Awesome old car, and great videos. Please don’t cut it. There’s plenty of rough old cars to chop up. Previous owner was under the impression that it was getting restored, and going to a museum.😀👍

Chad - look closely at the windshield in comparison to the rest of the glass. Halfassed Customs chopped a Hudson like this and he discovered too late how small the windshield looked after he lowered the the top. Hudson cars were designed with a higher cowl making the windshield appear smaller. That is a feature that set Hudson apart from the competition. Brent had to do a lot of restructuring to make it look proportional. I believe Chad is opening a huge can of worms.

For sure, I can see that happening. It’s an old story when you’re customizing cars……… sometimes less is more, as far as looks are concerned anyway. I’d suggest taking a ¾ view photo of the roof and hood and cutting & chopping the photo to get a preview before cutting any metal. ~ John B

Once Chad gets something in his head he does it, it doesnt matter to him if he makes a car that everybody else hates, it just doesnt matter to him, he already has a shed of Frankenstein's to prove it. Which by the way were built during his T.V. show, so they werent built by him alone.

Yup. Instead of a full chop many would only pancake the roof on these as the windshield was small enough. The side windows would look weird being smaller then the huge bubble roof above them, the 4 door Hudson had weird roof proportions, they were aiming for more visibility and lowered the side glass down from the cowl line.

Square headed screws were invented in Canada and the inventor took the idea to Henry Ford since it was such a perfect idea for powered drivers. Henry was so impressed, he wanted in...but he wanted to buy the idea and then market himself to the rest of the world. This is why Robertson-headed screws have remained a Canadian-only product for about the last century.

Its been sitting for 40 yrs with the guy who loves it more then anyone and never did the work so hard to believe people making these comments will.chad doesn't have a ton of options of old cars like we do in the states,it is a 4 door car! After your Aussie trip I was very proud of you. Now you are telling us that if we are not happy with chopping the top we can buy it for he absurd price of ten thousand. I restore cars and trucks as drivers and your estimates for things like glass, brakes and tires is totally crazy. Tires from Coker are about $250 each. Brake shoes are about $20 an axle from NAPA. Flex lines are $15 and you would need three. The windshield is flat glass at about $200. The old man who owned the car was very happy that you were going to respect his old car. So now I can predict that you will chop the top and then forget about the car. I think you are a sheet metal wizard and did a superb job on the 33 in Toronto and watch all of your shows but today I have lost faith. I won’t watch the the remaining videos on the Hudson.

4:20am here in Australia! I have been thinking about the Hudson... rather than chop the top, go the other way. I have a very dear friend who is crippled by arthritis, spending her days in a chair. Her husband is doing a vehicle with a lift in the back, anchor points inside for her chair, etc. The Hudson would be a perfect candidate with the lack of wheel arches and flat floor to create a mobility vehicle for people in a wheelchair . So the opposite of a chop! Lift the back from the Front door pillar (A pillar?) to provide height, with windows for the person in the chair to see out. Access from the rear via a ramp. Swing the back up from the high point on the roof (window included.) Problem: structural integrity of the rear parcel tray will need to be altered (but you can do that I think.) My point: people in chairs deserve a cool ride too.

Further thoughts: ... donate the car to a charity (MS Society, or the like) for their fundraising activities from the supporters and subscribers to your channel... call for donations as you build it, a small amount from each to cover your costs with the leftover donations as a cash amount to the charity. You could write on the side: Donated by supporters of Bad Chad (etc.)... The charity could take it to car shows etc. to raise awareness for their cause. You could make a big deal of the build. I am sure you would get a lot of people willing to help out with a small amount (or a big amount!) $10 each, to ... the sky is the limit ($100, $1000...???) people do give to a good cause ( at least here in Australia.) It might be a risk, but one worth taking I think.

You explained that really well man. To me it’s not restorable unless you have a deep pocket and helluva time. It would have to be a nut and bolt restoration, and it’s easy for someone to say do this because it’s not coming out their pocket, let’s face it half the people on here could not afford to restore that.

Chad everyone has their own ideas what they would do with the car and if everyone liked the same thing there would be no hot rods no lowered vehicles are rat rods with big motors in them. I do what I like to my cars and trucks and some people likes what I do and some don't but I do what I like and I realize that everyone has their own ideas about what they do and I respect that but I think they should respect what you want and I'm all for what you do for you are a man after my own heart. As I watch this I can't help thinking that I would shoot a few side shots and do a virtual chop in PhotoShop. If you put tape on the the width you want to chop (before the photos) , then just move the top down in Photoshop that much, you can get an idea what it will look like, rinse and repeat until you find the right look. Good luck and take care.

