How to reupholster an antique Victorian chair with David Harper (Bargain Hunt, Antiques Roadtrip , Flog it)
I’m going to introduce you to Jo & Barry Griffiths of BJ Upholstery in Darlington and show you a behind the scenes video of the chair being stripped and reupholstered.
You’ll get tips on how to do this yourself if you want to give it a go, but you’ll also see the skill required to make a perfect job of it...an expert will always make it look easy!
Please let me know if you’d like me to introduce you to other trade contacts and make behind the scenes videos...get in touch! Cheers, David Harper
Do you have any interesting antiques for me to feature here on my channel? What about interesting antiques or art you want to sell?…let me know and if I can make an informative, entertaining video on the subject, I’d love to get involved…get on touch!

I simply love antique chairs, always have done. Have you ever had anything reupholstered or done it yourself?

I like the leather trim idea, I think that will work for a project I am working on. It is easy to to Web and stitch those chairs, you use a klintch tool to attach to Web straps, and hand tie on top a bit of practice and it easy. Cutting the final fabric, that takes skill because you can't fix a mistake, you need a new piece of material. Thank your friends for the leather strip idea for me.

G'day from Australia, David. Good job. Could the 'style' of the chair, despite it being made in 1870, be described as Gothic Revival?

Hi Mick, yes it certainly has that gothic feel to it. Not high gothic, but a defo influence. Cheers, David

I'm doing 2 chairs atm. Both were painted with white gloss in the 60s and none too carefully at that - they caught the red velvet badly. As I'm chipping off the paint, and having to sand it, what should I finish the wood with? Also a bit of the hessian is worn at the front - should I just patch it? It has horse hair that was covered with a thin cotton that I will bulk up with more horse hair. Need to check the spring though as I hadn't considered them - the webbing looks fine underneath.

Sounds like a lovely job actually! If you use some furniture stain to give the fresh wood some colour and then wax it with brown beeswax, that should take the eye off the area. If you can patch the hessian, then yes, that’s exactly what would have been done on the past!

quick question, what would your opinion be if I was to do this with a similar age/looking chair however have the wood professionally painted/sprayed a charcoal, black, or even gold paint? with the zebra material contrasting. would it ruin the chair in terms of respectability and value or would I be appealing to a new type of potential client if I was to sell ie: trendy interior design, salon, bars, hotels, boutique etc. or would I be simply ruining the chair? the style will always be there just an edgy look.

Good question George. In my opinion, doing what you suggest is great upcycling and a positive thing. You’re taking something that has lost its appeal to the mainstream and creating a one off eco friendly and super value for money, stylish chair...go for it!

Hi David, would some nursing chairs have castors?
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV
@DavidHarperAntiquesTV 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Bernard, it would be normal for them to have had casters, but also normal for them to have been removed at some point
