India was recently admitted as a member of Wassenaar Arrangement (Export Controls for Conventional Arms and Dual-Use Goods and Technologies; a multilateral export control regime). India has already joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). These groups (along with NSG and Australia Group) are part of the multinational clubs that control global trade in sensitive technologies. This opens up more avenues for India for talks for more advanced technologies with the West.
This audio article talks about synopsis (with team Drishti IAS inputs) of two articles published in the Hindu newspaper and Economic Times on Wassenaar Arrangement- why WA is in news? What is Wassenaar Arrangement and what does it aim to achieve? What are the procedures in Wassenaar Arrangement? What is the importance of India’s membership? What are the possible benefits to India (such as with Make in India programme)? Why was India admitted (how does the world benefit from it)? What were the reasons for China’s opposition to India’s membership? What are the negative aspects/criticisms of India’s membership? This topic is important for International Relations (India-World) syllabus of UPSC civil services exam.