The older fellow who sold the car discussed his interest in preserving the car in a restored state and placed somewhere like a museum. From that video, Jolene agreed it should be preserved, as is, as well, I'm guessing, to honour the original owners desire. That said, Brad has a vision, not only to preserve a car like this but also give it a new lease on life. I completely understand his choice to make the car something that lives and breathes (and drives). It's nice to think all cars of this era cold be fully restored and placed in a museum but it makes more sense, in my view, to build a car that has a life on the road. We weren't privy to the decision making after the sale, nor should we be but I'm thinking it was a case of get the car fixed and moving, with the vision to modify , which is the decision of the present owner, despite (and I'm sure respectfully) going against the wishes of the previous owner to have it stored in a museum.

I have come to the conclusion that Chad is a metalworking artist and not really interested in building anything that will actually ever see the road. Take it to the 50% point and push it in the barn to rust. But I guess that is what you get when you are trying to produce an hour of content every day. Your car though, do what you want.😊

Personally before I’d start cutting I’d take dead on side photos of it with what I call a chop ruler taped to the side. A chop ruler has alternating black & white one inch squares and can be used as a ruler later to determine your most pleasing roof height. Then I’d cut up that side photo and move the roof up and down till I was happy with the look. Sometimes it helps to leave the altered photo where you keep seeing it during the day to really decide you like it. Once your real happy with the look cut the chop ruler out of a photo to measure the amount of drop. It’s obviously helpful to have at least 4 of the same photos to cut up. I like your sedan delivery idea much better than a chopped 4 door. ~ John B

Good idea. I believe there are several tools available to help facilitate lowering the top. A builders level is very handy along with various computer programs. I lowered the roof on a 33 Ford pick up and the first time I drove it I knew I screwed up. I guess if you don’t drive the cars, it doesn’t matter though.

Chad, I feel with complete you can chop a roof. How about doing a sectioned video? Not just cutting off of the bottom but a real section by removing horizontal section from the center of the body. One of my favorites in the early 1950s was a 1951 shoe box Ford 2 door coupe with a four inch section. I think a lot of your viewers would gain some traffic knowledge from such a procedure.

Chad - Don't do a top chop on that Hudson. The windshield will end up too small. You have two ways you can chop it. 1. Do a body chop. A body chop will still let you keep the vehicles look. or 2. Leave you windshield and lower the back of the top down to the height of the windshield.

Dual sidemount spares would look sweet on that. Have you thought about, or do you start by just taking a 11/2 to 2 inch chop out 1st, then stand back to see what it looks like. And then work your way up to say 3 or 4 inches ? or do you just usually take it all out in one fell swoop.

I like custom. But I wouldn’t cut that car at all. Don’t do it just for video material. It’s a cool car. But not worth a lot. And it is in pretty good condition. You’re not going full custom rebuild anyway. My suggestion (For what it’s worth) is clean it up a little. Fix the dents, get it running, and maybe lower it a couple inches. But you’re going to do what you want to do. So how about a one inch chop?

One of my favorite fabs was your Chev. sedan to pickup. So, that being said i feel there is nothing wrong with another pickup build, might not be any more problematic than six post plus under rear window chop. IMO the trunk lid would make a great looking tailgate for the old Hudson. It's quite ugly as she sits with it's big bulbous top and fenders; it's huge like a truck should be.

Yep, anyone who doesn't bag screws, bolts, etc... notating on the bags what the contents are for... and then keeping the bags and parts organized when taking a project apart... that person is just looking for a huge headache when it comes time to put things back together. When I did my frame-off rebuild of my '54 Chevy pickup in the 1980s, EVERYTHING got bagged and labeled. It made it much easier to locate the correct parts when it was going back together.

I'm one of those who don't want to see the roof chopped, but if it's gonna happen, then I join those who say leave the windshield alone, it looks like there would be enough roof height left for that? But then you'd lose the molded crease that beautifully matches the shape of the center post of the windshield. A period correct front visor would cover that, maybe help balance the look (& cover discrepancies that might occur on the top of the front posts)
