I’ve flown long haul premium economy from Australia on two occasions to L.A. and London. Managed to get both trips on the bidding upgrade system for an extra $500 each way. Gotta say I would never fly long haul in basic economy again but I also wouldn’t pay full price for premium economy, I’d go business as a treat as I only do it every 10 years.

The problem with most premium economies is that the arm rests are fixed. Sometimes; on a quieter flight; you’re better in economy because if you get two to three seats to yourself you can lay down; whereas in premium economy even if you have a row to yourself you can’t move armrests and lay down.

In an ideal world that is true, but I've traveled on far too many trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights where the economy cabin is fully booked and there was no room to move. As a “mature” traveller, I have now reached the point where I find the long haul flights in economy unbearable. Last year I flew from Melbourne to London on Singapore Airlines, Premium Economy and really for me that extra legroom was worth the money. SIA also included free wifi which was a bonus, as you say adequate for sending updates to loved ones. Also NO amenities kits, I also thought that was rather cheap given how much extra you are paying. Another surprising thing was that there was no separate drinks service, I found out later drinks are now on request, also I thought “cheap” Food was ok without being much better than economy. I have booked my next flight to Cape Town from Melbourne early next year on SIA in Premium Economy, purely because I now need that extra comfort, rather than because it represents good value.

I flew the A380 at the start of the year to Auckland in Premium Economy and I would say it was definitely worth it for that 16 hour journey with the increased leg room, on shorter routes such as Singapore I think you are still better off in economy as its not too long. I used to splurge on premium upgrades like Emirates, and they definitely made retirement feel more fun. But now, six years in, inflation has made it tough to keep up the same lifestyle. I’ve even started worrying about outliving my savings, especially with sequence of returns risk weighing on my mind. I’ve noticed that every withdrawal makes it harder to recover. Hi Josh. I think from a revenue point. Airlines will add more and more Premium Economy cabins, as they can fit more seats into the space than Business. They will reduce Business Class seating. Then continue to increase the price of Premium Economy but offer a lesser service than Business. Through time, Business Class may be removed and the service in Premium improved, thus pushing the price up

I saw a study recently which showed that airlines actually make the greatest profit margin from the Premium Economy passengers--big price increase while removing only a few seats. Also, airlines are squeezing the passengers because if you want to upgrade to Business class for miles, most airlines will only let you upgrade if you booked a PE fare, because they say that a single-class upgrade is only from PE to business, or Main Cabin to PE. That being said, with enough alcohol, I can sleep in a PE seat, which I really can't in a main cabin seat. Of course, if alcohol isn't included, that becomes somewhat problematic. I won't buy PE if alcohol isn't included. My usual airline is American Airlines, and they offer free alcohol not just in PE, but also in Main Cabin Extra (which is complimentary for Executive Platinum members such as myself). I guess if I wanted to fly to one of the Gulf states, I'd probably fly Qatar Airways (which I have), rather than Emirates, but from your review, I wouldn't consider flying PE in Emirates, since it doesn't seem worth the extra cost for what they provide. Thanks for the information.

Compared to premium economy, I've found business class has a few extra ground perks, wider seats, reduced seats/bathroom ratio, free alcohol, better meal selection, lay-flat seats, and importantly.. the seats in business class have more privacy with partitions and doors. Premium economy has its place on flagship carriers like this. Would I pay $11,000 for business class on Emirates going from Miami to Dubai? NO! But I would pay $3000 to be treated like a human. And that's where premium economy comes in.

