This scene represented the turning point in Phil and Peter’s relationship. Up until this point, Phil has had the upmost power over Peter and even reveled in his ability to make him feel small and miserable. But after discovering Phil’s secret/past, Peter finally had way to get back at Phil for the torment he subjected his mother and him to. It’s Peter’s chance at revenge.
@ytviewer52692 жыл бұрын
I think the turning point actually begins a bit more back. This is definitely the tipping point, a total shift in power, but the first turn, even just slightly, in their relationship is when Peter immediately says he sees the shape of a “barking dog” when looking at the mountains, which as you know is something Phil and Bronco Henry shared together. You see his complete surprise when Peter tells him what he sees and answers correctly, asking him, “You just saw that right now?” or something to that effect. Peter says, “No, when I first arrived here.” I feel like in that moment Phil is probably thinking there is a slight chance he can rekindle that “special” relationship he once experienced, he found someone who sees things differently, like himself and Bronco Henry. Ofc Peter had other plans heh..

Is it only me that sees a pattern in the boy's behavior, as well? Phil commenting he needs to be more human. The boy reveling that his own father didn't feel he had enough heart or feelings could be insight rather than just cruelty. Yes, Peter was a medical student yet how many novels have I read that the dissection of small animals from a young age is a precursor. Letting his mother engage with the rabbit before killing it for study with no regard on how it would affect her or others. What of the other viewers that have mention concerning Peter's closeness with his mother? The disconnection from the insults thrown at him or any emotional engagement with others at all. I got a read from watching this film that this was an uneven match of a bully psycho against a methodical killer well hidden in the time period of his life. (Reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter's love for Will in the TV series.) It was the keeping of a trophy at the end, the rope Phil made, that convinced me. Peter placed it under where he slept even though it was forever prisoned. I imagine him gloving up to remove and cherish it for years to come even if he should add later trophies.

I literally WELPED out loud during this scene, it's equally as seductive as it is triumphant! Peter suddenly has all of the power and Phil becomes the bashful and vulnerable one becoming a boy himself while peter just casually exudes such strength and erotic energy just by being comfortable in his own skin while phil can barely respond to the word "Naked" Omgh.

I’m gonna get some hate for this… but I don’t see this as a love scene. I see this as a transfer of trauma: all throughout the movie, Phil Burbank has been talking up Bronco Henry as if he was the greatest man to ever live. The implication early on was that their relationship was far more intimate than Phil was willing to admit to most people (up until this scene with Peter). When Peter asks "How old were you when you met Peter" and Phil responds with "About the age you are now", that when this dynamic started to really click with me. Phil’s ill-treatment of just about everyone in his life is not just from having to mask his sexuality, but it also comes from wanting to protect the image of Bronco Henry, who from my perspective was grooming Phil until he ultimately molests him. And seeing that Peter is now in the same situation had me sincerely worried that Phil was going to continue the cycle and pass down what Bronco Henry had done to him. And while I do agree that the end result of this scene is definitely a shift in power from Phil to Peter, I don’t think it’s particularly reasonable to refer to this as an "erotic" moment. Because with the subtext of Phil and Henry’s dynamic, as well as the disturbing music and distorted camera angles used when filming Phil and Peter trading the cigarette, it feels like the scene is going out of its way to be as uncomfortable and even frightening as humanly possible. And from my personal experience, it succeeded.

We just watched this movie in my Contemporary Film class, and almost all of my classmates hated it! Haha I guess this is the kind of movie that really asks a lot of its viewer, so I understand if people are unwilling to commit. But I was just so swept up in every aspect of this masterful filmmaking. The way the drama slowly unfurls with almost infuriating leisure only makes the sudden shift in energy that much more impactful! And I mean, I don't even need to say anything about the performances and cinematography. Truly such a masterpiece.

Jane Campion is amazing. Peter is most intuitive, having figured out Phil's relationship with Bronco Henry early on, but never mocks Phil, who does the opposite during their first Inn-pub dinner scene together. Regarding the scene referenced here in the videoclip, Peter caresses Bronco Henry's saddle, then shares a smoke with Phil which is über-homoerotic, sans any nudity. When George and Rose began to dance atop the hill, I cried when George said: "I just wanted to say, how nice it is, not to be alone." The final scene wherein Peter, having understood the danger(s) of handling raw hide (Anthrax), has donned gloves to caress the rope that Phil made him, then tucks it away beneath his bed, is simply masterful. Jesse Plemons' portrayal as George is so magnificently understated. It's a difficult nomination year for Best Supporting Actor, what with Ciarán (Kieran) Hinds' performance in "Belfast"; Troy Kotsur's performance in "CODA"; and Kodi Smit-McPhee's performance in "The Power of the Dog" (as "Peter"), but I am rooting for Jesse Plemons -- sorry Kodi (I wonder if Kodi's waist is an American size 15? Jesus!). The film score by Jonny Greenwood is very reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann. Sadly, my Best Film choice for 2022 is still "Don't Look Up" and how unkind not to nominate Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance therein.
