Great demo dudes! I bought a can from the discounted section in my grocery store and put it in the back pouch of my passenger seat in my car. What a false sense of security I've had. Pepper spray is the way to go.

It's a comparison between a 6 year old and an adult. A 6 year old's eye being more sensitive and vulnerable makes sense but that does it help us in self defense against an adult. Other things to consider: what was the distance you were sprayed at? Was the damage from the chemicals specifically or from the impact and irritation from the spray itself? I'm sure water shot out of a hose with the right pressure and distance to an eyeball could also cause physical damage. That doesn't make them effective strategies against an aggressor.

About a week ago my wife and I took a course on Home Defense. The instructor was a Lieutenant in a Sheriff's police force, covering a population of over 186,000 people at the last census. He had 26 1/2 years on the force, still working, and has been on the S.W.A.T Team for 22 years. When we got to the section on non-lethal weapons for protection, he talked about Tazers, OC spray (pepper spray), rubber pellets in shotgun shells, Mace, wasp spray, a baseball bat and a couple of other things. With regard specifically to wasp spray, he acknowledged that it had a good range, but that about all he had to say as a benefit. First, as shown in this video, it isn't always effective to stop someone coming after you. That is also true with pepper spray sold over the counter, and police Mace is a lot stronger. But also importantly, wasp spray contains a nerve agent (which is why it is effective to a wasp, as it absorbs the wasp spray through its body, and essentially paralyzes the wasp). He noted that police Mace is stronger than the pepper sprays you buy in a store, and that OC sprays aren't always strong enough to hold back some attackers. But the reason that I took my can of wasp spray out of our bedroom was when he told us this: At least in Illinois, you can use deadly force only if you are at risk of imminent bodily injury or death. The nature of wasp spray means it might get used a legitimate situation, you also might be inclined to use it in a situation that you were not in risk bodily injury or death. Since there is a nerve agent in wasp spray, if you got mad at someone who was just annoying, the long lasting effects or permanent effects of wasp spray might cause you to be arrested and charged with a crime, and/or,be subject to a lawsuit.

This comment alone is more important than the video this should be the first thing you ask yourself before you plan on using something as a weapon in any situation “can this get me arrested?” Pepper spray, taser, baton=No Wasp spray, Hot grease, baseball bat=Yes This is why we don’t use things that aren’t meant to be weapons as weapons unless we have no other options at the time

So the police lieutenant says wasp spray has good range but that is all for protection. Later you typed that in Illinois wasp spray could be looked at as using deadly force. That seems to be confusing.

Most bug sprays are pyrethrins which work differently than organophosphates. Even if they were that same class, the amount of consumer bug poison needed to make someone sick is several orders of magnitude more than what you mentioned. Bug spray is also mostly inert. The kind I have has poison at .035% that's 99.965% not poison.

I once reached out to squash an ant at the edge of my stainless kitchen sink and I gave him that little shock. He was killed instantly before I could touch him. I am still unsure. Commenters below have stories ranging from it hurting terribly or else not hurting at all. Some State laws may or may not classify using it as a felony. I'm sure any court of law would not prosecute you if you use it for protection in a violent PHYSICAL assault. Just spraying it in a neighbor-on-neighbor verbal fight should be charged.

It is a Federal crime, but that doesn't matter. Mostly, it will do nothing. The petroleum distillates can irritate the eyes and lungs. Compared to pepper spray, it's nothing. The poison component will do absolutely nothing. Drugs and alcohol can make a personal able to withstand crazy amounts of pain. It really doesn't matter if some wasp spray brands will hurt more, use pepper spray. The difference is like a hard smack on the rear versus 5 rounds boxing Mike Tyson.