Right now Premium Economy tickets have the best ROI for airlines compared to all other cabins - the price hike relative to level of service you get is the most in their favor. Remember those "angled lie-flat seats" from business class 20 years ago? I can definitely see those making a comeback in PE if airlines can retrofit them cheaply. JAL really feels like it's gearing up to that - their new PE seat already looks exactly like that Business seat of 20 years ago.

some free advice as ive ungraded a few times now since 2021years (from London to DXB) , if you want to get a discounted emirates business class seat book economy ticket first , wait until like 3-4 days before (or sometimes they usually send you an email to say you have been selected and offer you a far cheaper ticket usually when BC isn't full ) and upgrade on the app which usually on offer for between £500-1000 each as an upgrade. Where by if you buy a business class seat directly one way could cost between £2500-3500 depending on the time of year and route. Most economy tickets are roughly between £500-700 from London. (Only thing you’ll miss out on , if it’s an upgrade to BC is lounge access and chauffeur services)

Pretty good review. Emirates is pretty much my airline of choice when I fly between Australia and Europe, as it allows me the occasional stopover in Dubai. And you're right, I'll also look for routes covered by the A380. It really was built for the passenger, while I believe the B787 was built for the airlines. My Emirates flights are consistently good - punctuality, comfort, cleanliness, crew, luggage - there's such a high level of reliability. Unfortunately I can't say that other airlines. Crew are usually pretty good. At worst, they JUST do their job efficiently and well. But your 70/30 rule isn't too far from the mark. 70% of the time, the crew member is friendly and attentive. I've just returned from a trip to Rome. On my Emirates flight from FCO to DXB I was in the very back row of economy, and even in a full flight, the crew member on my aisle took the time to welcome my by name when the meal service started. Such a simple gesture, but it means a lot, to me anyway. I would like to try Premium Economy, but when I've checked it out for my long routes, it's just been too expensive, especially when the economy seat on Emirates is still one of the best. But for a 14 hour flight between Dubai and Australia, that little bit of extra comfort would be in high demand so the airline can get away with the high prices.

Agree with your statement about EK crew. I’ve been flying Emirates for well over a decade and there has definitely been a quality shift during that time. Back in 2010, almost all crews were amazing, now I’d say 30% are there to provide great service, 70% are there to party in Dubai and don’t care about the passengers they serve. It used to be that the crew would constantly walk the cabin to ensure people were comfortable, now you tend to find them grouped in the galley discussing which club they went to during the week, if you dare interrupt you become an inconvenience and are treated as such. As a result, EK as a product has been devalued significantly during my time travelling with them (I live in Dubai, so this is frequent). I’ve flown their Premium recently and it’s ok, but not outstanding, I actually prefer (shocked to even say this) the BA PE product.

From headphones, blankets etc being taken 45 minutes before landing, demanding to take my tray while I was still eating (we received our meal last yet they wanted to collect our trays first) and twice I saw bread rolls dropped on the floor, picked up and given to a passenger. I usually fly Qatar but thought I'd try Emirates for a change, never again.

WOW! Not a good look honestly.... Maybe it was just a bad day really, they're usually better
@stephaniebuss9880Ай бұрын
@@Godsent_Gabriel999it was 4 flights in total. Two mid July and two at the beginning of August. So they must have had a bad 4 days.

I’ve flown SAS premium economy numerous times on the route from CPH to SFO. I’m a tall traveler (2 meter) and my company is cheap. For me premium is a great compromise that gets me some comfort at a price the company is willing to pay. SAS premium is pretty good in my opinion. I’ve also flown BA premium long haul on a 787 and found to great. Air Canada has a nice premium economy given a dedicated business class toilet to use.

I flew DXB to LHR and LHR to DXB in August in Premium Economy and i found it amazing i always fly emirates and I can definitely say it’s amazing the quality the food the seats and i got the welcome drinks also the alcohol was better than in economy and hot towel for me 😉 and even the Bags came out same time as Business and first class so that was a bonus definitely worth the extra spend the only down fall was no lounge access but as a frequent flyer got access to the lounge. Out of 10 a solid 8.5

I used to fly Lufthansa from. Dubai to Frankfurt and paid about $100 per flight for extra legroom. I don't know know if they called it Premium Economy, but it was worth every penny.

