⭐️ About this Episode:
Off grid septic & off grid toilet options are wildly debatable as to what is the best option. What it boils down to is what best suits your needs and budget. We considered an outhouse, a composting toilet and then the traditional flushing toilet with septic system. For us and our large family and the fact that we plan to have it on Airbnb, we wanted a zero maintenance system so we went the modern route and put in a septic system.

When it comes to number 2, I think you made the number 1 best choice for your future guest needs. You could still build an outhouse (for aesthetic looks only) just to scare the number 2 out of your guest when they arrive! 😂

@@LoftisPartyofSix Wow - I'm surprised you're not required to have an inspection. Here if you want a "permanent structure" building permit then there first has to be a waste treatment inspection permit required. And so yeah even if someone wants a composting toilet then they still need septic for the gray water system. We have over ten thousands lakes though.

I completely agree with your choice of a conventional toilet for the purpose that you need. I live in my RV full time and have a composting toilet. While it’s great for two people I think any more than that the maintenance would be too much, as with emptying also comes cleaning. It’s quite the chore. Loving the cabin thus far!

the difference between a 100 and 200 dollar toilet is the amount of clogs. The more expensive toilet will have a polished or glazed trap. The other difference is they also come in seat heights coming in at 18.8"

You can get a good bidet that fits under your toilet seat, no electric required, better job at cleaning your bottom and only a few sheets of tp to dry a bit. Much less tp used so your septic lasts longer. Check them out at Amazon. Less than $100.

I think the difference between the toilets regarding price is simply quality. If the lid breaks or comes loose or the flush get stuck, that's false economy. I'd want hard-wearing durable goods in a S-T rental property. Just food for thought. Good video

So does the septic tank have to be emptied out periodically, or is there some type of grinder/aeration system?
@LoftisPartyofSix
@LoftisPartyofSix 4 жыл бұрын
If it’s over used and the solids don’t have time to break down then yes it would need to be pumped out periodically. But if it works properly then as solids turn into liquids it will work it’s way into the lateral lines into the ground.

I don't understand why more people dont make use of the waste. So heres my idea, install a system that will capture and sperate the waste IE septic and soak away system, but instead of just wasting all that viable natural gas why not capture it into either an inflatable bladder or weighted /spring tensioned capture tank of sorts. That way in time you will have an unending supply og natural methane gas, obviously the system will require some design and tuning but i think i have after about 4 years of enquiry got a solid concept.

We use solar. Love your cabin! We have springs on our property. We are pretty close to the river. It’s about half a mile from our driveway to the boat dock. Everyone said why not buy right on the water. But we were looking for a deal. We needed cheap and someone to work with us. Because we were still living in the city in the big suburban home. Right now we compost. We have been really happy with that. Not sure if we will ever have a septic tank on our property. Currently we live in a small country town in a small country house. And here we have a septic. We do plan on keeping both homes. We would prefer to be full time out by the river and we see ourselves spending much more time there. But the country house is in a little town about an hour outside a large city with hospitals and doctors. Our parents and extended family are closer to the city. We really don’t see it as being much of an expense. It’s better than having to stay at a hotel or move in with family if something happened and we need to be near the hospitals. After 2019 we decision was confirmed. Because we lost 5 family members. It was the worst year we thought. And I’m disabled. For comfort and peace of mind the country house makes sense. But we love our cabin. I think you made the right decision for you. Because you have a big family. It’s just the two of us now. And family will survive, lol. If you could have seen the look on our daughter s face when we told her to use the composting toilet. Priceless😳. Leslye

I know its been awhile since you posted this but I agree with your decision. It's one thing if it's just for you and your family. But you're not asking your children for a vote who would have to help in emptying a bucket . But you're asking your guest to empty a bucket. I feel it would turn guest away. You did the right thing. It will pay for itself in the amount if guest you have staying there. I've not had a chance to see your videos in some time due to my health , no COVID-19 here. I have neck , back and leg issues that requires me to have an implanted pain pump. Its to long to talk about and bore you. I have some catching up to do. Your cabin looks great.

Where we live in Ohio we had some of the most ridiculous County EPA guidelines in the state. It got so bad that the realtor association filed a lawsuit. The State EPA stepped in and got rid of the idiots and settled out of court. In Ohio no matter what the size of your property is the requirements are basically the same. The exceptions are for the Amish and for commercial use. A bathtub needs to be part of that system.

Yeah I’ve had lots of people asking because seems like a lot of areas around the country are super strict. Glad our area is not.

Yep, Amish here in Indiana have preferential treatment as well and it pisses me off. Using the restroom has nothing to do with God nor religion. I was told by my local building dept that I would need to pull permits and have a septic system on my hunting cabin because it exceeds 200 sq ft. But my Amish neighbors have a 4000sq ft home and don't have to have a septic system because of religion. Such bullshit. A basic system is over 20k here in Indiana and must be approved by health dept. Needless to say, I use 5 gallon bucket bathroom since it's just me

@@featheredcoyote5477 lol don't blame you Coyote, do you use your waste to water and fertilize your garden beds and plants...or just dig a hole and dump? Any issues with smell or critters, etc?

@@GenesisTreaty absolutely zero smell and zero issues with critters. Use sawdust to cover after every use until bucket gets full. Put a lid on it and set out in the sun for at least 6 months. After 6 month's, use a composting bin layered with grass clippings and straw. Doug and Stacey have great video's on KZbin explaining this method. You should check them out. They've been using this format for years in Missouri while living off grid.

You don’t explain anything about the septic lines, depth of trenching, size of line, distance from house, is there a tank, angle /level of line, how much line, etc, etc

split level composting toilet would of worked fine. they only need emptied few times a year. you deffinetely want to have a grey water diversion system so your shower and washing water does not go into a tiny 500 gallon septic tank. If that clogs while guests are there, it will only last a day or two before it backs up and makes a mess. with a grey water diversion system a 500 gallon tank can last 2x longer and works better because the bacteria work better when more concentrated. but in the end people cant' deal wtih thier own shit so a water based toilet will get you more rentals.
