JK Rowling has criticised Scotland's new hate crime law online, even daring police to arrest her if they believe she's violated it.
The Harry Potter author, who lives in Edinburgh, referred to several transgender women as men, including convicted prisoners, activists, and public figures. She argued that banning accurate descriptions of biological sex threatens freedom of speech and belief.
Scotland's First Minister, Humza Yousaf, said the law aims to combat rising hatred.
The Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021 introduces a new offense of "stirring up hatred" based on various factors. Notably, it doesn't currently protect women as a group from hate, but the government plans to address this in a separate misogyny law later.
Rowling says she is worried that Scottish lawmakers prioritise the feelings of men identifying as female over the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls.
Julia Hartley-Brewer speaks with former SNP councillor, Austin Sheridan.