I have been a Skywards Gold member and have flown with Emirates regularly since relocating to Dubai in 2017. Unfortunately, you're quite right about the crew. In my experience, the most polite and proactive members tend to be from the Far East and South Asia, certainly fitting into the commendable 70% you mentioned. As a Brit, I’ve noticed that the crew from the UK and Australia often seem less engaged in their work, and many would fall into the remaining 30%. Of course, this is not a sweeping generalisation, as some are indeed hospitable and proactive, but a significant number, particularly those under 30, seem indifferent. I frequently chat with the UK-based flight attendants, and many admit they are with Emirates for only a few years, primarily to earn some money and explore the world. Regarding Premium Economy on the A380, it occasionally costs as much as flying Business Class on the B777, but even so, it’s a pleasant addition overall.

Gotta always shop around for deals, right? Biz class deals are often more competitively priced than premium economy. Would I pay double the economy fare for PE? Most likely not.
@ashliski23 күн бұрын
The thing with Emirates is, like you said, their regular economy is good, so I would rather use that and save the extra spending money for when I get to my destination. I just cant justify almost double the price for only in air perks of being on more comfortable seats and getting slightly better food.
@danptz1Ай бұрын
I think al "premium" issue is big problem for the airlines and passangers. Take turkish airlines which tp have 3 classes but now have only bussiness and economy. It is much more easier to manage and cost saver for all
@ravanne3746Ай бұрын
For the most part, when I'm paying extra for premium economy is the seat and the added space. The service upgrades (such as they are) can be nice, but I'm primarily paying for my comfort. And when you can get it for a good price, it really does make sense. Especially for long haul flights. I'll never be able to afford business class and I'll never be able to justify paying the cost of a business class seat so premium economy for me is a good balance between an elevated experience and a price that doesn't make me cringe too hard.

all depends how much you want or can spend for a ticket - I compared economy /premium and business class and you pay for what you get - Emirates products are very good

Absolutely great product! Flew it first time in March 2022 from DXB to New York JFK. Really loved it. Great food, big seat and very generous recline. Good looking cabin too. I’d fly it again any day.

I love A380 and Emirates offer best economy class product in A380. The premium economy cabin looks very chic
@thorstencremer3435Ай бұрын
The A380 is still the nicest airplane, specially in Eco. I always loved the food on EK. On EK or QR I always feel, because the crew coming from so many different countries, bringing in many different service cultures and characters, the service quality is not as smooth presented. But I love Emirates, looking forward to the A350, hope to get it to Jakarta, knstead of these old noisy B777s.

Being 5'11 1/2 or 183cm tall, I would pay extra for premium economy's extra legroom on a long-haul flight if I don't have the cash to shell out for business class. But I don't think it's enough of an upgrade over standard economy to be worth the money on a flight of less than 6-7 hours.
@PeterHarquailАй бұрын
I feel the lack of coffee service after the meal is typical among premium economy products. They always come out with a drinks service after take off, the meal comes and afterward they disappear. They will bring you whatever but you actually have to call them and ask for it, almost to make you feel bad or something. Is one consistent difference between premium and biz in my opinion.
@ravanne3746Ай бұрын
Not on Austrian Airlines. Our flight crew was very attentive and we were plied with beverages throughout the entire flight. And if on the very off chance that I wanted something when the crew wasn't available (taking a sleep break for example), I have no trouble walking back to the galley to get a drink or snack. I think in the case of Emirates, which is billed as a luxury carrier, the little cuts in service are especially noticeable and vexing..

Great video once again Josh! I haven’t flown Emirates just yet but hoping to soon! I’ve been trying to do some reviews myself and I’ve gained inspiration from both you and Noel and even go with just a GoPro (or DJI for Noel). I also agree, as far as long haul flights go or big planes, I 100% will take the A380 everytime! Love the videos as always! Much love from Australia! (U.S. Citizen originally)

Premium Economy tends to be a great choice, so absolutely no reason to be arrogant about it... The problem with it is normally neither the hard or the soft product, but it being overpriced.

