coordination rather than actual muscular weakness or motor function. We've seen plenty of examples of young individuals failing the test. But no scientist worth their degree will tell you that if you, as someone that is younger (than the original test subjects at least)fail the test, that it means you're more likely to die than those who passed it. You know why? Because for younger, healthier individuals, the mortality risk that is associated with falling is less than those of the elderly. Younger individuals tend to be more robust, recover better from injuries, and the injuries themselves are less likely to cause permanent or fatal damage. Another interesting thing to note was that there has been different versions of the sit and rise test over the years. One of them included a much easier version where you sit and rise from a chair as opposed to sitting and rising from the floor. This test, according to certain scientists, tend to be more efficient in actually predicting muscular strength and balance because it takes away the more complicated coordination necessary to perform the sitting and rising from the floor, and if an elderly is unable to do even this simple sitting and rising from a chair, it is indicative of serious muscular and balance problems. Again though, risk factor will tend to be higher for the elderly than for younger individuals. Context matters. The way the test results have been generalized to be "applied" beyond its original context or intention is what I was referring to as someone that is very familiar with research methodology in general.

I lost the ability to do this after I had bilateral knee surgeries (one 7 months ago, the other 2 months ago, I'm 23 years old). But I'm trying to be positive and regain this ability as well. And many people say you have to be flexible to do this, but I'm as flexible as I was before the surgeries (can sit on heels, touch the ground while standing, can sit cross-legged on the floor, can almost do a split...etc.) and when I try to stand up without my hands, my knees just don't work. I can't even begin to stand up (and no, I had no muscle atrophy before or after the surgeries).

@scottie89901
@scottie89901 Ай бұрын
Working out all the time does not equate to having good mobility skills. On the extreme end, bodybuilders tend to have shorter lifespans which is thought to be due to increased stress on their heart and injury risk. Mobility and functional strength both degrade with age, and developing these when young will help with maintaining the ability to live independently when old.

This sitting-rising test is, in my opinion, not really a great method for a one size fits all test for longevity. People with a history of knee problems will have a hard time with this exercise. Realistically, someone under 35 should be able to do the exercise if they are even in moderately good shape. People over 60, on the other hand, will have a much harder time performing the full squat from a legs-crossed position due to loss of muscle mass and changes in mobility/range of motion in their joints. Being able to rise from a low stool or perform a full squat, for someone over sixty, is much more doable for a senior, and therefore, a much better indicator. I would not recommend that seniors try this maneuver because it could, possibly, cause a knee injury. On the other hand, if you are under 35 and can't perform this exercise, it could well be an indicator of poor health/longevity risks, especially things like being overweight and lack of exercise which could lead to muscle loss. Moderate exercise as we age is extremely important to maintain function in our muscles and joints.

You don't need flexibility past what you need for things you do in your life. It's like asking a 10 stone(140 lb) man to deadlift 500 lbs and then saying he's not fit because he can't do it. Does getting on your knees before standing up count?
@jzk2020
@jzk2020 5 жыл бұрын
There's a technique to it. After you get down and you're sitting like an "Indian", then try to turn one of your knees around so you get into "take a knee" / "Colin Kapernick" position and you'll be able to get up from there with ease.

that's exactly my thought. Using a knee costs you one point. the goal is 8 or higher. Why take a risk when you can have stability? That's the hidden longevity in the test...are you sane enough to not hurt yourself needlessly?

Genetics is by far the greatest indicator of life expectancy. Obviously exercise, clean eating and staying away from cigarettes, drugs and alcohol will help along the way but this test is hogwash.

@mastersnet18

@@bonzijones4223 yea of course doctors would tell you that. Their only purpose (at least in the U.S.) is to prescribe drugs or suggest surgery. If they don’t prescribe enough drugs they lose their jobs. So if they tell you genetics causes all problems, it makes it easier to sell you drugs. If you cut out the middle man and look at the research itself, it’s clear genetics are a very small part of it. It’s mostly lifestyle. Sure, some people have bad luck with genetics and may get certain conditions easier, but lifestyle is often still a big factor. My anecdotal evidence has shown me lifestyle is the biggest factor, regardless of genetics.

Flexibility and agility are tested here. Those who do poorly are more likely than others to injure themselves in a fall. Many elderly people die from falls and other accidents. It's not the injury directly, but the blood clots and other things that are triggered by the injury. Also, if you are old and have thin bones, you will have more damage from the fall than a younger person would. It's not a test of cardio risk or cancer risk -- nothing like that. But it is a good test of the risk of injury and death due to injury as people age.
