My dog has heart worms and it causes him to be very thin. I feed him and he's a little piggy but he just can't keep weight. It could be a medical reason like my dog. He's gaining weight slowly again now that he's on medicine.

This is one of the reasons why I want to adopt a few dogs when I start having kids. That is a dream of mine: to have puppers to bond with any babies I have. I plan on finding a dog trainer to teach me, my family and the dogs a few things since I want to get a German shepherd, a Pit bull and maybe a Rottweiler. A scary pack to those who don't know them but I think when people see them playing gently with babies they won't seem so scary.

THE DOG IS PROBABLY NOT ABUSED. A lot of diseases can cause dogs to become very thin, like heart worm. Even with proper feeding they wont gain weight. Even after treatment it can take up to 2 years sometimes to recover. A skinny dog does not always mean abuse, so we shouldn't be quick to judge. If she has taken the time to train him to tickle her baby, she is a caring owner, at least that is what I believe. Vice versa, If you see an obese dog being walked or at a dog park assuming that the owner is the cause is also wrong. Often times if someone has a super fat dog at the park or on a walk (excising the dog) they're either (A): A foster who has taken on the difficult task of getting the dog back in shape, or (B): someone who has recognized the issue and is trying to correct it, and then there is rarely (C): some dogs develop hard to treat thyroid issues and weight loss can become almost impossible to control. We always seem to jump to the negative nowadays, I like to believe in the benefit of the doubt.