Domestic flights in US I do like the Premium mostly because I’m closer to the front. When we fly long haul to Asia it’s Business class no questions asked! If they did get lie flat in PE what would they be doing for Business and First class to make them stand out?

Business class on A380 is the best with 121 configuration on 777 so far only1 has the A380 layout so far. Not tried premium economy heard seats go back so far it’s inhibiting.

Josh emirates has upgraded their 777 With new business class. Josh but in their a350’s one thing which I like is that they’re going for 2-3-2 layout and by the way I think emirates flights were the best flights ever and I took it in 2016.

Hi Josh, Great Video as always, Before I write my comment I want to put a disclaimer forward, Please note my Comment is my opinion, it doesn't have anything to do with Emirates group, I am writing on my own free will, thank you. Ok I wouldn't use the word Waste of money, Oh no no no, I view it like this, Emirates has Economy and premium Economy, there has to be a distinction between the two, people are free and know what they want and some people want a little bit more so Premium Economy is just Perfect, so really it comes down to what you want, both products are great in their own regard and in my opinion Emirates products are so so much better than some other airline products, I think it's amongst the best products in the sky today. So if it was me and I had the cash yeah, I will go for it hands down, no need to ask me twice, I'm there. I agree 100% with you regarding the A380, it's basically one of the many reasons it's my favourite Aircraft today. I'll be taking one soon can't wait, I ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ the A380 and I ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Emirates

When there's a good deal to be purchased, it doesnt' matter is it economy, premium economy, business or even first class. It's a good deal. Personally, I fly EK and *A a lot, with top tier statuses in both Emirates and United. Would I put $2K for Premium Economy seat from Dubai to San Francisco? Yes. Would I rather pay $3K if there's a business class option on the same route? Yes, in a heartbeat. It is a middle of the road product, and one thing that always makes me happy personally - is the service received onboard. For example, for as long as I remember, I bring gifts for the crew on board, 99% of the time it's chocolate. I do not expect anything in return but to show gratitude to the crew that always works hard and rarely receives praise. Keep up the good work and maybe see each other on one of the flights.

How was the legrest on the seat? Did it have any use in comfort or is it just a gimmick for someone with half legs because it just goes up against the seat of the person in front of you?

I fly every year for holidays to Japan and for me Finnair Premium Economy is worth the price. So far every flight I have taken in Premium Economy i was basically sleeping 85% of the flight. Something I never managed in Economy. The price gap on Finnair between the two classes is also not that massive, so it makes it a much easier choice. I also dislike flying, so the much smaller and quieter cabin does help with my fear of flying.

Hi Josh a good review as always but the difference between Businesss and Premium on Emirates from NZ is huge. In May I paid about NZ$5500 roundtrip AKL to LON in Premium whereas Business would have been between NZD9000 and NZ$11000. Definitely worth saving for a, I need less hassle when flying long haul these days. I have also used Air NZ and United Premium via the US to the UK and Qantas on a shorter trip to AKL SYD HKG. Air NZ by far the best, Premium Checkin at AKL, amazing food, wine and crew service, more legroom than all the others 104-106cms, great headphones. Review Air NZ Premium long haul sometimes :)

I can't speak for premium economy on Emirates but I can compare their business class on a B777 to Singapore Airlines. I read everywhere the Emirates is the best. Not so in my experience with them. I flew from STN- CEB return in business class via Dubai. The seats were in a 2-3-2 configuration with angle lie flat beds. Comparing that to a similar flight on Singapore Airlines B777 in business class. SQ wins hands down. A 1-2-1 configuration on the LHR -SIN leg. The flight from SIN to CEB a 3.5 hour flight was in a B737MAX. There are only 10 seats in business on that aircraft, all lie flat beds. The price on both the airlines was similar, however the Singapore Airlines product far outweighed Emirates.
