As winter approaches, the United States is grappling with a jaw-dropping surge in the number of novel coronavirus infections. More than 288,000 Americans have been killed by a virus that public health officials now say can be spread through airborne transmission. The virus spreads most commonly through close contact, scientists say. But under certain conditions, people farther than six feet apart can become infected by exposure to tiny droplets and particles exhaled by an infected person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in October. Those droplets and particles can linger in the air for minutes to hours.
To visually illustrate the risk of airborne transmission in real time, The Washington Post used a military-grade infrared camera capable of detecting exhaled breath. Numerous experts - epidemiologists, virologists and engineers - supported the notion of using exhalation as a conservative proxy to show potential transmission risk in various settings. The highly sensitive camera system detects variations in infrared radiation that are not visible to the naked eye. The technology is more typically used in military and industrial settings, such as detecting methane gas leaks in pipelines. In 2013, it was deployed by law enforcement during the 20-hour manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers. But fitted with a filter that specifically targets the infrared signature of carbon dioxide, the camera can be used to map in real time the partial path of the nearly invisible particles we exhale. Watch the video to learn more.

@@barbmills8609 First, masks are worn for the concern of others, suppress/decelerate horizontal propagation, giving the standard 6" separation the best chances under varied conditions. Second, The size you gave for COVID-16 is COVID by itself, and you are assuming it can survive airborne- in the _truest definition of "airborne". Vapor size- COVID being surrounded by body-fluid [micro]droplet, is within N95 capabilities ... but then you are assuming said micro-droplet wouldn't have evaporated (hence, deactivated the COVID "molecule") enroute to another's ACE2 receptor. _Droplet-encased_ COVID is the only thing preventing this pandemic from being a total catastrophe ... and the reason it's _still ending up the runaway spread-rate we are suffering/dying under needlessly? @@spicetreks you're both right. Mask that are not n95 do help protect you and help limit the spread of Covid. He is also right that it does not PREVENT the spread of Covid even in conjunction with 6 feet separation. The pure fact is, is that mask and social distancing REDUCE the spread of Covid which in turn reduce infection rate and death rates. But mask especially mask below N95, do not prevent anything.

@@kyleherndon7746 STOP misrepresenting the science - you and Barb Mills above. The N95 and similar masks are TESTED using 0.3 micron particles and need to be 99.97% efficient at filtering them to be certified. This does NOT mean that magically they stop filtering at 0.3 microns so your argument is misleading and dangerous. It's like saying your car brakes were tested at 60 mph and if you go 61 they will fail. What idiocy. Also, most respiratory droplets are larger than your magical 0.3 um cutoff. N95 respirators and others even more protective are highly effective in both directions due to physical and electrical properties. They significantly reduce the risk of viral transmission. Don't pretend you know the science - you don't. Wear a freakin' mask or we'll never get out of this mess.

This is actually the worst video I’ve seen on the matter, masks only prevent droplets, the virus is 1 micron and the holes in the mask are 56 microns (and don’t even think about the places the mask clearly doesn’t cover properly). Mask or no mask, the virus is entering and exiting your nose/mouth, the only difference is the direction the air is spreading. The virus can linger in stale air for days. If you’re standing behind a mask wearer in a queue, you’re more likely to breathe in their air as opposed to facing them directly. The post said it was a Military Grade IR Camera. It's thermal imaging. Its not necessarily Infrared at all. You can pic up some Military IR sensitive night vision and it's not going to show the color coded images like in that post. It's just thermal. And military grade isn't all that celebratory either lol.

Somewhat true. IR ranges from near IR like what night vision and tv remotes use, to mid and far IR which is used for thermal imaging. It is all Infrared Imaging.

It's been proven that toilet water and matter get airborne when flushed and spread up to 6-10 feet in diameter but many people still leave the lid up when they flush and most public toilets have no lid at all. So if breathing and touching everyone's poop and spreading it all over the place isnt a big deal then I'm not too worried about coronavirus.
@heatheraimz1
@heatheraimz1 Жыл бұрын
COVID can be spread through fecal material. Avoiding public bathrooms whenever possible, because flushing contaminates the air, will help you avoid getting the virus. No... it wasn't discussed. But that shouldn't stop you from limiting your exposure to a potentially debilitating virus.

Well, same with any _respiratory_ virus; for example, influenza. The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy say this about the 2020 influenza season in Australia: "The Southern Hemisphere had a very light flu season in 2020, with Australia seeing only 315 cases over its winter, down 99.8% from the 130,000 cases seen in most years. " It seems that the preventative measures that many in Australia are taking to fight Covid are working to subdue other respiratory viruses. We should have done this years ago to help prevent influenza.

That’s the answer. Has to be. It will only be a small inconvenience. Basically, you’ll have about 30 min to shop before having your bottle changed. Oh, I believe the refilling equipment is only about $40k. This VIRUS BS NEEDS TO STOP NOW!

My only issue is it seems like the video is suggesting that only “properly fitted” (N95) masks are really useful in preventing spread overall. At one point the video mentions that a “properly fitted” mask can filter some of the particles, seeming to imply that a surgical mask filters nothing. I don’t think that’s accurate, and it’s contrary to what the CDC says. Weren’t surgical masks said to be like 73% effective way back in March? Even cloth masks are largely beneficial, and you can put filters in them.
