i really enjoyed the sampled clock sounds; ended up with some really unique textures. i agree with the points about busywork as well. it seems like many now iconic sounds were born of tedious experimentation with no real goal other than the pursuit of something unachievable. thanks for the insights

Those who must ask a question "why?", will not understand the answer "and why not". I expected the clocks alarm sounds and spring winding to be included also - maybe it would have been too cliche, but would certainly not be identical amongst the clocks. ...Not too mention, 1am serenade of alarms would supply you with additional library of neighbourly expressions of disapproval of your experiments😜 PS.: A large carton box stuffed with a blanket makes an excellent recording dead box.

I do aim to subvert expectations, so....

Great video, very interesting .. Always enjoy your style, and philosophies Maybe you could build a small isolation cabinet to eliminate background noise..

Yeah... for small stuff a cabinet of sorts is probably going to be necessary. Would not be surprised if this ends up on my project list next year. :)

Another banger! I dig your style. Have you considered a restoration plug-in like iZotope RX to deal with background noises? Rock on!!!
@ComposerKristin17 күн бұрын
Thanks! I did use some noise reduction plugins, which was helpful, but there's only so much I can do about children screaming outside and/or dudes racing their loud cars down my street. It's definitely a struggle, although someone more experienced in removing those types noises my get better results. I'll have to get creative the next time I do more extensive recording. But... it has occurred to me I should just record random city sounds and make something fun from that.

I have so much to learn from you.

Awwww.... that's actually a really nice thing to say. If you're looking to learn how to build half-working cranked-based instruments, semi-working electronics, and/or how to confidently ignore years of advanced music theory in pursuit of weird noise-adjacent sound... I got you covered. :)

@@ComposerKristin I had an idea once for wheel/harp monstrosity that worked on channels which in/decreased tension in real time as the strings were pulled over stationary picks. I even prototyped the "tuning" mechanic with an easel, some pulleys, and various fasteners. I'm a thinker, not a doer, or it's hard to get motivated on creative projects to _do_ stuff because I really do enjoy just thinking stuff up. I am more than happy to just enjoy the content you choose to produce, but I think these concrete examples of where doing something with the things a person thinks up... it'd be cool if I figured that one out. All the same, I really appreciate the efforts.

My clock never speaks to me either but I sure have a few choice words for it every morning
