As grubs they are impressively large. As beetle expert Brett Ratcliffe puts it, they “are basically the size of a Polish sausage.” Hercules beetles also go through metamorphosis, like a butterfly. Except, a butterfly spins a cocoon out of silk. The beetle builds a pupal chamber out of its own feces and, in it, transforms. As an adult, male Hercules beetles can stretch up to seven inches long including their horns.

They’re awesome as pets, I had several of them but unfortunately they don’t live very long. They’re like a living badass toy and they only eat fruit as an adult

We have this beetle in Arizona. One night I was filling up at a gas station near Prescott. This particular station has extremely bright lights which attracts all kinds of creatures. One of these flew by and for a moment I thought a 747 was trying to land. Seeing a beetle this big actually flying was amazing!

Larvaes will eat as much food as possible for the metamorphosis. In other word, larvae stage is the only time beetles can grow, so after they are adult, they cannot grow in size. During pupation, larvae will break down its own body with its digestive enzymes, then recreate its body structure inside the pupae.
